Long snippet from my fic!
Our intrepid Tenno went over to Adis' house for lunch and is gonna meet the cousins.
Another wave of lightning rolled overhead, giving me just a few moments to tuck my food back in its packet before the thunder made me jump. I grimaced a bit, that grimace turning into just a confused little frown as I saw the rock I’d leaned my bag on… jump. Adis noticed my noticing.
“Ah, one of the little ones!” he gasped, rising into the air, rounding me quickly. He picked up my bag, revealing that the rock wasn’t really… a rock. “Just a little-little one,” he cooed, “Probably first mim-ic…”
I stared at the tiny four-legged Sentient as it stood, little legs shivering. It was shaped a lot like an old earth insect, except its thorax looked remarkably like a rock… the rest of it… not so much.
It looked up at Adis, chirping and chittering, reaching out with its little grabby hands. He picked it up, hefting the little Sentient a bit. I had to admit, it was really kinda adorable…
It stared down at me with a pair of glowing teal eyes, little dollop of gold resting where its mouth probably was, looking a lot like a baby’s pacifier. It tilted its head at me. I tilted my head as well. It tilted the other way, and I copied. It lifted a fore-leg, and I lifted my arm. It squealed happily, rocking and squirming in Adis’ arms.
“She likes you,” he smiled. “Here, Adis tries something.” He lifted the little Sentient, resting her on top of my head…
She clung tight… happily chittering.
Adis laughed. “Really likes you.”
“Does she have a name?” I asked, not wanting to move my head much. I didn't want to accidentally shake her off.
“Most Neolysts don’t take name until grown…” he explained, looking back attention seemingly caught by something. “She youngest, will be years until old enough to take name…”
I jumped as the familiar droning laugh of Itzam smacked me someplace between the ears. “I see Merrin’s already fitting in with the little ones, a good sign, a good sign indeed.”
“Careful,” I mumbled, digging back into my lunch, “I can’t be adopted by everyone.”
“It’s a good sign, regardless, Merrin,” he chuckled. “Oh, good luck with hair, little one, it’s always proven a challenge.”
“Wh-?” I looked up slightly, seeing locks of muddy red hair that weren’t my own fluttering in the breeze. I had mine in a hair-tie, so that meant...
“Oh… a Mimic…” Adis had literally said that.
“Remnants of a time of war, now valuable and beloved members of our society,” Itzam rumbled. “May we move this inside? I rather fear being struck by lightning.”
“Let’s not go exploding now,” I mumbled, taking a quick bite before backing up. The little Mimic clung to my head the entire time, throwing off my balance a little bit.
“She’ll be formidable when she’s grown,” Itzam remarked, looking back at the three of us as he led us toward a nearby opening in the cliffside.
“That’s if she ever lets me go,” I sniffed, clutching my bag to my chest, spying the glowing eyes of the Sentient as they peered at us from their homes within the mountain.
Looks like it was time to meet the cousins.
