it seems like everything they call growing up has to jerk your guts out and just about wreck you and i’ve never been able to understand why that’s supposed to be good for you.

it just sounded dumb to me.

which made what happened a lot harder to live with, i can tell you.

sometimes it would be nice if life just kept happening the way it’s happening, if things got to a good place and just stayed there, didn’t change.

they have to try or it was all for nothing, and nobody likes to do something all for nothing.

this place gives me the creeps.

it’s dumber than falling in love and freezing your ears until the lobes almost fall off.

i think it’s sad. that’s what i think.

Safe? Maybe. Then, soon enough, the Pinkertons would find them again, and try to murder everyone for staying loyal to a crazy man. Try to murder even little Jack, who had nothing to do with that shitshow. Arthur gritted his teeth at the mention of Dutch, knowing deep inside that he had been following a manipulator all those years. All those years and Dutch kept telling him he couldn't think, only fight -- Arthur was a dumb gunslinger, there was no way he would question his leader. Perhaps he did restrain himself from thinking, believing loyalty was more important than trying to understand the situation.

"All them years... I couldn't notice how dumb I was." His voice was hoarse, deep, full of regret. Dutch had taught him not to chase vengeance. Not to kill innocent folk. Yet, Dutch killed a woman in Blackwater, and Arthur wasn't even there to witness such thing. Dutch murdered the Braithwaites for 'living', fed Angelo Bronte to the alligators to 'protect' his gang... Arthur knew those were just excuse for vengeance, yet he kept those thoughts away, afraid of betraying the code.

Now? Dutch didn't even want to save John from prison. What happened to damn loyalty? They were going to hang John soon, and Dutch didn't seem to care. "He has been crazy before Guarma..." His words felt like sharp knives inside his throat, immediately he felt dirty, a traitor for saying them. "That girl he killed in Blackwater, he never told me the whole truth about it, he's not goin' to."

Then, he coughed hard, resting a hand on a wet trunk to hold himself. Since Guarma, those coughs were getting worse. Arthur feared he was sick, but there was no rest for the wicked.

"Just happened to sink down with the boat, that's all. Ended up on a beach, and lucky me, I found Dutch and the boys around. My lungs are probably a mess for the amount of salty water I swallowed." Another cough, then he felt some dizziness coming to his senses. It was getting worse, though Arthur had to ignore it.

"I'll be fine. We just... need to focus on keepin' folk safe. We did a lot of noise, Charles... for nothin'. Hosea and Lenny died for nothin'."

A pause, silence deafening all but the coughs hymn to whirling absolute to the void just out of reach accompanied by insects -- absent of all warmth besides the lanterns bitter flame seemingly minor to the sheer magnitude given on the word nothing. flickering, casting shadows on the other man's pale skin almost making it a sickly yellow -- a hollowness that while new wasn't exactly how Charles had remember it. sunken as if simply to mask the skull that jutted out along the jawline and points of the face ever waning into one sour expression. Silence, the only response made that kept anger at bay grinding teeth against one side of his mouth set into a frown.

"I buried them together y'know.... It's what they would've wanted.", he manages the words recollecting the laborious time spent eluding law enforcement to collect their lifeless bodies. Lenny, a particularly hard sight curled on the ground child like to the contrast of a young upstart endless in the energy his namesake beheld, summer never ending. Kinship that Charles shared to the younger as if an older brother watching out for a kid sibling now reduced to memories ever fleeting a new reality in which dulled in comparison to 'nothing', simply a descriptor that left a hole. A forbidden piece of language that didn't fit. Like him, misplaced out of reach and detached. They weren't 'nothing' to him.

Dark hues study Arthur, scrutiny of eyes narrowing that pervaded these silent moments adrift in a sea of uncertainty with reprieve that in this one still present retained morality enough to recognize the truth manifest. However, to what end? It was no secret that Arthur had his moments of selfishness, bouts of violence that to a point that even rubbed Charles the wrong way. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before that self-interest would aid only in the downfall of what remained of the Van Der Linde gang.

No time to mourn what hasn't happened.

"These folk don't need to be kept. Tilly, Mary-Beth, Abigail, Jack, need to be set free. They deserve that much.", hes seething knowing what's in store, a cycle repeating until they all are dead or by Arthur's' own admission willfully blind to the facts staring at them, lambs to the slaughter. To whatever Dutch deemed them necessary in the moment. Though not all could be cowed so easily.

"What will you do?" indignation flared at nostrils, similarly powerless in his own position amongst the gang. Not truly someone's first choice, though he'd always kept a fine barrier when it came to socializing with the other members, excluding Lenny. In a way, he'd come to care for them from afar whether or not his presence was truly warranted. Still, grateful to have experienced some semblance of normalcy ever meek.

Rain drums on a covered awning, washing away day into night clouded in mists - perfect, in a way, to hide in plain sight. Saint Denis's streets once a crowded space to which thronged life dispersed equally in men and women alike now stood desolate as a grave. Gaslights still twinkling fires in lampposts encased atop in glass fixtures evident to what living things still dwelled in its glow. Stragglers, some poor, others simply caught outside curfew to the sheer lock down of the entire city.

Heavy were the foot falls already having trekked the distance from the docks now inland. Hurried in some regards to the deputies occasionally closer than necessary, weaving from block to block in an effort to catch those who had seemingly slipped from sight. Charles hid amongst the unwanted, easy when his skin color had already mildly been seen as unacceptable -- having shirked the finery of a double breasted vest, necktie, and jacket. The stains that had dotted the cloth remnant of the blood that still congealed on the corpses of Hosea and Lenny now buried on the outskirts. A french dress shirt unbuttoned at the neck, sleeves rolled up to the elbows visible despite the mud caked to segments of white now partially hidden, cloaked in a dark cape that flowed down to his ankles.

All this effort to go back, an invisible hand that beckons, churning the sensation in a gut knowing there was still something or rather someone concealed behind stone parapets dire for help. In this, Charles recounts the gangs steps up until the point of the failed bank robbery. Mental sweeps guided by landmarks in an effort to look for what remained of the team to no avail. Soft almost unheard crying drowned out nearly to the white noise of the downpour all around heard in trained ears used to hunting.

Pausing, stepping, then pausing again straining on auditory cues to sound once again makes this pursuit of delicate notes last a lifetime of anticipation in the confines of an alley, in which, cut short with the flick of silver darting out grasped in a hand then sent immobile by his own mitt catching the wrist like instinct -- shaking it until casting away the dagger meant to pierce a broad chest. The struggle that ensues is short lived as each, caught in each others grasps respectively recognize the familiarity near friend shaped.

Dark strands of hair matt and stick to the straw of her hat and outline the sides of her face. Her natural blues like a well that spills over at first in the need to survive but also melt into realization of who holds her in place -- weariness etching into the fine lines of lips downturn. It's then that she collapses into him, sobbing clinging to near hysteria which he is a mere specter to and unsure of how to console besides simply remaining steadfast.

we didn't save anyone, did we?

"C'mon it's not safe here. We'll just have to see who made it back to camp.", He brushes a hand across the back of her shoulders, glancing periodically at their surroundings, ever in watch to the possible threat looming just past the shadow of a brick wall.

Leaves cast shadows, a myriad of their forms dancing in patterned colidescope black on the bare skin of mocha. A patchwork of that shifted with the change of the wind and cooled to a degree the humidity that drenched his body in a layer of sweat. This in combination with the slow gait of Tamia had maintained some temperate tolerance that only extended skin deep. Irritation baited itself in the uneven breathing, the effort it took not to just return to camp an even stronger desire he'd sooner succumb to. The swamps surrounding the grounds of Shady belle met the dirt road plainly, whole segments dedicated to entrapping hooves should one wrong step place itself too weighted on a bottomless mound of sludge ever sinking in the moment panicked struggle of legs stuck on retraction. A cycle of wrenching out each of his horses feet had only aided the idea of forfeiting the trail, not to mention the alligators that watched from their banks ever waiting the moment he enters the waters edge.

Dumb girl, he thinks envisioning what state he'd find her in, finally dismounting and tethering Tamia to the closest dry spot accompanied by a trunk thick enough to hold back the start of her bucking - huffs as powerful as the limbs seemingly still kicking the imaginary mud that encased her back hooves moment prior. Calming hushes and soothing fingers rake the length of her neck in rhythmic brushes until she stills as quietly as he. Charles would continue the pursuit of foot falls still outlined in the sloshing sediment, tracking each keenly to its end.

A clearing in the wake of moss and shrubbery gave sunlight a chance to outline the darkened frock of a dress. Whatever Dutch had in store for her ransom couldn't have been any more gruesome than being a meal to cold blooded reptiles. Regardless it wasn't his business besides her safe return or so he had been instructed as much by the man in question. Easy to capture prey when it had already fatigued itself on escape. Evident on the lines underneath her eyes, disheveled hair framing a face dry to dehydration.

you're not here 'cause you're worried about me.

"You're right. I'm not.", Arms are quick with the lasso, looping and cinching limbs to her waist line before reeling, dragging her form to his bulk. Hogtying tightly until he was sure only the wiggling was simply her flare of indignation and need to struggle against the inevitable. If only Arthur had been saddled with this matter, perhaps things would have been treated delicately than the slinging of her form over a shoulder no different than a sack of potatoes.

Rest and succor amend themselves in the reflection of dappled peaks of sun dotting on white caps of tiny waves meeting the lip of sand across the waters edge of Clement's Point. Its tiny bubbles soothing, lapping drops caress the bottoms of bare feet soaking in the rhythmic passes of each fluid motion. Flecks, like shining stones were scales shucked from the length of fresh catches of fish. Glinting, catching light similarly as a Bowie knife applies pressure sideways in clean sweeps. He allows himself this simple pleasure at arms reach of the tide and sounds of camp -- each equally separating him from being too close to another, coolness seeping into and refreshing a soul at peace amongst nature. Surely nothing could reach a more tranquility posed in the silence next to the hushed tones of those who kept him just on the brink of friendship. A healthy balance.

Interrupted strides that shift the sand beneath, long and dragging that create a noise similar to sandpaper on wood. Charles knows who walks behind him in his place facing the water, never to turn and acknowledge a form troubled with looming ever so suspicious behind. It's like he can hear the gears turning thinking of an insult to provoke and start a war hes too stupid to finish.

you think you're good and I'm bad?

"No.", the word was stated matter of fact, knowing that any more would have only entreated more acts of hatred from Bill, whatever the cause of offense, it wouldn't come from Charles. No matter what it seemed like, the other man's deposition always drove to feel a superiority miss placed. Charles would simply continue harvesting fish.

Crickets thrum, a chorus of chirping and buzzing that spans distances near and far - patches of them that seem to combine into one song to match the echo resounding in Spanish moss and foliage alike. Light of the moon's waning crescent blocked partially by the apex of a canopy thick with fungus and leaves that only the horizon line of a water's surface is the only vessel to refract what illuminates from its place in the sky.

The dark covers the two traveling cradled in its keep amidst the dense humidity of swamp, in which, Charles is palming the moisture on the nape of his neck while the other mitt is swatting away mosquitoes and moths attracted to the only lantern held up by Morgan in the pursuit of a path in their wake.

In truth, it had been Charles insistence that they break away from camp for time to forage, to hunt in the depths of the night provided the respite could merit more than just provisions for the gang but answers to the questions surrounding Dutch, Micah, Javier, and Arthur's disappearance once he had separated from them in Saint Denis. All seemingly in their own way changed, disturbed in a feeling that Charles couldn't place - something he could only trust in Arthur to elaborate.

Equally unable to forget nor block out the events that seemed to haunt the moments that led up to their escape in slowed time, Hosea -- then Lenny now buried in shallow graves not far from the city's edge. No time to mourn or weep at headstones now like silent onlookers meant to warn any that should meet a similar fate.

"I'm glad you and Dutch are safe.", the words more to test what hollowness found itself etched in discolored bags underneath the other man's eyes. Their natural blue dull and listless, now paralleled the utter void that surrounds them.

Some people just can't be saved.

"Maybe... Or maybe Dutch was always good at hiding the bad deep down.", a half sigh exhaled through nostrils in remembered frustration at yet another "plan" acting in response to the displacement that co-mingles in everyone's mind. If only their leader could stop to whatever madness that drove him to disillusioned practices.

"What really happened in Gurama, Arthur? You look like shit."
