She canât breathe. It feels like sheâs slowly suffocating right here in front of him. The thought that MAYBE sheâs wrong about this whole thing surfaces in her mind. Maybe she made it all up. Maybe she created this thing, molded him into who SHE WANTED him to be. And maybe, maybe thatâs just not him at all. But she doesnât want to give up on him. She canât give up on this. Without taking a sip, she sets her glass down.  â It doesnât have to be, â  She nearly sobs, stepping closer to him, DARING to reach up and touch him. Her hands frame his face, fingers brushing through the scruff covering his jaw. There isnât a single thing she wouldnât give to just be with him. To have him want her the way she wants him. To feel what his arms are like wrapped around her, to feel him kiss her. Her thumb brushes over his cheek, scruff prickling against her finger.
â You could be happy. â  Her weight shifts,  â I could make you happy. Just give me a chance, give us a chance. Please, â  Tears prickle in her eyes, slowly slipping over her her cheeks.  â I know youâre scared. I know you â you think youâre all sorts of FUCKED up and that no one should want you like this. But I do. Okay? I want you. So, SO badly. â  Her voice cracks, fingers holding on a bit tighter to his face. Thereâs a terrible feeling in her gut, like if she lets go, sheâll lose him. Heâll spiral, sheâll break and this whole thing will have just been a MISTAKE.  â Steve IâmâŚIâm falling in love with you. â  Her tongue feels heavy. Dry. As soon as the words are out, she knows theyâll probably backfire. Caroline swallows, slowly ( begrudgingly ) letting her hands fall from his face.  â So we need to get out of the grey area. WeâllâŚsolve the case. â  Her stomach twists as she looks back towards the coffee table. Files. Files she knows holds the information that she doesnât want to know. The details sheâs been too scared to ask about.
He wants to hurl something at the wall, the glass or a bottle -- he doesnât know for sure.   She seems to be determined to go through with that, she seems determined to make his life a living hell apparently. He canât keep watching so intensely the bottle, he canât keep staring at her face because he feels something bubbling inside him && he canât say if itâs good or bad. So he chooses to stand and go by the windows, It seems that the weather matches their mood -- itâs dark and unforgiving. His clenched fists bury themselves in the pockets of his pants as her fingers reach for his face. His eyes close automatically, her hands cool on his face. He wants to reach for her, wants to close his hands around her waist, to kiss her, to devour her. He wants all of her, he wants to love every inch of her body, he wants, he wants, HE WANTS. And then her words hit him like a truck. Sheâs asking him for a chance, she wants him, she says she does and fuck if she didnât just say sheâs in love with him.
It seems to shut his brain down, her words. And then, her hands disappear from his face and he canât lose that. He just canât. His hands grab her hips, pushing her against the wall softly, his forehead pushing against hers. Heâs not sure heâs breathing anymore, he wants her so damn much. Her scent assaults him, his blue eyes staring at her mouth, at the perfect freckles on the flesh of her face. His nose rubs against hers, his fingers a second away from the flesh that appears between her pants and her shirt. Heâs driving himself insane as his nose grazes the flesh of her cheek. He has to stop, he has to or heâll throw everything heâs fighting for by the window. He finally rests his forehead against the wall, his nose pressed against the column of her throat.   âI want you. You have no idea how much,â   his voice is rough, soft as he speaks and tries to contain everything he feels,    âbut we canât. Not right now, you have to, you have to trust me a bit.â   His eyes close, he chooses to enjoy being so close to her because heâll never have the guts again. His stomach twists as she speaks, a sigh of relief the only reply he can make. He wonders if he should go, put some distance between them. But then, she would tell him if he was bothering her.
