While snakes can sit still a very long time, this is some kind of hair algae (not moss!) many species of which grow in n fast moving streams, so the snake could have been fairly active and still grow an algae coat, which it will lose next time it sheds or if environmental conditions (like seasonal temps) change too much for this algae's liking :)

Hey! Have you ever mailed a letter to Santa Claus? Have you ever wondered what exactly happened to that letter? Well wonder no longer! If it had a stamp and a return address, then odds are that it ended up on the USPS's Operation Santa page!

Every year, the USPS collects letters to Santa Claus, and processes them to black out any identifying information. Last names, addresses, things like that. Then, the letters are posted on the Operation Santa webpage and people can adopt the letters.

Once you adopt a letter, you can buy gifts for them, wrap them up, and package them. Then you get a barcode from the website, and bring them to a post office. The clerk there will scan the barcode, which prints out a label with the address on it, and sends out the gift.

It's anonymous on both ends, and is generally just. A really nice thing to do.

I highly recommend it if you have some money to spare this year and want to give a kid a moment of magic this year

It's one of those things that the post office just happened to be positioned to do, and ended up knocking it out of the park. Unfortunately, I don't think they advertise this nearly well enough, and most letters end up going unanswered

But you can take care of yourself. Eat breakfast, drink water, take a long shower, put on clean clothes/favorite clothes. Checking in on the politics as needed, rather than wallowing in them all day. Put on a comfort movie or show, and watch that for a while. Focus on your job if you have to be there today. Reach out if you need help.

You can also check in on your friends- making sure they have eaten and had water and showered and have something comforting. Reach out if they might need help. The only way out of this is through, and we need each other to get there.

We will have a long fight ahead of us for the next 4 years. We would have had a long fight ahead of us regardless of who won; only the kind of fight would have been different. This is the fight we have: survival and damage control. Not the fight we wanted, but it is what it is, and we're still going to use tooth and nail.

Today is Day 1.

Today is checking with your clerk's office, if you mailed your ballot, to ensure your ballot got counted. Today is weathering the despair. Today is taking care of yourself and checking on your loved ones to make sure they have what they need to weather Day 1 with you.

Tomorrow is resolving to vote in the next local elections to aid in damage control, and planning the next steps.

No matter who wins, we will need community organizing to survive. We need to fight for more affordable and walkable neighborhoods. You should attend neighborhood meetings if you are able. If nothing else just talk to your neighbors and get to know them. Community is key to us getting through it all alive.

Voting is important but you have so much more power and capability to create change beyond the ballot box. Whether it's fighting for bike lanes and transit, supporting affordable housing, joining a canvassing group, attending community gatherings and input meetings, answering surveys put out by local government, protesting injustices in your community, volunteering to help homeless people or any number of other things. You have to be involved in community because that is what gets us through things and you have to pay attention to local government because that is where real change is possible to achieve
