#That is growth
SHIELD had tried to set him up with therapy several times. After New York City, after losing Peggy, even while he was stationed in Star City. Steve never went to more than one session, though this time he thought he’d give it all another shot. He sat in the chair across Linda, nervously bouncing his leg as he looked around the room and gathered his thoughts. This was a safe space, SHIELD ensured that--- Steve didn’t have to worry about anyone else listening in on him.
“I feel---” he paused, “I feel like I’m getting older. I don’t feel as--- as agile, I guess.” Steve nodded. “Like everything’s finally catching up to me, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing,” he laughed nervously, “I mean, I’m a hundred years old now, I don’t think people are meant to live so long.”

“Hey, Pete, how you doing?” Steve smiled softly as the kid met him downtown that afternoon. The Avengers were slowly making their ways into the city--- so far he’d seen Banner and Stark, Natasha was around for a moment, and the only one he hadn’t been able to check up on was Peter. Steve couldn’t imagine how he must’ve felt in all this, sure he could fend for himself---- but he was still a kid. At least to Steve. “Hanging in there?”

Despite Bucky being caught, Steve still worked with the Institute to bring people to safety--- completely defying SHIELD’s orders not to get involved yet. But after Scott took a jab at him, Steve knew he couldn’t just sit around and do nothing. It wasn’t in his nature to do so. When he arrived that evening, he wandered into Emma’s office with a tired look on his face. He almost looked like he was finally aging now due to stress, he didn’t know how to feel about that fact.
“Got anything for me?” He asked her, standing in the doorway for a moment before slowly making his way to the middle of the room. “Not like I’m in a hurry or anything.”

Since he and Bucky started staying at the motel, Steve needed a new hobby to busy himself with. The cats were staying with an old neighbor so he couldn’t distract himself by playing with them. The channels on the motel TV weren’t the most exciting, so lazing around wasn’t exactly an option either. Out on a whim, he decided to buy a boat. It was old, and it didn’t work--- that was the point. Steve was going to take as long as possible to fix it up.
“I know, I know--- I’m not much of a water person but desperate times call for desperate measures.” Steve scoffed as he watched Namor approach.

He was used to getting in and out in a hurry. He’d lived on the run for months while Steve had tried to track him down the first time. So he changed, dumped his old clothes in the trash can, and splashed water on his face at the sink to try to get rid of some of the ash and whatever else the fire had left on him. He was marginally successful.
“They know who they were taking in. Not like I’m exactly anonymous.” And depending on how much trouble they wanted to make to get him back, it could be…problematic. Bucky glances up at the mirror, though he was looking at Steve’s reflection instead of his own. “Won’t take them long to show up at the apartment.” And saying so made him feel like he’d taken a punch to the gut.
“That’s why we can’t go back to the apartment...” Steve sighed. He knew it was inevitable that they’d be run out of their home, he was just surprised it had lasted as long as it did. “The lady underneath us is taking care of the cats--- once we’re settled somewhere else, I’ll go back and get them.” Steve assured. They deserved a far better home than wherever the boys were about to end up.
He ran his fingers back through his hair before adjusting the hat onto his head. “There’s a motel outside the city, SHIELD took care of the expenses--- we’re staying there for a few days and then moving into an apartment on the other side of town. They’re more pro-ban over there but if we can blend in, we should be fine.” Steve wrapped his arms around himself as he looked at Bucky in the mirror, “We’ll be okay.”

He had been planning to just go along with things until he figured out exactly what that might mean. It seemed pretty damn unlikely that it would just be a normal arrest, that all he’d do was go sit in a cell for awhile until he got hold of Matt. But he’d been willing to give it a shot. Not fight his way out.
Someone else had other ideas. Someone being Steve, because of course it was. He took two long steps back once his guards were occupied, already twisting the metal arm to try to break himself out of the cuffs.
“You know, I was trying not to make a scene,” he muttered. One of the men on the ground started to stir again. Bucky’s boot connected with the side of his head and put a quick end to that.
“And where’s the fun in that?” Steve said with a small smirk, glancing around the truck as reinforcements made their way over to the commotion. “Seriously, let’s go.” He grabbed Bucky by the wrist, dragging him away from the prison the exact way he had entered. Thankfully Bucky had barely arrived when Steve got there, inside was definitely loaded with more security than the outside.
Once they made it away from the prison, Steve dragged Bucky into an old gas station bathroom and shoved a change of clothes at him. “To make you a little less obvious.” he teased, looking him over to check for any injuries. It’d all been too easy to get him back, which could only mean the guards were prepared to come back into the city in search of both of them. They had to leave as soon as possible, at least until it mostly blowed over.
We lost friends. We lost family. We lost a part of ourselves.
We have no choice. So we fight – and we win. There are no other options.
The night that the fires blazed through the city, Steve was busy at the institute making sure no one got in, or even out. It was easier for him to remain unrecognized by the NOVA agents who made a poor attempt to swarm the place. Steve stayed in the shadows, and wore a mask to hide his face to make sure he wasn’t going to get himself arrested. Once things began to quiet down, his phone rang. It was Maria and she’d just given him orders to do whatever it took to get Bucky out of NOVA’s hands.
As soon as Steve got a location, he moved out on his own to the prison where several NOVA trucks full of prisoners were pulling in. Steve only had orders to get Bucky, he had to remain hidden in order to avoid giving anyone else an unfortunate sense of false hope.
He laid eyes on Bucky being forced out of a truck and made his move. Steve landed on top of the truck, shielding himself from a round of bullets before jumping down to silently take on the group of agents holding Bucky prisoner. Once the three of them were knocked to the ground, Steve looked back at Bucky and huffed out a deep breath, “We gotta get you out of here...”

“My boots are clean…ish.” He kept them on the ground, but not without giving Steve a look that very clearly conveyed that he was just indulging him. “The apartment seems pretty happy to me.” Then again, a damn cemetery might have seemed jolly after the places he’d seen.
He leaned back far enough for his head to be against Steve’s arm. “Saw Foggy not long ago. I think I’ve found the next people for us to move to Scott’s side of the line.” So maybe just sitting there and being bored wasn’t as easy as he wanted it to be. Bucky pressed his lips together and looked up at the ceiling. He needed some kind of…distraction.Â
“Exactly, ish.” Steve looked at him pointedly, though a smile slowly crept onto his lips. “Oh, definitely. But I don’t think it has to do with it being clean.” He leaned in to press a gentle kiss to Bucky’s lips, smiling against him before pulling back. “Might be the people in it instead.” Steve nodded.
“You’re playing the game.” He said with a grin, “Tell me what the right move to make is and I’ll help you, Buck.” Steve was more than happy to follow Bucky’s lead on something. It took the pressure off him, but he also liked watching the way Bucky worked and thought. Their processes were similar, but not so similar that Steve knew his every move, Bucky kept him on his toes. “Maybe that can all wait until tomorrow though...” Steve whispered.

Billy honestly hadn’t been doing too much in the way of heroism that evening. Instead, he was spending more time watching the agents - trying to see if there was anything that could be gained from doing so. He had come to the rooftop to try another vantage point when Steve spoke up and made him jump. “Oh, God, give a guy a heart attack why don’t you?” Billy stated and let out a deep breath. “I’m not doing anything. Watching. Observing. That kind of thing.” He shrugged his shoulders.Â
“Watching and observing can come bright and early tomorrow, you should get back home.” Steve hadn’t seen Wanda in what felt like ages, but Steve promised her he’d keep an eye on her boys. At this point, there wasn’t anyone in the city Steve didn’t have an eye on. “I know it’s just watching and observing to you, but they’re not going to think so, Bill. Come on, I’ll take you home.”

The sound of her name made her blood run cold. Betty froze, the rush of adrenaline standing the hairs on the back of her neck on end. A prickly numbness worked its way into her arms and fingertips as she realized - not soon enough - that this person wasn’t a threat.Â
Her fear and then sudden shock was dizzying in its combination. She took off her sunglasses and folded them, nodding. “Yeah,” she said softly, offering her hand. “You have?” The thought of Captain America listening to her podcasts was definitely going to trip her up in the future. Betty wasn’t the sort to be starstruck, but there were a handful of well known figures that were capable of rendering her speechless.
“Yeah, I try to keep pretty up to date with everything happening. Believe me, the reports from journalists have been far more help than listening in on the police radios.” Steve attempted a small laugh. He shook her hand, “I’m Steve, by the way.” He was working out on the streets at night as Nomad and if he was going to get an inkling of how NOVA wanted to work, Steve had to do as much reading and watching as possible. Reporters like Betty were just as important in all this as anyone else.

“I wouldn’t say he’s under control like others have stated, but quiet, yes. Quiet is how he’s been doing. At least, I assume so. I never actually know when he comes out until I wake up in a heap of destruction.” Bruce shrugged. “I didn’t know you were living with Bucky – I can call him that, right? I met him the other day after you’d gone and I fell asleep on your couch after that scotch we had. Remind me to never drink two glasses again.”
“Good for you, Bruce.” Steve gave him a small, thoughtful smile. “Oh--- uh yeah. I got stationed here for some work and Bucky wasn’t too far behind me so we just... yeah, we’ve been living here. It was pretty quiet and boring for a while but it’s started to pick up lately.” he shook his head, he actually preferred the quiet and wished he hadn’t complained so much. “You drank with Bucky?” Steve chuckled, “Oh man, even I have a hard time keeping up.”Â
lilstrlrd·:
“Yeah,” Peter replied with a familiar head nod. His smile was faint; their first meeting didn’t go that well, but he was glad the guy remembered him. A faint chuckle escaped him at Steve’s joke and shrugged. “Adjusting fine. I room with a really great friend, I have a job…” Just no Guardians. That was the one thing he was missing right now and it pained him to think of them, but there really wasn’t a lot he could do about that. Peter scoffed, “Dude, it’s cool. This place going to crap just reminds me of the lawlessness of space. It’s familiar. Not that I like it, just.” He shrugged. “Why would it be an act? D’you think the government would have somethin’ to do with that?”
“I don’t know how it is up in space and all, but here they try to paint us in the worst light possible.” Steve let out a sigh. Ever since the Avengers tore apart New York, heroes hadn’t been in good standing with the government. Steve couldn’t help but think it was his fault--- but he wouldn’t have torn apart New York on his own. There were aliens invading and the team did what they needed to protect the people who couldn’t protect themselves. Not one part of him regretted what he’d done. “I assume you didn’t follow the rules much up there then?” Steve’s brow raised.

Matt pushed his hands into his pockets, the collar of his shirt unbuttoned from around his throat, looking more disheveled than he had since college. Matt had been working overtime, and with everything going on, he was constantly looking over his shoulder. He couldn’t afford not to. He was sure that Steve felt something similar—perhaps the only difference was that Steve was already well known. Matt’s identity was still obfuscated. He pressed his lips together for a moment, tilting his head.Â
“We don’t have a lot of glory days to talk about,” he pointed out. Despite the fact that Matt knew Steve well, he only really got to know him during Bucky’s trial, not as Daredevil. Matt had always been a lone wolf. “What would you want to do instead?”
Steve didn’t have just one person looking over his shoulder, he had the entirety of SHIELD and the United States’ Government. If Steve got caught helping people to the institute, after curfew no less, SHIELD’s hands were tied and they couldn’t help him out of it. Steve would be entirely on his own and in the hands of people who wanted nothing more than to make him their weapon. The government wanted to control Captain America ever since he came out of the ice.
“That’s what I thought.” Steve said with a nod. “So what is it? I’ve been running low on time these days.” He let out a small sigh. He was 100 years old and he felt like his time was wearing very thin. There hadn’t been a point where Steve felt like it could all end, and he was coming very close to getting there these days.
