Sure, Iām screwing the boss now, I can afford it. But weāre taking your car.
Was I supposed to mental image that?Ā
[Rolls his eyes] Fine by me. Women don't know how to drive anyway.
This really blows⦠[Puts her glasses back on and stands up, grabbing his tie] Cāmon, I need a drinkā¦
You read my mind. But hands off the expensive fabric, Victoria. [Glares momentarily] Drinks on you?
[Removes her glasses to rub at her face] This blowsā¦
You can say that again.
nokickingnobiting replied to your post: What if I quit? I think Iām going to quit.
Are you surprised anymore?
I shouldnāt be but damnit, weāll run ourselves into the ground if we keep doing shit like this⦠Who the hell created that damn robot anyway?
I don't have a clue. I thought someone around here might.Ā
You think I should?Ā
Yes. For your own sake.Ā
Because it has to do with the Registration Act.
Run that by me again.
Iām not going to register, Harvey.
You're making a big mistake.
Because it has to do with the Registration Act.
Run that by me again.
Not at this very moment, Iām not, but Iām not hanging around until the end of the month when I will be.
Why does that date line up so perfectly with the deadline for the Registration Act?
I have a couple of low-end cases I need⦠done. [Taps his fingers on his desk] Iām going to be gone for a little while. [Rubs at the back of his neck awkwardly] Maybe a long while. Depending. But I canāt just drop these people.
Wait, what? Are you in some sort of trouble? I mean, I don't particularly mind doing you a favor but this seems...sudden.Ā
[Sets the bottle down between them and looks out over the lake] Do you ever get the feeling that youāre being royally screwed over somehow but youāre not sure why? Someone should have been watching Banner. Protocol would have someoneĀ watching BannerĀ if theyād thought he was a threat.Ā
And now heās gone. Not on the carrier, not in contact with us. Just gone. I donāt know whatās going on, but somethingās not right about this. Banner, the SHRA, Fury leaving.
[Laughs dryly] Plenty of times. And more often than not, intuition's right.Ā
[Nods] I kind of see where you're coming from. It all seems very suspicious.
[Clears his throat] Specter. I⦠need to ask you a favor.
Hm, okay. What is it?
[Rocks back in his office chair and dials Specterās number, fingertips tracing over the memorized numbers on his phone, the slightly raised ink telling Matt just what each button was labeled] ā¦
[Looks at the name on the screen before answering] Murdock?Ā
[Chuckles] Everyone loses. I hear Murdock is pretty good anyway. [Leans forward to sip from the bottle] Maybe we should have lost, really.
[Shrugs] He's alright. [Furrows brows] Why?
[Shrugs and leans back on her elbows] Everyone fucks up sometimes. Lawyers just have multi-million dollar fuck-ups. If it makes you feel better, SHIELD fucked up first.
But I never lose. I suppose there's a first time for everything. [Shakes head] It doesn't really make me feel better. But, thank you.
Matt wasnāt used to knowing someone in his daytime profession that he could speak to in this manner. It was oddly relaxing. For the first time in several months, Murdock found himself reclining comfortably in a chair and offering a lazy smile to a man he only barely knew outside the professional world. āYou? A young associate? Thatās something I have a hard time seeing. I bet you were the terror of mock trial,ā he teased.
The tap of heels on hardwood alerted Matt to the waitressā arrival and Murdock allowed Specter to order their drinks. Heād said he would, after all. The teasing little jibe pulled Mattās attention back to Harvey and he laughed. āDirtyās fine with me, Specter, as long as you can handle it too.ā
Harvey couldn't help but chuckle. "Yeah, it seems hard to believe but we all have to start somewhere, right?" Nonetheless, in retrospect, it surely seemed like his career had progressed rather quickly. That, of course, had only added padding to his ego. Nodding in agreement and with another small chuckle, he continued, "I sure was. Any associate would be lucky for me to show them just how to be the best."Ā
"You heard the man," Harvey directed his words to the waitress and she soon walked off to get their drinks. Harvey couldn't resist smiling. "Oh, I definitely can. But, I'm not sure that you can keep up with me," he teased.Ā
[Sits down] SHIELD has me on retainer. [Smiles] Iām Harvey Specter.
Specter, huh? Oh, yes. Our resident lawyer. [Chuckles and offers him the bottle] Iām sure youāre a busy man.
[Shrugs and takes a swig from the bottle] You could say that. It'd be better if I were a winning man.
[Jumps and glances back, quirking a brow] ā¦No view is too odd to accompany a bottle. [Shrugs]
Mind if I sit down?
If you want to. [Gestures at the spot on the grass beside her] You look familiar. Got a name?
[Sits down] SHIELD has me on retainer. [Smiles] I'm Harvey Specter.
