Myths & Truths about Government Grants
Productivity Apps I Use
Iām a big fan of dedicated apps. There are many apps that make their way to the web, but the browser is busy enough already I find. And srsly, who enjoys thumbing through all those tabs. I know I donāt.
[EDIT]: So one of my readers requested that I mention what platforms these apps are on (i.e., desktop, iOS, Android. etc.). These are all apps on OSX. There may be mobile and linux options (any maybe even windows... shudder...), but Iām too lazy to list those out here.
These items are in no particular order.
# FOCUS: Pomodoro Timer
# CALENDAR: Sunrise
# THOUGHT DUMPING GROUND: Evernote
# TO-DO LIST: AnyDo
# COLLAB: Slack dedicated app
# EMAIL: Airmail
# DO THIS: Chrome pinning tabs
# IMAGE EDITING: Pixelmator
# MUSIC: Radiant Player (google play music dedicated app)
Want more of a description? Let me know, and Iāll add context. Which apps do you use and why?
What this blog is for.
This blog is for you.
As much as Iād like to spend all my time with friends catching up over coffee, beer, wine, food, or a hike, I am making choices that do not allow a lot of time for these precious moments. Maybe these choices are mistakes, and I apologize if my unavailability has caused any distress in your life. I am simply doing what I believe to be best for my interests (Iāll discuss those later). Ā So, Iāve made this to connect with you: my family, friends, and soon to be friends. I want to share my stories with you: my past, present, ideas, and things I care about.Ā If you find any of this content interesting, please say so in some form. Like it, share it, and you are awesome if you leave a question. You are even more awesome if you call any bullshit that you see. Your feedback is what drives the content that will be here.
Hopefully I will meet you over food or drink soon, but if not, please enjoy my blog.
Openly,
Noel
Meet my wife and I! Nadine and I (her husband) made this video as a team about three years ago. Neither of us had experience doing anything like this before, but we managed to storyboard, film, record the audio, edit, and publish it in one weekend. Pretty proud of it.Ā
Itās cute.
Improving myself: from standing on building ledges to meeting my hero (pt. 1)
For the last two years, I was suffering through depression, anxiety, heart disorders. Two months ago, I began making small diligent adjustments everyday to improve my mental and physical health. Now, they are better than they have ever been in my life.
There is hope.
A positive side effect from these small adjustments has resulted in me meeting my hero, winning $5000 through the BC job grant, and making new friends and connections faster than I thought was possible. Meeting industry giants like Greg Caws, Dean Barnes, and Brian Scudamore (thereās more than I can list) and them actually taking an interest in me and asking me questions is hard to comprehend considering I was standing on building ledges just months before.
This blog is about what Iāve done to take what was broken, mend it with lacquer and gold, and make it more beautiful than it was before. Please ask questions. Please share. Upcoming topics include:
Where I was Where I am now Beautiful tools that I use everyday What is my mission now?
If youād like to ask me anything specific, please do and I will make a point of writing about it next.
Hello family and friends ā I hope you are all doing well. I have just completed the first week of my web development course and wanted to take some time to update you on what has transpired. After my email signature, I have created a short summary of my itinerary should it interest you.
Before I...
Ć¢ĀĀWhat do you call a photo of a selfie? An elfie?Ć¢ĀĀ You know those days when you get a picture with your hero? A real life astronaut? Yeah... wait... what?
Meeting Chris Hadfield and CodeCore Week 1
Hello family and friends ā I hope you are all doing well. I have just completed the first week of my web development course and wanted to take some time to update you on what has transpired. After my email signature, I have created a short summary of my itinerary should it interest you.
Before I get started, I just want to express how grateful I am to have you bunch as my family and friends. As most of you know, the past two years have been very difficult for me. Now things are better, and they donāt show any signs of stopping.
Here are some highlights from my week:
I have many new close friends and more aquaintances than I can count
My body and mind feel healthier than they ever have in my life
My relationship with Nadine grows stronger and deeper despite my schedule
I enjoy studying and was referred to asĀ āsmartā. Weird right?
And finally, to top this week off, I give youĀ theĀ highlight. I met one of my heroes:Ā Colonel Chris HadfieldĀ a real life astronaut, the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station (ISS). Heās amazing. I was literally in awe for 90% of his talk.
Before I get too ahead of myself, Iād like to take on step back. I heard of a tech event hosted by the British Colombia Innovation Council (BCIC) on some online forum. I didnāt spend much time looking into the event. It seemed interesting at face value, so I put it on my calendar. Last night, I opened up my calendar before bed and re-opened the event. To my surprise, I discovered Chris Hadfield was the keynote speaker of the event. Giddy with excitement, I was determined to attend this event. One small problem: they sold out.
I emailed the event coordinators about getting on a wait-list for the event, and they assured me that if I arrived early on (i.e., before 7am) there was a high likelihood of being able to buy a ticket. So I did. Then, I experienced the most inspiring five hours of my entire life.
Many things happened during this event, but these are the most important:
I was allowed to ask Chris Hadfield a question during the QA period. I think the talk will eventually be available to stream online, so you can hear me fumble through it hopefully. I donāt want to spoil it here.
I got a chance to hear the man speak. He has so much insight about problem solving, and his passion about making the world a better place is infectious.
I schmoozed with several CEOās including the president and CEO of the BCIC, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, and the CEOās over several successful startups. I think the only reason why they gave me the time of day was due to my question. Using their words, āAre you the guy that asked the question?ā. I exchanged contact info with all of them (got a total of about ten in total of people worth reaching out to) and they say that they are very interested in talking with me. Weāll see where that goes.
Got a chance to meet Chris Hadfield in the flesh. Like, he grabbed my shoulder⦠and hereās a selfie with him (the managing director of the BC Acceleration Network is the one photobombing us [also got his card]):
What a week. I feel so incredibly excited, inspired, encouraged, and grateful, I feel like Iām going to explode. After the event during my bike to my classes, I laughed hysterically and had to stop and take a few long breaths.
So much on the horizon. Iām lucky to be alive. Thanks mom. Thatās it for now. Love you all.
