Do wish there were better russian rep but that is definitely a dream when it comes to western media. I remember when Borat became popular (getting popular again) I had to hear stupid bs since childhood and now I have to endure that shit again when I thought people had finally seen how racist it was (they didn't sorry for hoping people could critically think).

Oomf may i ask you to elaborate? I never watched Borat (never will!) and I've only seen clips of it demonstrating it's racism- mainly in reference to how it made westerners people think of Kazakhstan. But I never even considered, how is it russophobic?

In general I can say the actor who played Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen, is a horribly racist zionist who worked in other racist projects such as the anti arab movie "the dictator". I'm not doubting he'd jump at the opportunity to shit on any non white non jewish people.

I don't believe the movie is outright rep for Russians entirely, but I do think its pretty close in how Yankees view russians and a majority of Central Asia that had been part of the USSR. There is nothing within the movie that shows Kazkakh culture or language. All that is explicitly implied is that he is from Kazakhstan. Borat's "homeland" in the movie wasn't even recorded in Kazakhstan either, instead was recorded in a Romani village.

Borats use of slavic words and writing in cyrillic form, and how Sacha Cohen even admitted that the movie was inspired by a Russian doctor he had met. It has been an insult to Kazkakhs and Romani people, but I personally think Russians have also been insulted in and by the movie though it isn't outright noticeable, I'd say deliberately. The movie is an attempt to dehumanize and demean pretty much any Russian-speaking country or had been apart of the USSR. I don't think Cohen would've been that influenced in using Kazakhstan as his place of choice if it weren't for the hatred for the USSR as a whole and the misinformation and propaganda by the imperialists regarding it. Especially when his first place of choice was originally Moldova before he settled on Kazakhstan. I don't think he'd have any interest in the small country that he barely represented in the movie to begin with. (cont)

I just know that from my experience when I had mentioned I was Russian or that my family had been from Kazakhstan, I would get Borat quoted at me regardless which answer I gave them. Because to the average yankee, their only knowledge of Kazakhstan is conflated with "Russian", and I believe the movie had been a big influence for that type of thinking.

This is just my opinion from my experiences ever since the first movie came out, so I understand not many would agree with my take on this movie and might be seen as a bit of an overreach. Either way the movie is definitely racist, antisemitic and Islamophobic, that much is clear throughout the movie.

saw someone make a short about "a surprisingly trans friendly joke in a dolly parton movie"

its from the movie straight talk, in the end credits where someone is calling into dolly's character shirley's radio show asking for advice. she says she feels like a woman on the inside and wants to be one on the outside. and shirley responds with advice on how to do her hair and what shoes to wear, etc.

and like, its sweet, its cute. but the entire "joke" is that you think that a very southern woman is going to be transphobic, but then she isn't. she's actually really nice.

the whole reason its a "joke" is because everyone in society expects people similar to shirley in the movie to have not as progressive views. cis people are waiting for the "haha you have a penis you stupid moid" shit, and trans women are waiting for the part where its confirmed that no one involved in the production of this movie sees them as human.

maybe it's not intentional. maybe its not even a joke. its just a little bit of closing character depth as the credits role. but to me, when this is called a "joke", it feels like someone winding up a punch only to lightly pat you on the head as a "joke". and you're the asshole because you flinched

also the guy making the short about this scene from the movie said "trans person" ("transperson" (sic) in the subtitles) and referred to the caller as "them" as well as anyone watching the movie as "a trans person" or "they".

absolute refusal to acknowledge that a scene about a trans woman even has a woman in it or trans women watching it.
