Noemi looked down, her stomach churning. How was she going to help Floriana at all? “Amando...said to help you..I’m not medically trained but I was a counselor..I know basic first aid, just tell me what you need.” She insisted, trying not to be sick.

[Sounds of shuffling and groaning can be heard, Noemi’s voice to another person is clear as day.] No, no it’s alright, I’ve got you, we’re going to find Floriana and it’ll be okay. Jax I’m sorry, I really need to go.

He had no time to explain Obvious questions, taking her by the hand and pulling her along in a jog pace, not wanting to run into a Cessation and be shot before he could raise his gun. “You’ll have to do something that’s not your job, but you need to help Mikaela and Floriana recover and aid any wounded, can you do that for me?”

Noemi clutched his hand, tighter than was necessary but she was scared. A Revelation she might be but she handled desk work, that was it. “Recover and aid the wounded? I...Amando I’m not trained medically, I know basic first aid stuff from camp but..” She nodded, “Alright..alright I’ll do whatever they tell me.” She swallowed, hoping her incompetence with medical aid wouldn’t cause someone’s death.

Bones || Self Paragraph

Drabble Prompt: Kill Me

Characters Mentioned: Noemi Cassani, Benjamin Kraft, unnamed cessations. 

Trigger Warnings: Murder, blood, violence.

Noemi’s face contorted into pure anguish. Everything on her face said that she was hurting, that she needed help. The physical pain threatened to knock her down, to crumple her to her knees. Thick, powerful, arms wrapped tightly around her torso, holding her back as another fist connected with Ben’s jaw. 

“Stop! Stop hurting him! Please!” She screamed, her voice a high-pitched wail as she struggled, clawing at the arms that held her back as she was forced to watch. Why were they doing this? It was such a naive question--one Noemi knew the answer to, but her mind was clouded with all they’d gone through.

Not three hours before, they’d been at the bar. Noemi had pulled a disgruntled Ben along with her, fingers laced together though there hadn’t been anything romantic about the gesture. She’d simply wanted a firmer grip as she gave him puppy dog eyes and forced him to the busy establishment. 

Noemi had been excited, after a drink had warmed her system, she’d made her way up to the karaoke stage and had sang her heart out, it had been enjoyable. She’d laughed and slurred her words some, but she’d trusted Ben to get her home safely. Everything would be okay. It always worked out in the end, she’d grown used to that. 

But the Cessations had come and put an end to their happiness. Gloved fingers and peals of laughter as they taunted her were the sounds of joy that filled her ears, rather than the simple evening out. 

“What’s wrong, don’t tell me thats your loverboy?” The recruit laughed, his hand creeping up her side toward her breast. She stomped on his foot as hard as she could, trying again to pull herself free, to remember what Ben had taught her about self-defense, what Glenn had shown her, Amando, anyone. 

The Cessation growled, spitting at her as he shoved her unceremoniously to the cement.

“Stupid bitch!” He growled, his words like venom.

Noemi winced in pain as her pale palms were torn open, crimson seeping from the cracks in her skin. She bit back the tears, determined to be strong but every bone in her body ached furiously and she was so scared. 

She couldn’t lose Ben. She didn’t love him.

She couldn’t love him.

But she cared about him. God she cared about him. 

She willed her eyes to remain open as the Cessations partner took to beating him again and again and again. She could barely recognize him, covered in blood and bruises and swelling flesh. It made her stomach turn and she had to fight to not be sick.

Ben. Sweet Ben. He wasn’t a saint but he deserved so much better than this. 

He was all she could think of. The warmth of his arms around her, his chuckle as he pulled her from the cab and guided her back to her apartment on nights when she was drunk. The vulnerable side of him she witnessed that day at the graveyard. His patient breath as he lined himself up for a shot. 

A shot. 

Her eyes flashed to the gun discarded on the ground. Ben’s gun. It had been torn from him almost immediately, a smart move, something to prevent him from fighting back at full force, but they were distracted now, laughing, pounding against him. Noemi crawled forward, her hands reaching for the sleek black weapon.

It was heavy in her hands, heavier than she expected, and colder than she remembered. Her heart ached terribly. How ironic it would be to end this with his own weapon? And yet she thought of him, staring off at Declan’s grave and she knew, she knew this was the right thing to do.

Ben’s eyes caught hers for the briefest of moments and she could have sworn he was reassuring her. She wouldn’t let the Cessations drag him back to their manor, torture him in the basement for days on end until he spilled the contents of both stomach and mind. 

They were well and truly fucked. 

She lifted the weapon, getting a good clean shot was important. 

Noemi held her breath, tears waiting to fall but she wouldn’t let them, not yet.

Her eyes met Ben’s again and she gave him the tiniest smile she could muster. 

Her curved lips said what she couldn’t. I love you, you’re family to me, and I’ll miss you, asshole. 

Noemi pulled the trigger, watching as Ben’s body slumped in their arms. 

No more pain. No more pain. 

The tears she’d been holding back poured down her cheeks as she dropped the gun, her hands shaking, knowing there would be repercussions but she didn’t care. She didn’t see the Cessations move. She didn’t feel their hands against her or their feet pressing against her shoulder, dislocating the arm. Her eyes were on Benjamin. 

It had been six months, six long months of recovery, if one could call it that. The Cessations that had attacked them had joined Benjamin in the after-life, but Noemi wasn’t the same. She looked down at Amanda as she walked across the grass toward the head stone. 

Declan’s stared back at her, stained still with beer. But it was Benjamin’s that she truly looked to. She unclipped Amanda’s leash, letting her run forward. She curled up in front of the grave, whining. 

Noemi smiled a little. 

“I miss him too.” She agreed, crouching down in front of the head stone. 

She pulled the letter out of her pocket and the tape she’d brought, carefully pinning it to the gravestone. Just in case. He’d said her mother might have read them, who was to say he was wrong, and if he wasn’t, she wanted him to read her letter.

She didn’t cry as she sat back, cracking open a beer before bringing it to her lips. Amanda had curled up at her side. She simply sat, sipping the alcohol, watching the grave stone. Her letter wasn’t long but she truly did hope he’d read it.

Ben,

Things suck, you know. I feel guilty all the time and everyone reassures me that it was right, that you aren’t suffering, all that bullshit. I wish you were here to tell me to grow a pair, to get over it. I miss you. I miss the bruises you’d give me in training. I miss your eye-rolling. I miss trying to figure out what you were thinking.

Have a beer with Declan for me, okay?

The sun was setting and it was getting chilly but she didn’t feel the cold. Her fingers brushed through Amanda’s fur. She smiled, trying to pretend she wasn’t breaking apart, that her world hadn’t been shattered that night.  

She looked down, Amanda was resting her head on Noemi’s lap.

“Kiss me hardy, kiss me quick.” She mumbled, her eyes moving back to the gravestone. 

Rest well, Benjamin. You’ve earned it.

Is there ever a time when you don’t work too much?” she seemed to be buried in her work most of the time, probably reason why she never accepted his invitation to go out. But one day soon, she’ll give in “You need a longer break than a weekend, otherwise you will go crazy.”

She laughed, “I know you’re not. I’m only teasing.” She promised, but she sat back, tucking her knees up into her chest. A yawn escaped her lips and she quickly moved her hand. She’d been up with Guiliana, worrying constantly. Her best friend was one of the most important people in the world, and well, she was a mother hen when it came to those she cared about. Plus, there was the problems with her having tricked Amando, but she’d had the best intentions over it. It was just frustrating. “I know, I know but my job is what it is, Jax.” She shrugged. “I’ll tell you what.” She glanced at her phone, “I have exactly forty-eight minutes to go grab lunch if you’d like to go with me?” She offered. “It’s the best I can do on such short notice for forgetting to invite you to girls night.” She added, grinning at him.
