As his former bandmates make big waves in the music world, it's clear that one-time One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson is ready to be a star in his own right as well.

Yesterday, Louis Tomlinson, one of the five original One Direction members, finally released his first solo single, officially kicking off what could be an exciting and somewhat unexpected second leg to his already impressive career.

The former boy band member teamed up with electronic dance producer and label boss Steve Aoki for the powerful tune “Just Hold On,“ which sees him going in a new direction that many wouldn’t have anticipated from Tomlinson. The pairing took to the stage on The X Factor UK to debut the track live, bringing EDM to a television program which is more accustomed to pure pop and the classics. The showing went off without a hitch, and though Tomlinson’s vocals seemed somewhat thin when separated from the group, the song is catchy, high-energy, and the singer seemed happy to be performing.

The single’s title is fitting for the pop star at the moment, who sadly lost his mother just a few days ago to cancer at the young age of 43. The tragic events of the past week or so seem to give power to “Just Hold On,” and it’s clear that Tomlinson truly believes what he is singing, which makes the first-time solo offering that much more meaningful to the former boy band member. After the song was finished, they were met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the judges, and those watching at home got to see a rare moment of Simon Cowell bestowing only the nicest of platitudes upon Tomlinson, commenting that he was certain the singer’s mother was proud.

It’s still early days for Tomlinson’s solo musical career, and there is no telling how far “Just Hold On” will go as a song. EDM/pop crossovers are hot these days, especially those that come with well-known names singing the hooks. The song has been released on streaming platforms, and with names like Aoki and Tomlinson attached to it, radio could pick the track up in no time, especially in a period when the biggest singles in the genre are quickly becoming overplayed (see: The Chainsmokers’ “Closer”).

It has only been about a year since the four members of One Direction announced that they were going on hiatus as a unit, and in that time all of them have been very busy making names for themselves. As recently as October, it looked as if Tomlinson was going to be the sole holdout who abstained from stepping back into the spotlight musically, but now that is no longer the case. There were talks for a long time that the British singer was interested in sticking to behind the scenes work, focusing on songwriting and perhaps putting together a girl group, but with the launch of “Just Hold On,” he’s back at it in a major way.
