Here is a photo essay on why you should spend the last 18 days of the hiatus watching the absolutely wonderful show that is Queen of the South
1) An absolutely badass female POC protagonist
Teresa was a money trader in the streets of Mexico when she was 15. By 16 she was in charge of her whole block. When the cartel kills her boyfriend, what does she do? She grabs a gun and goes on the run. When she gets kidnapped by a rival cartel and faces being forced into prostitution, what does she do? She puts her own life at risk to volunteer as a drug mule, knowing she’ll be treated better. But is that enough? Fuck no. Why stop at running drugs when she can take over the entire cartel and become its filthy rich leader?
2) An absolutely soft, hardass MOC protagonist who doesn’t care about anyone or anything… except for his woman
Okay so maybe it’s not canon yet, but look at these two! James is #2 in charge of the cartel, and this girl walks in and suddenly he’s not so emotionally withdrawn anymore? There’s nothing special about her, she’s just like every other mule or pro they have hostage, but damn if he does’t fall for her. Hard. He’s screaming about her risking her life and being stupid about it hours after he meets her, and that’s what I’m here for. Let this man’s softness heal your poor broken Bellarke souls. (and he’s hot as fuck when he swears or points a gun, so that’s a thing)
3) Comedic relief in the form of this incredible Latina
That’s right. This queen is way more badass here than on One Day At A Time though. How many of your friends would immigrate illegally to America after cartel hitmen killed their husbands and pick up two thugs to sell coke out of a motel room to make money to survive on? Brenda is a boss and I love her.
4) The most incredible Latina antagonist that you probably don’t like but have to love because she’s such a feminist icon
This woman right here realizes that her husband, head of the Vargas cartel that she created, is an absolute douche, so she packs up and moves to Texas where she tells him she wants to start a new chapter of the cartel. Instead, this boss ass bitch starts dealing behind his back, getting twice as much coke as he’s allowed her by starting deals with Columbians, creating her own networks and connections and ultimately undermining him by turning his own lieutenants against him. Oh, and when he offers her the choice between divorcing him or going to war, she puts on her sunglasses, looks at him, and says “war it is, then” before strutting away.
5) And just all the Bellarke feels J.Roth never gave us
Seriously though, this fandom has like… 5 people in it… and about 80% of them are Blarkes. There’s only 1 Jeresa fic on AO3. This show needs more love.
