MINUS 4, PLUS 1
BY CHRISTIAN JED CUA
Friends are like mathematical equations, they range from simple to complex. They give an understanding to an amount, prepare one to resolve a theory, and become the basis of infrastructural construction. What I always see are values, percentages, numbers, and shapes. Friends are like that until you solve them; I hate that they become complex out of necessity or the lack of it, but like it when they become understood. But at some point, I grow tired of the complexity and just bug out for my own necessity.
Where I was part of a friend group of 5. In the group, I was the introverted one who would always be there when academics or personal were involved and not to be seen ever again. At the time, I just wanted to finish high school with friends rather than loathe it. Leon, who is the big brother of the group, especially in age. I respected him as he could be as independent of everyone when needed, especially when we didn’t know it; he had skills and the reputation of the entire school from what I’ve seen. Straightforward from point A to point B at work, but a triangle of many variations outside it. Mark, the one whom I somehow reflected on if I had been more of a contradiction where boldness and shyness met and where one could ask for the latest anime or manga to read for laughs. The irrationality of negative and positive makes him the wildcard of the group, neither hate nor much care. Then there’s George, everything positive within us combines within him. He makes the group’s image alone or than with us. Francis, the X but Y. He is a man of God, without the attitude that resonates with one. A high maintenance success, I could never imagine parting with these people in the 8th grade, as we sat in the back rows until we were upfront.
Even more in the 9th where the supplement of bonds made us complement each other, so we could nosedive ourselves in the 10th where separation of classrooms was the cause and the outgrowth demanded new roots. Unfortunately, it would be me.
I grew tired of the constant differences and difficult irrationality outweighing the common beneficial sum. Leon had his own agenda, Mark became more aggressively alien, George became corrupted by the others, and Francis I had enough of being a battery for his grade. I had my role fulfilled and was no longer of use. Therefore, by the abrupt end of the school 2019-2020 year, so did I close the connection. Any thoughts of connection, whether important or null, were halted. Why bring back something that lost its place? I saw the writing on the chalkboard; was of no use to them. The only reason I joined was for mathematical assistance, yet that itself became forlorn.
Learning to crawl with my own sweat and tears to find such idiocy out. I set a standard for myself on what friends were now and what kind I needed.
Foremost was common interests. Without them, there is no value. One must have something that connects the other to build another, or else there is no connection at all. Second was personality, lest everything fall apart. A compulsory mandate that we neither repulse one another too much, but not also become combined into one. Third is compatibility. Do we resonate in the manner of a theorem, or do we become a chemical reaction? Of course, it could be both, especially in tight situation, but we must know the chemistry where it lies and ends. Finally, is mutual understanding. High school does not last long anymore, like it did. College is four years away, and I require a friend and only a friend out of necessity of connection rather than romantic attachment, as stereotypically seen in forms of new media.
I expected that I would meet friends in the online classes in front of computers easier than face to face, yet sadly never coming to fruition. Or at least not in the image or quantitative nature of my vision. At some point, I just gave up. The first semester of 2020-2021 was another academic year under COVID-19 was the time I knew that the connection to the physical classroom had so much effect on the mind. The experience is a negative one. Zero already describes how much relation I feel towards others in the atmosphere of it lacking companionship of classmates in hands on group tasks or noise made worse by the connection volatility of communications provider. That is, until the second semester, where I found her, the person who fit all four.
A common interest in the arts, specifically in drawing, a cheerful personality that I can relate with, we combine as a compound solution, and are very good terms of friendship. Marie and I barely have disagreements, which I am grateful for, as drama isn’t my cup of tea.
From having four friends who negatively impacted me, to losing them and gaining one. Friends are like mathematical equations. They are either simple or complex, and solving them is equivalent to insight of understanding each one of them. At some point, it becomes difficult for one side and a mistake outweighs the effort necessary to answer such. Friends are like that. They can be complex or simple, much more so when in numbers. That’s why I chose only one this time. I'll stick to the positive one I have now, rather than negative fours that lost me.
CRADLE OF THE GENIUS
BY LIBERTY ZOE DAJAY
We may not yet have the ability to physically travel through time, but mental time travel to the good old days is a rather cheap and effective way to feel better when we are unsure, uncertain, and uncomfortable.
I was elated and honoured to visit such a place with vintage, and historical things with an olden days vibe that was never forgotten by many. It was a perfect day that my Mom decided to visit the town and have relaxation and to see scenic beauties like this place for it was unforeseen yet unconceivable to experience.
This place is called Calamba, Laguna. Yes, I once visited the hometown of the National Hero of the Philippines Dr. Jose P. Rizal, where the famous lake Laguna De Bay can be seen.
Things happened so fast that I could still remember when I was in middle school, where I just caught myself yawning the whole period of class when my history teacher was discussing and yearning about the origin of Jose Rizal, I mean who cares about the past at that certain age, right? But anyway, there I was seeing myself having goosebumps while crossing the road towards the house and the Museo of Rizal.
As we entered the gate, we saw this long table with computers where people register their names for a record assisted by one of the guards and after that you can already explore the awe inspiring and nostalgic home of Jose Rizal. First to sight is an old carriage that was used for transportation back then, and upon entering, we saw this authentic, simple and typical ground floor design of an old house and you could say it was history. There are a lot of timelines, statues and books that Dr. Jose Rizal wrote.
We also took a peek at some records and handwriting of Rizal’s mother, but we were confused and took the time to understand what was being said as it was written in a cursive and Spanish language, and that made me even more astonished by this place.
After filling our heads with history, we decided to take a quick look of the second floor of the house as the guard was rushing people before the closing time of the place, but as soon as we get there, I could only wish to stay for few more hours until I satisfy myself from seeing these ancient vague things. There, you could see the imposing living room, old bedrooms for the boys and girls, kitchen, and other stuff. Seeing those makes me want to wear the Philippines’ National costume called “Filipiñana” and to go back to the times of yore. As we finished the mesmerising internal of the house, we then decided to gasp more things exploring the outside beauty of the infrastructure. The breeze of the wind and the impressive natural beauty of this land are said to have inspired many poets and artists because it is an ideal place for individuals who want to gain inspiration and peacefulness.
I never felt anything like it before, this place is old and there is no guarantee when will this last, but one thing is for sure, it really was history and it’s something that you want to bring and cherish on your way back. This place helped me experience, understand, appreciate, and reminisce about the wistful past.
All I can say is that it was a spectacular experience and I still couldn’t believe that I was born in Calamba, Laguna. The Cradle of the Genius Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippines National Hero who saved us from being chained, and who gave Liberty to our country.
HIGH SCHOOL DAY
BY PRAISEY ELLA GABION
Nostalgic memories are ineradicable, remains vivid, and have heartwarming memory in a person's life.
What is it about this time in our lives that seem more meaningful and memorable than any other? My experience in high school leads me to believe that many factors interact to make our adolescent memories so vivid. When I think back on a high school day as the best day of my life and long for the "good old days," that day was filled with joy and excitement, and emotions equal strong memories; even the music from that day imprinted on my brain like nothing else; A memory that will live on in my mind forever, a memory that rekindled me.
It was the year 2020, and on February 26th, the most anticipated event of all time happened- HIGH SCHOOL DAY! I could feel the joy and excitement lingering in my inner self as I entered the field. There are numerous programs and competitions, such as the battle of the bands, poster-making contests, SIKAT dance competitions, and many others. But there is one event that I will never forget, one that changed me and helped me grow into a more confident person.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am not the most outgoing person in the world. I prefer to keep to myself, and I rarely do things outside my comfort zone. I was allowed to participate in KNCHS Next Top Model. I thought to myself, "What's the worst that could happen?" and I decided to join. I was very nervous about it at first for a variety of reasons. First, I was concerned that the other girls would think I wasn't good enough to be a model. Second, I lack confidence, especially when beauty is the basis (I was terrified). Third, I haven't always been the most at ease in front of large crowds, and I sometimes worry about just being myself. But I overcame my nerves and ended up having the best time.
I ignored the crowd's fear, mainly because it's so bright on stage that you can't see anyone in their seats. I was able to gain a lot of confidence in myself by just being myself and letting people see who I am. Participating in that event allowed me to learn a great deal and gain valuable life lessons and skills.
As I walked across the stage wearing my designer's masterpiece, I showed them my fierce look, just like a model. Backstage, all of us girls cheered each other on, wished each other luck, and encouraged one another throughout the event. And I was surprised when the host called my name and announced it in second place. It was so much fun to be with all of those girls, and I will be eternally grateful for the experience I had during the high school day.
My nostalgic memories from the year 2020 were unforgettable and irreplaceable. Everything seems perfect, vivid, and still on my mind. For a brief moment, High School Day was the happiest and most significant event of my life. And I learned that it's not all about competing and winning; it's about being yourself, making the most of the experience, and making friendships and memories that you'll cherish for the rest of your life. High school day, a day that filled my mind with nostalgic memories of happy days.
A TRAGIC START
BY JUDITH MARIE FELONGCO
“Every life story has its own unique beginning, it could be good or bad, a blessing or a curse.. But in my life story, it began with a tragedy…”
Judith Marie F. Felongco was the name given to a new born baby that came out on November 12, 2003 which is me. The birth of a newborn must be celebrated, but when I was born that day; my family was in a panic. The details in this story are all based on what they told me. My mom and dad are expecting me to be born on November 10 and my mom went on labor that day but, the problem was she had a hard time giving birth to me normally, it’s like I didn’t want to come out of my mother’s belly. Since it didn’t work the first try, they decided to let my mom rest first because they thought that maybe I wasn’t ready to come out yet, so they moved it on November 11.
When my mom tried delivering me normally again, it still didn't work. I was too big to push out and my mom couldn’t handle the pain, so it resulted in a caesarean. My mom agreed since they don’t have any choice.
In the morning of November 12, 2003. A baby girl was born, I was born… But, something went wrong. I was all yellow, I was overdue which resulted in me getting poisoned by my own faeces inside my mother’s belly. I was almost dead at that time, my dad was starting to think about doing unthinkable things just to save me, good thing one of my Godfathers was there to calm him down.
The doctor told my parents that I had to be referred to another hospital that’ll be capable of saving me and it’s St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gensan, it cost a lot but my grandmother didn’t care how expensive it got, all she wanted was for me to live, so my grandmother paid for the hospital bills and since I had to be there fast because I only had hours left to live, my dad drove the ambulance himself because the driver was nowhere to be found. When I got to St. Elizabeth, I was immediately put in a room and was contained in a small compartment that was surrounded by twelve fluorescent lights, it’s like I was being incubated. My nanay and tatay visited there too and they even told me that they couldn't come close to me because of the heat radiating outside the compartment I was in.
But alas, all is well, since I'm still here typing this. I was lucky enough to be saved that day, and I'm lucky to have my family beside me that day. My Grandma gave me my name, “Judith”; because I was a survivor like Queen Judith in the bible. My life story may have a tragic start, but I don’t really mind, everyone has a story of their own and here’s mine. It might not be as interesting as others but, it’ll still be a core memory in my life story.
ARNIS
BY ALIYA FONTANILLA
When I was 10, I started playing Arnis, the sport that was to go on and give me the most privileged opportunities and experiences in life. What ensued was lifelong friendships, world travel, and unforgettable life lessons.
I grew up in San Felipe here in Tantangan, and an athlete of San Felipe Elementary School. Before I got to play Arnis I was one a swimmer, badminton player, volleyball player and also I’ve tried to compete in Dancesport where I got the Best in cha-cha way back 2015. The time where Provincial meet is coming here in our Municipality the coach of Arnis Team encourage me to play Arnis because they ran out of players and maybe other students are afraid to try arnis because it has a stick and they are afraid of fighting. So at first I am also afraid but I said to myself “what if I try playing arnis?” then the other day I join the audition or try-out of their team so luckily they choose to be their player so I’m also thankful for that. So that’s the start of my journey at playing Arnis.
In 2016, we competed at Palarong Pambansa at Bicol, Albay and that was my first time, the happiest time of my life. Every time I think of it I nearly cry because that was my first time riding a ferry and also the memories that we’ve shared with my teammates. Those eyes that cried during the training, those injuries we’ve got it all paid off even though we didn’t win, at least we’re on rank 4 out of how many regions in the Philippines.
Our coach was a gentle soul and his passion for the game and his ability to get the best out of his team was a testament to his coaching methods. I have often reflected how grateful I am that my first Arnis coach was a respectful, honorable man and allowed the experience of my first foray into the sport of Arnis to be so positive and fun. This meant that my love of the game just grew and grew, and at no point throughout my career did I come across a coach who made me feel uncomfortable or led me to not wanting to play my beloved game of Arnis. I consider myself to be extremely lucky that my rights to train and play in a safe environment were never compromised.
No matter what gender they are, all athletes at every level have the right to be protected from harassment and abuse and to play in a safe and positive environment. Sadly, there are heartbreaking stories all over the world of athletes who have been abused by the very person they should be able to trust the most.
CHRISTMAS EVE
BY RACHEL ANNE GENEROSO
We should cherish and treasure every moment before they become memories, Because we will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.
Christmas eve is one of the most anticipated events for most people in the world. The cold breeze of December always gives us the feeling of excitement. And we always experience feelings of excitement and warmth when thinking about spending time with our loved ones and receiving and sending gifts to the people we loved. We also experience nostalgia when we think back to what makes Christmas special to us, and we always bind our faith by attending the traditional “simbang Gabi.” It gives us the opportunity to reflect, and be thankful for the gift of life. And seeing all the Christmas lights in the streets that shine like a star, gives a peaceful and fulfilling feeling inside of us. And as a child Christmas or Christmas eve is way more magical to us, as we have those magical imaginations and carefree actions that gives us genuine happiness. And Christmas eve is not just the most significant day of my life, it is also one of the most memorable days of my life.
And growing up as a child I always see the world as a magical place where I can live freely, And become someone who I want to be. I always believe that everyday is a gift that we should enjoy and be thankful for. And as a child I always believed in Santa, I always took note of the gifts and surprises of Christmas to me and to my family. And Christmas eve is my most favorite day of my life every year, because I always enjoy helping my mom decorating our house, watching her cooking our favorite foods, and most of all I loved seeing the smiles and happiness of my mom when dad always held her hand and give her a slow dance as a gift every Christmas eve. And that’s how Christmas eve became one of the most significant days of my life, a life where I can be genuinely happy and complete.
And at the age of nine at 10:34 in the Christmas eve year 2013, my imaginations and my world had broken. And I’m not familiar with the pain that my heart was feeling that time. Because it’s Christmas eve we should be happy and exchanging gifts, and I should see the bright smile of my mom. But at that moment I only see my mom struggling to breath and fighting for her life. And before 11 pm my mom decided to celebrate Christmas in heaven. I witnessed how she cries inside, because she doesn't have the capacity to open her eyes, and how she fights to live her life more. Remembering all of those moments makes me feel broken everyday in my life, Wishing that Santa could help me and still give us a wonderful Christmas eve.
And As I grow older as a woman, I always wonder how life Would be if my mom was still here. And I always regret every moment that I did not spend with my mom, Christmas eve will never be the same without her. Her presence will always live in my heart, and I will forever be thankful and grateful for her unconditional love. and that’s how my Christmas eve became also one of the most memorable heartbreaking days of my life. And the biggest lesson that I’ve learned is we should always appreciate moments in our life as it happens, because moments pass and we wish we had treasure them more. And today I became a woman who still has dreams. But, I also have many doubts about myself. I’m not as brave as I was as a child. But I realize deeply that the present moment is all that I have, So I must take risks in order for me to find who I really want to be.
Christmas eve is still one my favorite days of the year, Because the presence of my mom will always live in my heart, as I smile and face this lifetime.
UNCONTRALLABLE CHANGES
BY CYRINE JOY ESPULGAR
Each day, we encounter different matters and deal with it but sometimes, some matters can also lead to an uncontrollable change.
The existence of COVID-19 in our world became the fear of many people. A threat that we believe can end someone’s life when they get infected. The world became quiet unexpectedly and the things we can see and feel around everyday have changed into seeing nothing but empty roads and a quiet atmosphere. COVID-19 brought a lot of challenges not just challenged people to avoid getting infected but also challenged how to survive in our daily lives.
Year 2019, before the pandemic occurred, I do joyful things and create unforgettable moments each day with the people around me. During those normal days I can freely do everything we want without fear of cough, fever, cold and other common symptoms, no distance between anyone and communicate with them face to face without any limitations. I even hang out with my friends after school or sometimes stay inside the school to practice or do any group activity which I enjoy when going to school. Moreover, I didn’t experience staying at home for the whole day, I really do go outside because of school work. During summer vacation I am usually asked by my family members to go out and buy this and that and it’s easy for me to interact with the people passing by.
Everything had changed when the COVID-19 virus scattered all around the world year 2020. The habits, physical activities, face to face interaction and way of communication had changed that made me feel so new in this world, then the government implemented hard lockdown that made people stay at home and no work, no source of income, no loitering outside aside from those front liners, and the worst thing is the academic freeze. These changes affected my whole life. I slowly accept and embrace the uncontrollable changes just like a quiet atmosphere with no vehicles to see and hear its noise and months have passed. I experienced a lot of struggles, especially those days when the government decided to continue the academics through online communication. It made me worry about how to learn by myself since all those lockdown days made my mind empty but I faced my fear and continued to the next level of life during the pandemic.
After a year the normal life became the new normal from the year 2021 until now, workers can work, I can go to where I want but with limitations and bring the required safety things wherever I go. The pandemic really changed my life, my way of interaction, and habits. I don’t like going outside these months, it feels like people are new in my sight. I feel so new with roads and became a person who doesn't feel the atmosphere aside from home. I can remember the old normal days but the feeling of being alone is kind of the best for me.
Every moment and things I’ve experienced before made me think that the changes are not normal but it is uncontrollable because of the unexpected things that have happened. Before the pandemic, change of small things didn't matter, I embraced it instead but these changes caused by the pandemic didn’t change only my habits but also the way of life in this world. I was thinking of how to bring back my personal doings but these days it’s hard to think of a way to bring the normal life in the present. I hope someday this new normal will make a good impact in my life so that I can also do things I did before the pandemic, spend my days normally and accept the changes whether it’s a positive or negative change.
Uncontrollable change made me realize how to imagine facing my tomorrow.
TRANSITION
BY JOANA MAY PARDELLO
Over dramatic, overreacting, overthinking, drama, have you been told by someone those words?, or have you ever said those words to others?
Anxiety, depression, trauma from the past, of the present, and of the future. Are you familiar with those? You haven't? Oh I envy you so much. To those who are not familiar with it, let me do the honor to introduce it to you. Those are the thoughts that keep a person like me all night. If the monster under your bed keeps you from sleeping peacefully, well those are the thoughts that keeps me from living freely. Yeah? Still not ringing any bells? Oh and there's more. It's like the trigger of the gun that can be pulled any moment and… goodbye. To be clear, it's like Satan's whisper.
Doubts, worries, fear, and uncertainty. We as humans inevitably can't avoid those horror realities. Yes, I can't say anything about these emotions anymore. We've been through that hell many times, and still. The word is terrifying enough to speak for itself.
A lot of people have experienced these kinds of emotions since this Covid-19 pandemic started. Who would've thought that staying inside our so-called "home" could give us such torment. A torture if you ask me.
Why?
Let me share this with you.
Way back in 2019, everything was fine and normal. I'm enjoying my blossoming youth and building myself to be who I wanted to be in the future. Knowing me, knowing my friends, creating the right circle, and going to places. I still wanna do it. Exploring my potential and discovering myself.
My sanity is still intact.
December 31, 2019 the sun shines brightly as it sets for the last moment of the year, 2019. Sending farewell to the year with a beautiful crimson sky.
As I watched the sunset from our terrace, I was stunned. It's so beautiful. I felt peace as I stared at it until its bright was gone. I can still remember the words I've said minutes before the surroundings completely turned dark. I said in a very calm whisper, "Salamat sa taon na ito. Ang ganda ng paglubog mo. Ito pala ibig sabihin ng payapa. Ang ganda mo tingnan, I appreciate you. Ang tingnan ka sa huling pagkakataon ng paglubog mo ngayong taon ay isang pahinga." I teared a little as I felt joy and gratitude for how exciting and fun that year was. Without knowing that it would be the last time I will feel that sanctuary.
Morning of January 1st 2020 already felt tiring. Well, me and my family partied last night during the New Year celebration. Who would have thought that the year 2020 would give me a new stage in my life. It will change me as a person and as "me". I prayed that this year would be kind to me and hopefully favor me, but God answered my prayer differently.
It was already night and we're eating dinner with my family while watching TV. The news was all about the flu or that virus that came all the way from China. The news warned us to be careful and to stay healthy. More nights and more news about the virus. And it's getting worse as many people are getting infected. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020, and a pandemic on 11 March 2020.
First Week of the month of March when our school declares not to go to school until the third week of March. At first, we were so happy because we thought it's only a break. We spent our days going outside hanging out. There is no strict restriction yet. I stayed late at night playing online games and overslept in the morning. I felt free because there's no school work to worry about. I enjoyed the days without classes and I admit at the very beginning it was happy and fun.
Days and weeks have passed and we're still not allowed to go to school yet. We haven't started our fourth quarter yet. I asked myself "what is happening? Can we still graduate at this rate?" My friends are worried too, we miss each other and we wanna go back inside our silid where we feel we belong. We don't have a choice but to obey the order. They said it's for our safety.
The news everyday is all about Covid-19. I listened attentively to it as it broadcast the alarming number of deaths of the infected people. As I listened to the news, I felt like I was transported to another dimension. That other dimension I was talking about my inner self where I hid all of my fear. I've been brought there with my own thoughts and the only emotion I can feel at that time was fear. I'm scared. I got paranoid. So many "what ifs" running through my mind.
What if my parents would get infected? What if my grandparents get infected too?
What if I get infected and die?
No!
Will I be able to live without my parents? Can I stand on my own?
What about my siblings?
Where can we get our financial support? How can we eat?
What if……?
How….?
I don't know anymore!
Before I knew it, I found myself lost. Drowned in thoughts and hanging. What just happened?
Days gone by but I'm still trying to sink in on what's really happening.
"So this is it?"
Unlike before, I stayed inside my room all day scrolling through social media, playing online games, reading manga and doing anything that can shake my fear and boredom. Until I realized that, although I'm doing many things, I am not genuinely happy.
The height of the pandemic brought a lot of realization to me. I've realized that among all the certain, death is absolute. Once you're gone, you're done. It taught me that each one of us aren't equal in terms of life standing. I've seen my family suffer financially, and so have some of my friends. But it also showed me that some fortunate people don't do as much as we do to have financial support that can support their living. That harsh reality made me wanna do more to achieve the ideal life that I want to have. But how? I can't even go outside due to some restrictions. For a moment, I felt useless. The fact that I can't do anything yet frustrates me.
The nothingness that we have during the pandemic really gave me emotional damage. Don't get me wrong, God doesn't fail to provide our daily needs. But in order for those needs to be provided and attained we need to work hard, and my mother is the one who struggled a lot. None of us wants to see our mother getting exhausted and tired. If I can only switch places with her, I would be the one to work hard for us.
That's not all of it, I also had anxiety and overthink about what might happen to me in the future? Will I be able to find a job? Will I be useful to my family? As the eldest daughter, all the pressure is on me. My parents don't pressure me, to be clear. It's my own urge to want to help my parents provide for our daily needs.
Before I knew it, I was completely drowned by my own thoughts. Consumed by the fear and uncertainty of what ahead me. The emotional state that I am in got me paralyzed, unable to do anything, but to cry. It prevents me from thinking straight and living freely. Sire it's nice having a good heart that wants to help, but a good heart is not enough, and it hurts. I'm sure some of you completely understand me.
Up until now I'm still fighting for survival, not just for my living but I am fighting for my dreams. Although this pandemic hazed my vision in life, it won't stop me from having my ideal life.
For now, all I can do is to pray and trust in his process. Take some actions towards my dream and to at least survive everyday. I know someone truly loves me and it is enough foundation to make me stand up at my pedestal.
To those teenagers that are currently experiencing and feeling what I'm feeling right now, we got this!
Don’t give up!

SIARGAO ISLAND
BY CHRISTIAN PAUL BERCADES
The beach always gives you the feeling of being relaxed and satisfied, the sound of the water, hearing the crashing waves, and feeling the cool breeze of the ocean is somehow therapeutic.
It is not new for people to hear the place called "Siargao Island." Siargao, also regarded as the Philippines' "Surfing Capital," is mostly responsible for bringing surfing to the country. Aside from the waves of the beach, the reason why people keep coming back to Siargao is that the island is not just for surfers but also home to other exciting activities that are ideal for non-surfers. There are waterfalls, lagoons, and caverns, as well as white-sand beaches, scenic islands, and blue-green waters that are ideal for snorkeling and diving.
May 19, 2019, in the afternoon when we started our journey to Siargao island with my Friends. It is a perfect time to relax and escape from reality. We totally planned to go to Siargao since it is famous all over the Philippines. We save a lot of money to spend a week on the Island because it is far from our own homes. When we arrived at Siargao Island, we were shocked at how beautiful the Island is. It is so beautiful to see it in person rather than in pictures. The scenery, waves, ambiance, seascape, relaxation and far from stress. As I look around the Island, there is still more to see, there are a lot of places to go and lots of activities to enjoy. The excitement in our hearts filled with surprises and happiness. No wonder why this island is one of the gems in the Philippines.
We planned to try out surfing, but suddenly we didn’t continue because it was costly. We spent a week in Siargao and went to the same place every day to enjoy the activity. Also, the very delicious foods that they had. The food was not that expensive, but it was very tasty. They also have local and international cuisine. In the evening, we don’t know if they will have an event or a live band jamming. We had taken a lot of pictures to keep them as memories.
I always smile every time I remember the experience on Siargao Island. The waves that remind me to return there with someone I will love in the future.
Siargao Island is the most unforgettable memory that I have experienced in my life. But it is sad to know that the island is destroyed because of the heavy rainfall, or so-called "bagyo". But I don’t lose hope because I know that the island will recover in a few months or a year. Hopefully, someday I will go back there and experience the same experience as before, but that day I will be with someone that I love.
WORKING STUDENT
BY JHON VAN LAPU
Education is the key to success and teachers make a lasting impact on the lives of their students (Ortiz, 2006). However, education remains a privilege in the Philippines. In this situation, how can we achieve success if we who belong to the poor class in society can’t afford education? Are our lives worth living? Can we still have the chance to chase our dreams? According to John Dewey, “Education is all one with growing; it has no end beyond itself” (Democracy and Education, 1916). It suggests that education is a continuous process of learning that enables individuals to grow. But how can we experience this growth if we can’t pursue education due to financial problems? I am confronted with the same situation that is common among the working poor class in the country.
I am Jan Van Lapu, an 18-year-old student originally from Koronadal City, South Cotabato. I am the third child among four children. My father is Tahir Lapu originally from Sultan Kudarat where he wasn’t able to finish his college degree and provides for our family only through farming while my mother Erma Jean Lapu originally from the Municipality of Surallah and is a housekeeper. Humbly speaking, we are complete and happy but the hurdle in our lives is financial problems. I can see that everyone experiences financial difficulty at some point in their life. But, looking at this problem from the perspective of the less fortunate class, the degree of such a problem varies. As time passes by, I keep on asking myself, “Why are there differences?” and “Why are we poor?”.
But it is true that reaching my dreams doesn’t depend on social status and, amidst the crisis, I still aim to achieve my biggest dream. It won’t be easy but the difficult process won’t be a hindrance for me. From what life has taught me so far, I just need to focus on that goal and I should be there soon. Being a student and working at the same time is tough; it divides my time among friends, family, studies, and work. I don’t have much quality time with my friends and family since I have to work to provide for my studies aside from studying and going to school. Moreover, I couldn’t have enough time to study because my body demands rest from work. Although it is difficult to balance my academic and work life, I gradually got used to it.
There are a few habits that helped me juggle studies and work which can help other working students and students who plan to apply for a part-time job. Every time I wake up, I always pray and thank Allah for another day that He gave me. To share this goodness with anyone, especially with my co-workers and classmates, is like a contagious disease that gives them a reason to always smile. If you make Allah the foundation of your life, He, the Creator, will always strengthen you and give you blessings every day. With Allah on our side, don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams because He will provide you with strength. Allah never gives a trial that you cannot deal with; He wants you to be strong enough to face the hurdles of your life. My story might not be that grand but, no matter how small or big the problem that life will throw at me, I will do well because God is the center of my life and I bear in mind that God is with me.
A job on the side might conflict with our studies. Most students are well-provided by their parents which means that they can focus on their studies and improve their marks. In this case, working might make our student life difficult but it can help us get through college. On the one hand, it helps us with our financial obligation in school. On the other hand, it is also like having a savings account for your future. Some people might see working-students as subjects of disgrace but such status does not define people. On the contrary, it shows that you are strong enough to face the problems and reach your dreams. Hence, we go back to our question, “Are our lives worth living?” Yes, it is. You are not worthless because you have been given life. The mere fact that you breathe signifies that you can do so much with what you have been given. Furthermore, we should refresh our mindset and develop a positive idea about being a working student. Remember that acceptance is a key to work effectively.
Job and studies bring lots of tasks to accomplish in a day. However, remember that worrying won’t solve your problems (Sir David H.); it’ll just waste your time and energy. Find a solution. If you cannot afford to pay for your financial obligation at school do not just stay inside the box; the world outside offers solutions, which is why we found a job to provide for our needs as poor students. If you can spread your wings and fly, then do it. Why not? We have a chance to chase our dreams and to grow for a better future if we always bear in mind not the criticism but the lessons and goals.
In conclusion, being a working student doesn’t define us as worthless and conclude that we don’t have a chance for a bright future. Good habits will help us achieve our goals. Our perseverance, motivation, and trust and faith in God will fuel us towards success. In a socially stratified society where it is difficult to step up the ladder, dreams are not easy to chase for the less privileged. Some people might get the chance to start but others will be left to keep on chasing while only a few will reach their goals. However, you have to be persistent despite the stumbling blocks in achieving your goal. Face it with enthusiasm and a strong passion so that nothing will be impossible. “No guts, no glory” (Blesse, n.d.).

January 10, 2022: ‘’ I battled with this feeling for a while, then I looked in the mirror and saw an ugly woman with bags under her eyes, unkempt hair, thin arms, and a skinny body. She was repulsive. She mocked me, reminding me that I was nobody. She studies every night, exhausting herself with all of the schoolwork and pressure. I felt an overwhelming sense of self-hatred take over, and I knew there was no turning back. But why was this happening at this precise moment? I'm hoping…This will be the end…’’

March 15, 2022: ‘’ Despite my efforts to pull myself out of the deep, dark hole to which I had fallen, this battle raged on. This day, the most horrible feeling overcame me; it wasn't a new feeling, but it was one I didn't want to be experiencing at the time. The woman I respect came to me and said, ''Abi ko bright ka? ngaa may line of 8 ka?'' I remained silent and replied, "I promise, that will never happen again." I smiled, walked slowly to my room, and burst into tears…pointless, flowing tears. I realized the mixed feelings of rage and sadness had followed me. How was I going to make it through the day? I'm scared and anxious about the prospect of "what if someone finds out about this battle I've been having?" So, what should I say? I'm terrified…’’

“Ah, our adviser gave us our report cards today.. And mine isn’t looking that great. Come on.. I mean I totally expected this but I didn't expect it to be this low.. 89 for my average grade?.. Ah hell nah.. I'm pretty sure once I tell my mother, she will flip just cuz I didn't get an average over 90..and worse! It’s lower than 90.. What the heck. I’m not telling her.. I’ll just act like I forgot to show her or, it wasn't given to us yet.. I mean.. What's the point of taking acting classes if I don’t use it right?.. I hid my grades from her because I was scared.. The pressure is building up everyday, especially now that I'm graduating senior high.. I’ll be in college soon, I just don’t wanna let everyone down.. I’ll just work harder in 2nd grading..”

“Maybe I could call this day the BEST day ever! Ok so my mom and I went to the school to get my report card and AAAAAH I got a 91! I felt so happy seeing my grades! Most of them skyrocketed omg.. I mean I did my best this grading so my hard work paid off!! When my mom saw my report card.. I can tell that she felt happy for me too! And for comparison.. I finally showed her my card during 1st grading. .welp that's one way of saying “I failed but at least nakabawi!” at least she seemed less mad at me when she saw my cards.. Phew.. to be honest, I felt so relieved when I saw her reaction.. I really thought she’d give me another long lecture about being lazy and having a lot of distractions aka drawing, games, chatting with my friends. But at least that's done! I don’t have to worry anymore..”

December 29, 2021: I wake up so early, because I have to prepare all the things that I will need. Because finally I could have the vacation that I deserve, and I cannot wait to hear the peaceful sound of the waves and the warmth breeze of the sea, and the fresh air that could bring inner peace within myself. Cause it's been a year since the waves kissed my feet. And at 6 o'clock in the evening we started to take off to our destination. As I sit in the backseat of the car, I enjoy watching the lights that shines like a star, and I realize deeply that sometimes we neglect beautiful things around us, but the truth is there are beautiful things you can only see in the dark, and these beautiful Stars and lights are one of the example of it.

December 30, 2021: I suddenly wake up when the light of the sun touches my skin. I'm exhausted, because of the long trip that we had. But as my eyes See's the blue ocean, I suddenly jump on excitement. It feels like the voice of the sea speaks to my soul, And I run as fast as I can towards the sea. I feel like I'm gonna cry out of happiness because, finally, the waves kiss my feet. It was pure happiness that I've been longing for 1 year in my life. After enjoying playing with the wild waves in the sea and having a time only for myself, they decided that we should try the banana boat. And I'm so excited, because it's my first time. And we waited for 30 minutes for our turn, and when it was our turn I felt so nervous, I felt like my heart was gonna explode of excitement and nervousness. But it was amazing. The cold breeze gives an ease to my mind, and the splash of the waves hits us like a seawall, and I enjoy being one with the ocean. It was pure happiness, truly my heart belongs to the sea.

Having a panic attack disorder is not that easy, people may say you're just overreacting or something that i just only want attention, like i fake it they say. But no, Having a panic attack is something that you can't handle because you can breathe properly because you are panicking about something and they can't see that i am struggling too. I can’t tell them that because I know that they can't understand it. The worst part is that I get bullied because of having a panic attack. When I am going to school I am panicking already because I'm scared of people, especially the people that I don't know personally. I am overthinking that they will hurt me or something just like that and it is very annoying for me because I am panicking about something that didn’t happen. It started when I was in grade 6.

Until I am in grade 9. 6-9 is the worst part of my school year because I only go to school 5 times a month. But when I'm in school, I panic. I can't breathe properly because I am overthinking. When it happened I called my parents to fetch me. But when I was in grade 10, I slowly learned how to control it and i don't usually absent. And I thanked God.

Summary of August 15, 2018: “Mask all my pain hold back my tears I'm going insane, nobody knows” This song line by Russ summed up my feelings today. I listen to this song whenever I feel so down. Yesterday, my father died but I don’t want them to see me wailing. I forced myself to be strong because my family and relatives are around. I want to keep my sanity; I don’t want them to see me cry because they’ll be weak and will cry with me. I don’t want them to pity me. This is just an obstacle to make me stronger. I am proud of myself that I handled my emotions. I accept God’s plans for me. I know he’ll guide me throughout my journey in life. These are my thoughts throughout the day. I have no choice but to be strong.

Summary of August 14, 2019: It was a year when my father died. I didn’t expect that as time passes by, you’ll realize that you are craving the presence of your loved one and it really hurts because you have no choice but to reminisce about the memories of being together. It was a rough year to heal. I believe that you’ll never heal if you lose the most special person in your life. It will leave a scar in your heart that you’ll carry for the rest of your life. I always cry randomly at a random place and time. I keep wanting his hugs and presence. My father shows up in my dream whenever I cry of grief missing him. He is happy and always smiling in my dreams. I ponder that he’s at peace now together with my mother. I am glad to see him in my dreams but I wake up crying missing him so much. I hope I’ll heal from the wounds I am keeping to myself. My silent battles that I’ll win soon.
