Fair warning that this list is overwhelmingly white because hollywood wont make movies about lesbians who are also poc. :(

wlw movies set in 1920-1950s:

The Handmaiden - (Dir. Park Chan-wook) Psychological erotic thriller set in Japanese occupied Korea following a Japanese heiress and her orphan pickpocket handmaiden. Loosely based off the book "Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters. My favorite description of it is "lesbian revenge thriller." (Rep: Japanese & Korean lesbians)

Carol - (dir. by Todd Haynes) Romantic drama set in 1952 NYC during the Christmas season. It follows an Carol Aird, an older soon to be divorcee woman and Therese Belivet, a young lady avoiding marriage. They meet in a toy store while Carol is searching for a gift for her daughter and become fast friends. (Rep: Bi white woman, queer white woman)

Heavenly Creatures - (dir. By Peter Jackson) psychological thriller set in New Zealand during 1952-1954 based off the real life Parker-Hulme murder case following 2 teenage girls with an all consuming obsession with each other and a fantasy world they create together. (Rep: 2 queer white women)

Colette - (dir. By Wash Westmoreland) Biographical drama set at the end of the 19th century following a depiction of author Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, ghost writer for her novelist husband, Willy. Sidonie had several affairs with other women and its shown in the movie. (Rep: Bi white woman)

Professor Marston & The Wonder Women - (dir by Angela Robinson) Biographical drama film set during the 1920s-1940s and following psychologist William Moulton Marston and the polyamorous relationship he had with 2 women that inspired the bisexual supehero Wonder Woman. (Rep: 2 white bi women)

Tell it to the Bees - (dir by Annabel Jankel) Set in rural Scotland in 1952 this romantic drama follows Dr. Jean Markham, the town's new doctor, and Lydia, a woman with a failing marriage and a young son who quickly takes an interest in her. (Rep: two queer white women)

Vita & Virginia - (dir by Chanya Button) Biographical romantic drama set in 1920s London exploring the relationship between two poet/novelist women, Vita Sackville-West and Virgina Woolf. (Rep: 2 queer white women)

A cisgender woman gets escorted out of the women’s bathroom by two policeman because she was wearing “masculine” clothing and didn’t have an ID to prove she was female and complying with the law. The policemen call her sir and refuse to let her simply go to the bathroom until she can prove she is truely female.

This backfire of transphobic legislation only shows that bathroom bills are not meant to protect anyone. They are meant to punish anyone who does not fit strictly within their deffinition of a man or a woman often leading to sexist generalizations and assumptions to judge who may or may not be “really” a woman.

Lo and behold, as a direct result of that sentiment: men barging into a women’s restroom and harassing a woman.

They literally caused the exact situation they claimed they were trying to prevent. God, the irony.
