You can get the ferry tp Sado Island. From Naoetsu, Sado Kisen operates 1-3 car ferries per day to Ogi on Sado Island. The one way journey takes 2.5 hours and costs 3,780 yen per person and about 20,000 yen for an average size car. Note that the ferry does not operate from late November through February (except for a few days over New Year). Discovered at Sado Island, Sado, Japan. See more at Trover
In the afternoon we took to the mountains to do a little snowshoeing which was fun. The weather cleared up and we got a great view of the area. Cost - JPY 3,000 per person Discovered at Sado Island, Sado, Japan. See more at Trover
We visited the small village of Ogi on Sado Island. Walking around the small village was interesting. Walkways are narrow and houses are very close together and small. You would have to get on with your neighbours well. There are only 50 people that live there now. Discovered at Ogi, Sado, Japan. See more at Trover

We visited the small village of Ogi on Sado Island. Walking around the small village was interesting. Their roofs are held down by rocks. In the late Heian and Muromachi periods, roofs were thin wooden shingles so owners would put stones on top to prevent the shingles from flying away in the wind. You can still see these roofs in the Ogi Town. Discovered at Ogi, Sado, Japan. See more at Trover

This is the coastline near Ogi Village, Sado Island. The coastline is gorgeous with fascinating volcanic rock and formations. Apparently, 200 years ago there was an earthquake and the rock formation rose from the ocean. We could have stayed and photographed so many different angles here. There were all kinds of crystal clear rock pools. The kind of spots that if they were in Australia, they'd go viral on Instagram! Discovered at Ogi, Sado, Japan. See more at Trover

Sado Island we went to the Sado Island Taiko Centre which is run by the Kodo Cultural Foundation. We all got in a circle and our instructor, Sami, started the lesson. She has been drumming for 20 years and travels the world performing with the group. They are world-famous (a French couple was there with us and had seen them in Paris, which made them travel to Sado just to meet them). We learnt about the drums and the different sounds and also what they are made of. There are two huge taiko drums that were hand-carved from an enormous 600-year-old keyaki (Japanese zelkova) log. Their names are Mr Potato and Miss Piggy. Cost - Drumming Lesson - JPY 1,600 person (1hr) Discovered at Taiko Experience Exchange Center, Sado, Japan. See more at Trover
