What I still can't get over is that Ellie draws an owl in her diary above the words "All the promises at sundown, I meant them like the rest." because that's what she remembers from their last conversation—Joel, drinking coffee from his favorite owl mug. She remembered this little detail because it was so comforting to talk to him about casual things again. They used to do that a lot before they drifted apart. She missed it so much, whether she liked to admit it to herself or not. The conversation meant so much to her that she wouldn't forget about him talking to her about something as insignificant as coffee.

Then later, when she goes in his closet, she purposefully searches for one specific jacket before burying her face in it and remembering him—the jacket he's been wearing the night all her promises to him were meant like the rest. 

She needed to be reminded of the last time she stood next to him, wishing she would have hugged him right there and then.

Also, doesn't it look like she's been crying all over that page?
