i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies it''s sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and i'm not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home i'm talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because it's literally not even that difficult and it matters so much
i truly believe that knowing how to cook is a basic survival concept and the fact that so many people can't even make simple dishes is depressing as hell this is the sorta thing that should be taught at a young age. being able to take the ingredients you have around your home and turn them into a meal is like, essential and will make life so much better. you don't need to be a high end chef you just need to understand some things that can be easily taught... but then again maybe the education system is playing a roll against this and ultimately they want you to grow up to rely on mcdonalds for dinner. i don't know. please learn how to cook for yourself if you're able. i'm not asking you to hunt for specific ingredients to make some expensive youtuber's "best" recipe but if you know the basics of cooking you can do a lot with cheap canned ingredients. cooking can be affordable i promise you just need to learn how to make do with what you can get
Can anyone point me towards resources that teach those basics cus I would LOVE to teach my child this stuff but i dont know how to cook
not comprehensive but heres some:
internet shaquille's basics but especially:
making rice
making scrambled eggs
making oatmeal
levels of cooking meat
using & storing vegetables with recipes in the description (this one has a bit of Sassiness directed at people who dont like vegetables but the content is solid)
food safety + a recipe to demonstrate
how to learn to cook (just a list of subtopics, no actual tips)
cooking techniques playlist
how to cut x
basics with babish s1 & 2, but particularly:
freezer meals,
weeknight meals,
kitchen tools (although the specific suggestions are pretty expensive even with the lower end scale items the basic categories are solid, and you can evaluate what items you will realistcially need - eg. if you dont need to read temp for steaks etc the temp reader will not be relevant) &
kitchen care (mid-high advanced home cooking)
basic knife skills
picking the right pan for each recipe
j. kenji lopez-alt's tips and tricks playlist
egg recipes
a little more complicated, involved, and longer than any of the rest of these but good breakdown of flavor & how and why to use the basic seasoning/flavor profiles
and then recipe channels representing various cuisines:
j. kenji lopez-alt (various)
marion's kitchen (southeast & east asian, western/asian fusion)
maangchi (korean)
future neighbor (mostly korean)
the western supermarket playlist of chinese cooking demystified (more recipes available but these are accessible if you dont have "specialty" ingredients)
family recipes playlist by made with lau (chinese)
not another cooking show (various)
cooking with boris (bear with me here i know he does it exaggeratedly humorously but a lot of them are actually solid and beginner cook friendly. mostly slavic/russian)
you suck at cooking (also falls into the intentionally humorous category but most of the recipes are pretty solid anyway)
how to cook that (baking, also does debunking videos of viral cooking hacks - breaks down the reasons the hacks dont work, pretty important to understand those basics imo)
internet shaquille (various)
babish culinary universe (various)
i REFUSE to recommended joshua weissman because he is fucking insufferable but if you want you can try if you can deal with it, the techniques/recipes seem fine for the most part
also disclaimer: these are channels i watch and cuisines i most often cook with (save for YSAC and boris which i just find funny) - there are tons of cuisines that are missing completely but i don’t cook with them much so i don’t really know who to rec
again definitely not a comprehensive list but it touches on most of the basics

[Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small]
I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence
Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.
Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.
u r absolutely right I have SO many complaints about Windows omg.
For anyone who'd like to follow along, I'm gonna share how to get around those things with group policies bc they're more user friendly and descriptive than registry editor imo :3 I'll also show how to get around needing a Microsoft account to get setup.
For the Device Setup
"OOBE" stands for Out Of Box Experience which is what that setup workflow is. But it also happens to be a folder with a little program in it that'll let you skip connecting to the internet; this makes it so you don't have to sign up with a Microsoft account and can just use a normal local one instead. And it already comes preinstalled! Here's how you get to it:
Hold Shift + F10, or Shift + Fn + F10 depending on your keyboard.
Click inside the window that pops up, type the following and press enter afterwards to run it: OOBE\BypassNRO
I believe it should restart your computer automatically, but if not then restart your computer or type: shutdown /r /t 0 /f
Now when you're brought back to the setup workflow, the page where you connect to the internet will have a new button on it that lets you say you don't have internet. Clicking that and proceeding through the rest of the setup lets you get around the Microsoft account thing.
Group Policies
You don't have to know much about them, these are just a bunch of specific settings for what your computer can or can't do that lets you decide how it works in different ways.
I'm gonna show you how to turn off the recommendations and internet stuff basically. For now bring up search and type gpedit, pick this
It'll open up to Local Group Policy Editor and we can get started :3c
Start Recommendations
In the side menu, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on Settings to sort them with all the "Turn off" ones bumped to the top.
Here's what you should set:
Turn off user tracking: enabled
Turn off feature advertisement balloon notifications: enabled
Remove Recommended section from Start Menu: enabled
Remove Personalized Website Recommendations from the Recommended section in the Start Menu: enabled
Do not search Internet: enabled
Windows Spotlight
Back in the side menu, go down to Windows Components > Cloud Content
Turn off all Windows spotlight features: enabled
Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences: enabled
Cortana
In the side menu, this one's back at the top under Computer Configuration. You're gonna want to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search
Allow Cortana: disabled
Don't search the web or display web results in Search: enabled
News and Interests
In the side menu go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests.
Enable news and interests on the taskbar: disabled
Microsoft Account Login Nudges
When you don't use a Microsoft account they'll nudge you repeatedly to sign in so you can "get the most out of your experience" *gag*. The group policy for turning that off has a note that suggests it might not work with Windows 11 though (implicitly), so you can close the group policy editor window now and for this last one let's just open up the regular settings.
Go to System > Notifications > Additional settings, then uncheck all the boxes. And there ya go! (✿◠‿◠)ノ u are done.
Group policies are kind of a rabbit hole so while there is a lot more you could change or read into, for your own sanity's sake I would advise against it and say call it a day lol
This is all extremely good information, thank you very much for the addition!
/cracks fingers
Hokay, so. You wanna get serious about this? Buckle up, because all of the above is nice, but it’s minor stuff and hey, guess what? Will probably be re-enabled by Windows at some point after an update.
First things first. Make a backup. Or at least a system restore point. I’m not getting into the differences between those. Either way, Google how to do that, its super simple.
Now then, we are going to be looking at a few utilities that do everything above except more, and automatedly. Some things to keep in mind:
Yes, you need to work with Powershell and Github. No, this doesn’t make you a hacker. No, it’s not that difficult. Welcome to the Cyberpunk hell of the future, everyone needs to know how to use a command line.
You will need to re-run these. There’s no escaping the creep of Big Data’s cancerous bloat.
All of the following is provided without support. Do your own research, understand the risks and make a fucking backup.
Windows 10 Debloater
Windows 11 is basically windows 10 with a bunch of window dressing and modernization, so this tried-and true tool still works. It is a fairly comprehensive script with some QOL improvements like a GUI if you’re terrified of a command line.
Find it here: https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater
But Amid, I hear you say, this is for Windows 10! Yes, and it will miss some things from Win11. Not enough to stop you from using this very simple, no-decision script that you run once and then again after major updates just in case.
Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility
Now we get into the juicy stuff. Chris’s winutil is a much more comprehensive tool that you’re basically going to need to play around with to figure out what’s best for you. Its wholly GUI based, which makes it easier to navigate for most people, but I expect most Tumblr users will face information paralysis. Suck it up, go slow and you’ll be fine. There’s a guide available on his website, but its kind of out of date and is missing a bunch of Windows 11 information.
Yes, this utility works on, is developed for and has been tested on Windows 11. Even if it barely mentions that fact. Programmers, I swear to fuck. Find it here:
https://christitus.com/windows-tool/
Windows 11 Ghost Spectre
Annnnd here we are at the endpoint. A completely stripped-down, feature-free version of Windows 11. This is the most work and may turn a lot of people off - it requires completely reinstalling windows. You need to be comfortable formating drives, installing ISOs to USBs, understanding how to get your windows license (or getting a new one). You also need to be comfortable with the fact that this solution does not come with Windows Defender. Yes, people give Windows Defender a lot of shit. They are mostly ignorant - Windows Defender is the basis for every anti-malware and virus scanner. You will also never get an automated update - that’s how stripped down this OS is. If you want security updates, you need to find the ghost toolbox and figure it out yourself.
Ultimately, this is the work of a single Japanese enthusiast/hacker. It is not easy to find - you need to go to their youtube and follow links from there. I think a lot of the shell game they play is pointless in the modern era, but I’m going to respect the process. Download the ISO, dump it on your USB, choose your installation type and be sure to grab the ghost toolbox.
It’s work. It can be a lot of work for a lot of people.
But you’re not going to get a more private, stripped down version of Windows 11.
Install Linux
Look man, I’m a syseng. I’m still getting used to the idea that telling people to install Linux is somehow socially acceptable. Do that thing if you want, its not as hard as some people make it out to be but its not easy either, and good luck troubleshooting stuff when it goes wrong.
Linux for gaming is rapidly becoming the future (minus online games that require kernel anticheat) but outside of some very finely kept gardens (SteamDeck et al), welcome to the hell of trying to figure out why your audio device isn’t working, why your drivers shit the bed, or where the fuck even are the logs from Proton this time.
if a characters name is just a word related to their powers or job then they are transgender. because obviously their parents wouldnt know that information the second theyre born so how would they have those names. its because they named themselves
i have been waiting for this to show up in my dash forever
ITS BACK

As @staff further refine the polls while they're rolling them out (still haven't gotten mine sadly), here's a suggestion of mine: Polls with a ten year time limit.
As of right now, it's impossible for polls to turn into long-running legendary posts. You can try, sure (see the bug race), but it's a week and then it's locked, fixed, done, and all that's left is for people to reminisce about that time there was a poll.
On the other hand, if a ten year poll gets popular, it can become part of Tumblr lore while still being updated. People can write passionate appeals for their vote and fight in the notes. Others can make graphs to show how the poll's majorities shift with each different US president or Taylor Swift album. People can make memes about "remember 2025, when option 3 was in the lead? That was a crazy time".
Why ten years, though, instead of a hundred or just no time limit? Because that way, the end becomes an event. People who voted in the poll when it was just a few hours old can watch the final countdown together, and there's a new point in Tumblr history: That day when we finally all agreed on the best option, and presumably also some important political stuff happened.
Now, granted, most ten year polls would never reach this level of notoriety. But it only takes a few polls like this to be worthwhile. Maybe this shouldn't be an option for users to select, but something the Tumblr website grants/pushes on you at random?
So, yeah. Ten year polls. They should be a thing.
Can you imagine the chaos of a 10 year poll with the options
