Communal Constellation.
I’ve been having two conversations that seemed to sync up interestingly.
In one, I’ve been talking about Build-A-Bear Workshop’s inability to decide whether or not they had any more Derpy figures in stock. One Brony honestly asked what the deal was about her, she was a background character with no back story. I explained that it was the communal fun of the fans making up a story for what was essentially an animation mistake. It’s the same thing that happened with Inspector Spacetime - the fans shared ideas, good ideas were accepted, weaker ones were cast out, and pretty quickly, a coherent history for the show appeared, all from about thirty seconds of footage.
In another conversation, talk of the “Paul is Dead” rumor arose, and someone posted this speech, where a game designer talked about the rumor as a communal cultural event, with people sharing “clues” through word of mouth, college newspapers and radio call-in shows. He called it “constellation”, the ability of the human mind to see patterns in random events.
He realized it was an amazing way to make games more interesting - let the players “find” stuff and make connections that you’d likely never thought of. With the Internet, “clues” would be shared at lightning speed, and these fan theories could drive interest in the games.
And I realized - that’s a PERFECT explanation of both Derpy and Inspector Spacetime. The fans took background throwaway details that had no meaning, and were either accidents or throwaway jokes, seeing connections, and creating something far more interesting. And one they had a far more personal attachment to, because they’d made it themselves.
“Paul is Dead” may be the first example of that “Communal Constellation” in popular culture.

To a larger degree, it’s that ability to find order in chaos that also brings us conspiracy theories, which have of course also gotten much more prevalent in the Internet age.
