“I’m naturally made to like people with similar personalities to me.” — Min Yoongi
“I love calm people. The ones choosing their words wisely, never raising their voice. Not living to show off, but to exist in a quiet and harmonic way, trying to at least not harm anyone. I find those people inspiring.” 💜

“Music is still part of my life, but I hate the idea of people coming to see me play the guitar because they’ve seen me in movies. You want people who are listening to be only interested in the music.” — Johnny Depp

Severance Hospital-BTS Sugar establishes 'Min Yoongi Treatment Center'
Sugar donates 5 billion won to support autism spectrum disorder pediatric treatment and self-reliance
[NEWS] Severance Hospital and BTS Sugar (real name Min Yoon-gi) will establish a specialized treatment center to support the treatment of patients with autism spectrum disorder and social independence.
On the 23rd, Severans Hospital held the opening ceremony of the 'Min Yoongi Treatment Center' for the treatment of pediatric adolescents with autism spectrum disorder on the first floor of Jejung Hall. Here, we plan to support the mental health of children and adolescents such as language, psychological, and behavioral therapy, and operate various programs that link clinical and research.
It is said that Sugar has brought continuous interest in mental health, psychological and behavioral problems, especially youth depression, along with steady sharing activities during BTS activities. He has been looking for ways to help through his talent and ability in music.
In November last year, Sugar communicated with Professor Cheon Geun-ah of the Department of Pediatric Psychiatry at Severance Hospital, who is an authority in the field of pediatric psychiatry. After several meetings, I learned that patients with autism spectrum disorder need customized treatment that suits their life cycle, but it is difficult to achieve with existing short-term therapeutic interventions. In addition, in order to make positive changes in the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, it is necessary to establish a specialized treatment center that can support treatment in the medium and long term for more than 10 years, and expressed his intention to donate 5 billion won to Severans Hospital. It is the highest amount ever in terms of donations from artists, including Severance Children's Hospital and the entire Yonsei Medical Center.
After that, Professor Cheon and Sugar discussed the establishment of a treatment center from the end of last year to the beginning of this year and social training using music for children with autism spectrum disorder. Based on this, we developed the 'MIND' program, a social group program that incorporates musical content into the existing social training program.
The MIND program is an abbreviation that implies the meaning of 'increase interaction and sensory experience (Music) through music, encounter opportunities to form social relationships (Interaction), learn the process of naturally forming relationships (Network) through the community, respect individual diversity and learn a society (Diversity) that fits together'. Children who participate in this program play musical instruments, sing songs, write according to the music, and express their feelings and thoughts through music and writing.
Sugar took advantage of the weekend from March to June this year to meet real children with autism spectrum disorder and participated in the program development. By playing instruments such as guitars directly, children were induced to match rhythms and chords, interact through music, and expand their emotional expression. Furthermore, he taught children to play musical instruments themselves.
As the program progressed, children's emotions and language expression increased significantly, and social skills were trained in the process of cooperating with or waiting with other children. Oh-gun (10 years old) and Lee-gun (12 years old), who did not show a positive response when receiving speech therapy, showed a talent to choose the instrument by themselves and play the beat.
Various emotional expressions were revealed during the ensemble. Kim-gun (18 years old), who sung the saxophone, had little language and emotional expression, but he expressed his emotions in the process of collaborating with other children, and reacted to the therapist's interest and praise.
Through this program, it has confirmed the effect of helping children with autism spectrum disorder with limited language ability to form social relationships.
In the future, Min Yoon-ki Treatment Center will advance the MIND program and build a self-reliance music project model. For the continuous operation of the program, the training process of experts in each treatment field will also be systematized to strengthen the continuity and professionalism of the program.
When the construction of Min Yoon-ki Treatment Center is completed in September, regular program sessions will be expanded and newly established. It operates various treatment sessions from social training using music for patients with autism spectrum disorder and people with developmental disabilities. ABA (applied behavior analysis) and speech therapy, which have been carried out in the past, will also be expanded. In addition, clinical research, academic paper presentation, and program manual publication are also promoted to objectively prove the effectiveness of the MIND program.
Professor Cheon Geun-ah said, "Instead of financial support, I sincerely thank Sugar for his sincere talent donation and volunteer work over the past months. I was deeply impressed by Mr. Sugar's sincerity, who always showed a serious and intelligent attitude," he said, "The ultimate goal of the Min Yoongi Treatment Center and the MIND program is to enable children with autism spectrum disorder to grow into independent beings and healthy social people through the medium of music, and to resolve prejudice against autism spectrum disorder patients and improve disability awareness."
Sugar said, "Through the preparation and volunteer activities with Professor Cheon Geun-ah for the past 7 months, I deeply felt that music can be a valuable channel to express our feelings and communicate with the world." "It was a great gratitude and happiness to be able to be with children with autism spectrum disorder in the treatment process, and I will continue to contribute to more children so that they can be part of our society."
