i feel like so much discussion of child neglect is insistent upon the axiom that children rightfully need a parent -- as in, a parent as opposed to and above any other form of caretaking -- and the refusal to problematise that role/relationship has always put me off this concept. #yes. exactly.#this is probably not what op meant #but my mother died when i was very young and afterwards i lived with a woman #a relative / my guardian who wanted me to change my name #so i would seem like her child instead of well. a bastard? or something #she despised me and still does. took years for us to be around other relatives again.#and they immediately noticed that she treated me Wrong #and i’ve gotten these platitudes since that she should’ve been a better mother #i didn’t need a mother.#i needed quite literally any emotionally mature adult.#she probably resented me because i didn’t accept her as my mother.#as a child in school they made me make mother’s day gifts for her #even though i insisted my mother was dead and it made me uncomfortable #they couldn’t comprehend that.#and i think it stems from the same issue.#it makes people upset to think of mothers as Bad or Dead #they want to ignore reality because it makes them uneasy #thus it becomes another burden for the child
