“Then dumb is the new sexy.” Peeta was just joking around, mostly. He laughed again, adjusting the frame of the shades on his features. “Twenty bucks well spent.”
“You spent twenty bucks on that crap? Seriously?” A chuckle, his head shaking. “You’re something else.”
Ezra
❛So we should just tell him that that’s what’s really happening between us, because as far as I know, he just thinks we’re roomies and good friends.❜ He leans forward and places the joint casually back behind Dean’s ear.
“Yeah, I guess. Just, I’m...I’m nervous.” Terrified would be a more accurate adjective, really. It’s not that he thinks Retto won’t accept it. No, he knows different to that. He’s just never really had to say it out loud to anyone but Ezra.
Peeta
”Oh come on, don’t be stupid. I look great.” Peeta was still grinning, refusing to believe the other.
“I’m not being stupid. You look really dumb.” Dean can’t help but be amused by it though. When the hell did he get such a silly roommate?

“You’re very nice, Ezra. Not like that other boy Dean was supposed to have moved in with at the start of the year. Alfie, was it? Something like that.”

❛I mean–‘❜ He sighs, reaches out and plucks the joint from behind Dean’s ear. ❛He doesn’t know that we’re – you know. Together. Making out on a regular basis.❜ And then he takes a drag.
“Oh right. That.” He chews on his lip and then shrugs. “I don’t-- I mean he’s gay so it’s not-- and it’s not like we hide it on Twitter or anything I don’t really...”

“It’s fine. This wouldn’t be a problem if I’d answered my phone. Or had a phone to answer.”

“What we really are?” He seems genuinely confused. Then again, there’s a lit joint behind his ear that’s signalling his slightly slowed brain power.

Ezra:
❛You’re not scaring me,❜ replies Ezra, smile still accompanying his words. ❛I have a younger brother myself, so I understand it. I care about him a lot. Both of you are lucky, to have each other as brothers.❜
“Okay, good. And I’m sure your brother’s just as lucky to have you. You seem like a great guy.” And he wholeheartedly means that, too. “Are we far from your dorms? I have been walking all day.”
Ezra:
Ezra looks at Retto, his gaze conveying more than words really could at the moment. He nods, and glances away from him; he could always tell that their parents were bad, in different ways to his own, and he wouldn’t wish that on anyone. ❛I know he is,❜ he says, when he looks at the other again. ❛Believe me. I know how great he is, and I know he’s come from bad things. I admire him a lot.❜
He smiles suddenly then. “Good. I’m not trying to scare you off or anything and I’m not trying to be a scary person. But...do you have any siblings?” He couldn’t think of anything else to say, can’t think of how else to convey how he feels about Dean.
Ezra:
❛I’ve never been glad to be wrong before, but I think I am,❜ responds the artist, eyes shining. Surely, any fool could see how high an opinion he has of Dean, with the way he’s talking about him now. ❛He sounds like the best brother ever, and that doesn’t surprise me.❜
He sighs and then stops Ezra. He pauses to clean his glasses on his shirt before he pushes them back onto his face. He squints a little, double checking they are, in fact, clean before he gives a flicker of a smile. “My parents, without divulging too much information, are God awful people. Dean is--” He stops, squinting again, in thought this time. “Dean is the best of a bad situation. The best. And I hope you realise that.”
Ezra:
❛He’s changed a bit, lately,❜ Ezra divulges, ❛in a good way. I feel like he’s accepting himself more, and it’s making him a little less closed off. College is good for people like that. I used to be shy and lonely, and now I’m – happy.❜
The sudden seriousness takes him by surprise, has him blinking in startled fascination. “I know,” he says softly. “You know, I wouldn’t be out if it wasn’t for him. He kept encouraging me to do what makes me happy - pursue a music career and find a boyfriend and change my name. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re wrong. Sounds to me like he’s the same old Dean.”
