Adam Granduciel of The War On Drugs for Mojo Magazine by Janelle Barone.
We are the luckiest brothers on Earth. We are unworthy of such splendor, undeserving of such radiance. — Uh, that’s right. We should have… ugly girls.
Addams Family Values (1993) dir. Barry Sonnenfeld

meaningful and deep relationships require difficult conversations. often unpleasant conversations about how we can improve and how we can be better friends, siblings or partners to the people around us. special bonds aren’t entirely made of good moments, but the moments that were hard and yet you still made it through because you care about the other person.

Pleaese god I am begging you
stop supporting disney
they are not good
nostalgia has you in a death grip
Didn’t they already try something like this and now there’s just lots of empty houses sitting around because it flopped
Yes it sucks SO bad bc they have to deforest/strip clear marsh land and then the thing fails and the damage is done and the aquifer is fucked and the entire area is up to 15 degrees hotter all bc some Disney-infatuated rich dweebs bought in to the concept
Like even if it implodes it would be such a loss for the environment
Fkn jimmy buffet did that shit down here too there’s an entire *actual margaritaville* down here they’re clear cutting forests and filling in marshes on it as we speak
I need capitalism to die like yesterday we need moratoriums on new developments SO badly
florida had panthers. panthers are native to florida. we could have panthers instead of this shit.
ZOE KRAVITZ in HIGH FIDELITY (2020)
One of my favorite songs and one of my favorite paintings. When I listen to You In January while in an emotionally open mood, I feel as though I’m full of ambient love, filling each room I walk in with a thousand tiny stars.
And the intro of the song, while obviously positive in a loving way, always felt slightly melancholy to me. After all, there is melancholy in that level of tenderness. In feeling so taken aback by how much you love and adore somebody. It’s affecting, and I feel like it requires a deep well of emotional experience to really *feel* that strongly.
The painting represents a lot of that to me. There is slight melancholy in the loneliness of the scene – in all of the cool, blue colors – but a comfortable melancholy; a couple having the world to themselves. And each of the brush strokes that make up the sky equally feel like the thousand tiny stars I have felt and like snow or rain, with all the ambient light reflecting off of it. Two beautiful pieces of art, together representing an impactful scene in my heart.
wish my life was like a 90's movie where all my friends work in record stores and bookshops and coffee shops and we see really cool bands in small little clubs and get breakfast together and like hang out on roofs and shit

I know the answer, but why are Hallmark holiday movies…like that?
The plot is always meant to be escapism, but the female protags never *want* to escape- they’re Type A ladies who worked hard to get where they are and have had the dream of success in business since the beginning. You sort of get the sense that they’re extroverted and like urban living. They have friend groups, apartments, and all that. Yes, the movie does tell you that they’re stressed, but they really seem to like their lives outside of that.
When they do inevitably get sent to Xmas-ville for their assignment, the guy they meet is almost never nice at first. He makes fun of her for not knowing how farm equipment works. He calls her ‘city girl’ and implies her journalism degree is stupid. He takes joy in making her do unpleasant tasks to ‘humble’ her.
Even when they warm up to each other, he still doesn’t like her very much- the worst example I’ve seen was the lady being an artist, *finally* getting her first gallery showing, and wanting to catch a flight to go see it…and the guy didn’t want her to go, because who’d look after his toddler who loved her so much? She wasn’t even *moving*, just taking a short trip to Seattle or wherever.
I know people say these films are Chick Flicks, but they really don’t seem to cater to a female perspective at all. Most of us don’t work High Profile jobs, and we certainly wouldn’t want a guy who made fun of us for it if we did.
All I’m saying is- Cinderella wouldn’t be Cinderella if she enjoyed working from home, and Prince Charming made it a point to jokingly call her an Old Maid.
[stage whisper] it’s conservative Christian wish-fulfillment
I know a lot of ladies who like these movies and they tend to be rural, Christian women who married early, had kids quick, and whose priorities are the family, maybe the church, and not much else (not saying there’s anything wrong with that). These movies, imo, are targeted to them. They say, YOUR life is the most fulfilling life. All those women you went to high school with who went to college and work high profile jobs in Seattle who you never see outside of Christmas cards anymore? They’re all secretly miserable. If they came to a town like yours and experienced a Good Man (ymmv) and Family and Small Town Charm, they would realize that you were OBJECTIVELY correct all along, and that they really want YOUR perfect life.
THE HOLIDAY 2006 │ dir. by Nancy Meyers
“How can I explain to you, my happiness, my golden wonderful happiness, how much I am all yours — with all my memories, poems, outbursts, inner whirlwinds? Or explain that I cannot write a word without hearing how you will pronounce it — and can’t recall a single trifle I’ve lived through without regret — so sharp! — that we haven’t lived through it together — whether it’s the most, the most personal, intransmissible — or only some sunset or other at the bend of a road — you see what I mean, my happiness?”
— Vladimir Nabokov, in a letter to Véra Nabokov, Letters to Véra, ed. and trans. Olga Voronina and Brian Boyd (Alfred A. Knopf, 2014)
