“You don’t want to see my dancing. I’d rather sit at the bar and do the drinking thing.” Nora didn’t dance, not around people at least. She didn’t find it fun, but rather embarassing.

Glancing at the Cartier around her wrist, Ren contemplated cancelling her meeting later that day, but decided against the risk. “I have a meeting at 11, so if I come back at 10, I need to be out by quarter-to, no later.” It was rather frustrating that in such a small town, there was only one commendable hair salon, even though the streets were dotted with several barbers. “Is that possible?”

“That definitely sounds doable.” Putting on the colour wouldn’t take too long, it was allowing the colour to set that would take time. And then washing it out, and then drying the hair. It could be done in the forty-five minutes, if she was quick with applying the colour, and used a good blow dryer. “I’ll book you in for 10. Can I just get your name and phone number?”

Two hours. Ren had gotten up specifically early that day so that she’d have the time to do her hair before the few meetings that had been scheduled, not to mention the classes that she’d consider attending. Her eyes hardened, showing irritation at the situation, however, her words remained passive. “How long will it take for you to do?”

Nora knew this type of client well enough. There was a reason there was no ‘walk-ins welcome’ sign on the door. Most of their days were fully booked, save the occasional spot. “If it’s just the colour, no cut, I can have you out of here in about forty-five minutes probably,” she answered after looking over the amount of grow-in and the colour and thickness of the hair. “An hour tops.”

The current state of her hair was enough to make Marnie want to wince. Whilst not particularly caring if she looked pretty or not, Marnie was of the belief that a person should always be clean cut and finished nicely. Sloth was the sin that she despised and that extended to a slovenly appearance. Pushing open the door she headed into the salon, closing the door softly behind her. “Sorry, Nora. I thought I’d stop in before work.” Marnie gestured towards her head. “Any chance I could have an appointment for this evening. As you can see, I’ve got the split ends from hell and my roots are starting to show. I’m in dire need of help.”

A glance towards the blonde was all she needed. She could never allow her friend to walk around looking like that. Especially when a lot of business rode on the word of mouth, and if one client had a bad style, they all might as well have bad styles. “Yeah, let me just check. I need about two hours for that, but I don’t mind staying extra for you.” A few clicks on the computer, and she was booking her in. “Be here for six.” The time the colour was setting would give Nora time to have something quick to eat before finishing the cut. “And if you’re feeling like a nice person, you can bring a cup of coffee.”

“Sorry, sorry, but you probably understand busy schedule better than anyone else,” he told her. He did pity the woman a bit, it could not have been a picnic to hang out in the room for several days with the blow dryers on and whatever gadgets one had for hairdressing. “But I’m gonna be your knight in a shining armor today, you’ll have the room’s temperature in 60 in no time.” He set his tools on the floor and couldn’t help but trying the on/off switch. As it seemed the solution was not that simple he sighed and pulled his screwdriver. “How have you survived here without AC?”

“A good setting spray,” she answered as sincerely as she could, while still trying to make a joke. The past few days had been hard to get through, keeping the door open and few windows that opened as wide as they went. As well, she had brought in some fans, but they cluttered more than they cooled. “Do you know how long this might take, or even what’s wrong?”

“it really surprises me how stupid people can be,” rowan muttered and indicated to the arguing couple near him. he shook his head and took a sip of his coffee, something he had started drinking once early mornings became abundant once again. “who starts dating if you’re just going to argue about…” he paused to eavesdrop a bit more. “the colour of your table cloth? i’m officially out of logic.”

“Maybe it’s a form of foreplay for them.” Nora let out a small grin as she brought her drink to her lips. “Some people enjoy the act of arguing, you know.” It wasn’t nice to listen to other people’s conversations, and he didn’t know what those two people were going through. Although, it was a little amusing to watch others argue, and she rarely had the chance to comment on it.

With his work clothes on and hair tied into a small bun at the nape of neck. He shook his head. “No, I came here to fix the AC here. Or I think I am. Not sure if this is the right place, these smalls shops are a mystery to me with the numbers.”

A sigh of relief. “Oh, finally. I’ve been waiting for what seems like forever.” A few days was long enough without any air conditioning. Once the sun was shining, the shop was full, and hair dryers were going at full blast it could get hot in there. “The AC is towards the back, I’ll show you to it in a second.”

Restless fingers scrunched the hair at the base of her neck, as her other hand pushed the door open. Being much too early in the morning, Ren’s eyes blankly disregarded the ‘closed’ sign on the front window, prohibiting her mind to process what it had said. Only when the other spoke did her eyes narrow in slight confusion, her mind still evidently blurred, as her head turned back to face the sign she’d passed. “Oh, the door was unlocked and the lights were on, I just assumed ––” her voice trailing off with the shake of her head. “Yeah, when’s your next availability? I just need a touch up for my roots.”

“One moment, I’m just booting up the computer and then I’ll be able to check the appointment book.” She was never much of a morning person, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t try. Especially with a potential client. She hadn’t even consumed a full pot of coffee yet. “It looks like I have a spot in two hours?” Her eyes scanned the rest of the schedule. “But other than that I’m booked for the day. I could look at tomorrow if you want?”

it’s too early, and lydia walks to the one café that’s open already. she can’t sleep, and she finds the house she has to live in abhorrent. she’d rather be away from it than stay. it reminds her of her aunt’s house, and that just makes her uncomfortable. she misses her own apartment, where she was at least safe. but lydia figures it’s better to be uncomfortable and safe than happy and soon-to-be-dead.

uncomfortable and suffering of insomnia, lydia thinks. she is currently on her second cup of coffee, still sitting in the same café. there’s a book in front of her, but she hasn’t been paying attention to it for the past three minutes. that’s simply because approximately three minutes ago she closed her eyes, using her arm as a pillow.

“what? no, i’m not sleeping. i’m just – resting my eyes.”

Something resembling a snort escaped Nora. “Complete with drooling?” Okay, maybe she was exaggerating, but it didn’t look like the other girl had been just resting her eyes. Not that it was any of her business anyway. 

She had stopped by the café to grab a cappuccino before opening shop. It was something she indulged herself in everyone in a while. A quick pick-me-up that was better tasting than anything homebrewed. 

“That’s usually what a bed is for.”

Nora unlocked the door to her hair salon and flicked on the lights. A quick glance around the shop showed a few styling chairs and mirrors against one wall, sinks against the other. She slipped behind the desk, placing her coffee down to turn on the computer.

With the sound of the front door opening, she glanced up. “Hello. We’re not quite open yet, were you wanting to make an appointment?”
