“For years, July 4 was observed as Independence Day. But in 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal shifted the celebration to June 12—honoring the original declaration made by Filipinos, not the later one granted by a foreign power.”

It seems like there was a nationalistic and particularly anti-Spanish bent to this decision and I’m definitely not commenting on whether it was a good or bad decision. There’s also obviously nuance to the discussion that I simply don’t have the context to discuss. But speaking very factually, July 4 in the Philippines is celebrated as Republic Day, not Independence Day. Independence day is in June.

Frith’s Blessing was a followup

The Black Rabbit of Inlé was modeled after my first rabbit Hoshi and was an ode to the story when the titular prince of rabbits joins his ghostly owsla. Hoshi died of e.cuniculi which is a parasitic infection all rabbits carry until it presents itself as a head tilt and neurological issues. So it’s kind of fitting that the prince went there to save his people from disease. This was painted before he presented any symptoms and he was a king amongst rabbits.
