Sorry this was so late! Classes and papers kept me down from writing. To @fuckyes-formulas
It’s over 4,000 words so it’s a long one. (Though I did have a longer one but I felt like this was the better one.)

Looking up from the map in his hand, Matthew’s lilac purple eyes observed the gathering crowds of people in the entrance area of the carnival, impressed with the outcome, as well as at the tents and the rides that could see home his spot on the edge of the grounds used, all wonderfully loud and bright, with lights and colors. Resembling a city of rainbows, stand tall and proud in its entirety. The blonde had just purchased his ticket and was about to head in, moving with the flow of the crowd when he noticed his brother, Alfred, had disappeared from his spot beside him.
“A-Alfred??” Matthew said, looking around in confusion, surprised that his brother had just upped and disappeared on him, just as they had gotten their tickets.
After a quick observation and conclusion that Alfred wasn’t out anywhere here, the area located between the parking lots and the fair, Matthew decided to move into the outer edge of the actual fair. He hoped Alfred hadn’t go too far in, that he wasn’t walking around deer and deeper into the place. That would be making finding him more of a nightmare then it already was.
Taking a deep breath for both courage and strength, Matthew stepped into the moving mass of people and let it carried him in.
He slipped and moved past people like a fish in a river, agile and swift, avoiding being pushed and shoved thanks to his strange ability to be invisible. When at least he was in the actual fair he side-stepped to the calmer, less crowded areas where the back of some of the stands were located. Quickly he pushed his glasses father up his nose while his eyes scanned the crowds for his brother, which proved difficult given how many people there were. It was like looking at a box of colorful Legos. You could look at the whole and miss smaller pieces, but if you focused too much on the smaller ones you can miss the other’s. It was ironic given how childish Alfred could be.
“Alfred…come on, I told you to stay near me!” Matthew said out loud to himself, his voice being swallowed by the constant thrum of other sounds coming from all different directions. His patience was fraying as he stood there, sometimes glancing at his phone to see if his brother had sent a message or tried to call him.
The only reason Matthew was even here was because of Alfred’s promise that the he would get pancakes for three weekends straight if came here together! It involved eating the carnival style food and going rides that made him uncomfortable, staying for as long as his blue eyed American brother wanted, and to listen to all his talk being fearless. ‘He could have at least kept his side of the bargain…and not left me.’ He thought, standing there like a lost child, arms crossed over his chest with an expression that told other’s he didn’t want to be here. “I swear you’re it a 5-year-old trapped in an almost grown man’s body Alfred…’ He thought. If he had to wait any longer he’s going to security to report a lost child, making sure to emphasis the child part.
As he stood there, thinking over what to say to say that would embarrass his brother the most, he felt a firm but sharp slap to his shoulder, causing him to squeak loudly despite the noise around him. “Dude! Guess what I found!!” Alfred said.
Swiftly turning around, Matthew saw his brother smiling cheerfully and holding what looking two sticks of something triangular shaped and deep-fried. “Alfred! First, don’t sneak up on me! And second, I told you not to walk away from me, so why did you do it?? And third, what in the world are those??” His hand was over his heart as he inspected the unknown food, noting the sheen of grease on them and the gentle curling steam coming off the pattering coating.
Alfred took a bite of one of the unknown objects and handed the other to Matthew. “They’re deep fried cheesecakes! And I didn’t sneak up on you! You just have the hearing of an old man and have the reactions of a rabbit.” He said, earning him a glare, before continuing. “And I had to go bro! These things are supposed to be super good! And cause they’re super good that means they’re super popular, so they would have sold out if we just stood there!”
‘Super popular huh…?’ Matthew looked at the stick of supposed cheesecake with a little worry before taking it with nervous fingers. He didn’t feel reassured when he took a sniff and was unable to detect any scent coming off it. “Alfred…you shouldn’t have.” He said and contemplated tossing it while the other’s back was turned. But…since Alfred did wait in line for them, he should at least try it…and hopefully not die on the spot.
Taking a deep breath, he brought the golden-brown food to his lips and took a bit, his teeth breaking the crispy surface as the bizarre, creamy warm texture of the cake touched his tongue. Stand there, chewing the food, Matthew felt shivers run up and down his spine, a warming for him not to take another bite if he knew what was good for himself. It took all of his will not to make a face right there and to chew and swallow. The things he does for his brother.
His hand gave a few pats to his chest, to make sure the food went down all the way and not back up, before handing Alfred the stick with the rest untouched. “I don’t think this is the one for me Alfred…” Matthew said, instantly feeling a burning in his stomach as the back of his mind told he shouldn’t have had it.
Alfred shrugged. “Suit yourself. There’s more where this food came form!” He said, and took the remaining cheesecake and devoured it quick as lightening in front his brother’s eyes, like a hungry beast.
After both pieces of food were devoured they made their way deeper into the carnival. As they strolled onwards they were meet with music from the stands and speakers scattered around that drifted in the air and the streaks of delight from people on rides above them. “Where should we go first?” Matthew said as he pulled the map out of his pocket, opening it with a rustle and crackle of paper.
They both studied the map, noting any new rides and ones that were still in operation on the colorful piece of paper and talked over which ones would seem good to try, taking into consideration the lines that they could see and the time it would take to wait for them. After a bit of discussion, they decided to go on the nearby pirate ship themed swinging ride, with a decent line given the thrill factor of about a 4 or five out of 10 on Alfred’s personal scale.
As they walked up the elevated wooden path to the ride, Matthew felt his stomach revolt from the previous ‘treat’ he had, a burning sensation below his chest that rolled and coiled like a spell. Placing a hand over it in a futile attempt to lessen the feeling, Matthew looked up at the sky in an attempt to take his mind of it.
The bustle of the fair around him filled his ears as he and Alfred stood in line, making him feel as if he was in a different world. Leaning against the wood railing Matthew looked at the sky and quickly noted how few stars were shining up there in the black velvet sky. With the fair so illuminous it wasn’t surprising. There, standing in the line, he wished that a few could shine as bright as the artificial lights around him. At least the moon’s white and celestial surface hadn’t been diminished at all.
While he gazing up, pretending to listen to Alfred’s talking while he did so, he felt a sickly feeling roll down his body like a wave, making his body shiver lightly as his mind became aware of what was happening. The wave getting bigger by a fraction. ‘Great…not an hour in and I’m already feeling sick.’
Lowering his gaze back to earth, Matthew looked at the abundance of food stands nearby to see which ones sold water or soda, briefly focusing on one before moving on the next. Looking for anything really to help the storm in his stomach.
A few unsuccessful stands later Matthew found his eyes landing on an almond and pecan praline stand a few dozen years away. His purple eyes looked at the signs hanging on the small rolling cart, determining if this was where he could get his refreshments. As he did so, his eyes drifted over to a man standing next to the said cart, who so happened to be staring at him with eyes like burning coals.
The intensity of the stare made Matthew blink, surprised that someone would outright be staring at him. Was he looking at him or someone around him?
Feeling bold Matthew pointed a finger at himself, a silent question that, if this person was indeed looking at him, he would answer. Not a moment later did he get his answer in the form of a nod. And what looked like a smile.
Matthew’s heart jumped instantly. ‘Me? Why would he be looking at me? Do I have something on my face?’ He wondered. But before he could figure out this conundrum Alfred was pulling his arm and dragging him to the ride, forcing him to look away from this mysterious man, and bringing back the feeling of sickness in his stomach. This was not what he had planned coming here…
*Short time skip*
Both brothers headed down the descending walkway off the pirate ride. One walking with confident strides, while the other the other in slow and uneven steps.
Matthew’s face was angled towards the ground, a precaution should his feel an overwhelming urge to throw up like he did not too earlier on the ride. It took some kind of intense will deep inside of him to not have thrown up on any of the poor and unsuspecting people on the ride. But now that the motion had stopped around him, it continued in his stomach. The going was slow, his steps slowed by the fear that too much movement would cause a spinning in his head that would trigger his nausea, while his hand clutched the railing as a way to feel some control over his body.
He would have given anything to not feel this way, would have done anything for some water, or a soda, to cure him. Looking up, Matthew had expected to find his brother waiting impatiently at the end of the ramp. But, fate wasn’t on his side. He didn’t see him there, or any other place that he could see from his positon. “God, damn it…Alfred, I’m going to kick…your…” The words died on his lips, the result of him turning his attention to anything other than his stomach brought his symptoms back like a wave. But what hit him first was a lightheadedness. And then everything was fading.
He had the strangest feeling that his ears were being stuffed, as sound grow muffled and distant, and ink like spots covered slowly spotted his vision, making him blind and helpless. With a groan his legs crumpled under him.
He thought he would have felt the wood railing, or maybe the planks under him as he fell over, but instead he felt nothing. Or rather, he didn’t at first. A moment of utter darkness later, he heard a voice calling out to him.
“Ah…Al…fred…?” He whispered as he tried to open his disobedient eyes. He heard the voice again, saying something. Something to him. He tried to move again, but the command didn’t connect with his body. As if he forgot what the meaning of it meant.
“….do…ll….you…..hear…?” It said in some strange distant, as if someone had taken his ears and hid them far away, so the sounds took longer for him process the words.
A few moments later, or what felt like moments to him, Matthew began to regain some of his senses. He saw lights that could only be coming from the fair glow in front of him and shapes that were the legs of people standing around him.
He felt something touch him, on his forehead he thinks, as he heard that voice again. “Hey there, don’t worry we’ve got you.” It said to his left. Groaning a little Matthew tried to move his head to locate the voice. “What…? Uh…” He said as his regained a decent amount of sense. He knew his body was on its side, and that he was on the ground away from the major flow of the crowds.
“Don’t move too much ok, just lay there for a little bit.” The voice, a man’s, said above him this time, speaking softly to him, right by his ear. His body shivered from it, the movement alerting the man above him. “You feeling cold?” He said and placed a hand on Matthew’s brow to feel the warmth of a sudden fever.
The warmth from the fingers felt like a brand on his forehead, and he was sure his glasses were fogging up. He lifted his head up and peaked over his shoulder, just to see who he was talking to.
The man, or should he say young man, was crouched next his form on the ground, wearing a leather jacket over a gray shirt and jeans with boots. Matthew didn’t know who this person was…but he felt familiar. Another man, this one taller with a head of some somewhat long dark blonde hair stood next to first man who had auburn locks, was asking his partner some questions. ‘Oh man…oh man, what happened?? What did I do??’
Matthew wished he just stayed unconscious, to save himself the embarrassment of the looks people were giving him, curious but nosy as they tried to find out what happened to him. He passed out, he didn’t know how long ago, but he did. And he felt sick too, but they must have already known that, given that he was on his side. He looked at them, the two young men, and noted a strange resemblance.
It must have been his mind playing tired tricks on him.
Taking a deep breath, he spoke up. “Um…who are you?” Matthew said, his voice quiet and unsure. The two turned their heads as they heard his voice and stared at him, studying him and thinking. The dark blonde spoke first. “He’s talking, that’s good.” Then the other, the auburn one, added “I thought he had a fever, but I think he was just in a little shook. You feeling ok? Do you feel like you’re going to throw up?” He said, his near glowing red eyes taking in his pale face.
‘That stare…wait a minute.’ “I saw you earlier!” Matthew said and pushed himself up, making the tan skinned man jump to grab him. “Whoa hang on there, don’t move so much. And yeah, you did. I was the one you waved to.” He said and gave Matthew a smile, remembering the moment.
His mind was relieved to know that, but his heart beat firmly in his chest. He was handsome to say the least, with a strong jaw and high cheeks bones and wavy but short auburn red hair over ruby red eyes, all of this pulled together with the sunglasses sitting atop his head. ‘Drop dead gorgeous was more like it…’ He thought, staring openly at the man. Noticing that he was being looked at so intensely, the man gave a smirk that could make Dracula’s heartbeat. “Is this payback for when I was staring at you?” He chuckled, his eyes never leaving Matthew’s. “Sorry about that by the way. I noticed that you were a little sick in the face as I was walking by you and that other person, and I wanted to make sure you were ok…but I don’t mind the staring.~” A wink brought a dusting of red over his pale cheeks. Was he in some kind of perfect dream? How did a man like this…wait, no! He just met him! There’s no reason for him to be making doe, or stag, eyes at him! But…god damn was he a catch. His voice made him forget what he was going, like some kind of spell from a wizard.
The man took Matthew’s silence as a cue to keep talking. “My name is Al by the way. Allen, but you can all me Al.” Again, that smile that made his heart prance like a newborn fawn.
“Allen…” He whispered, trying the name with his tongue like a flavor of ice cream. He liked the sound of it…and the taste. Cleared his throat to sound like he had more confidence when he really did, Matthew looked into Allen’s eyes. “My name is Matthew, Allen. And thank you, for helping me. I’m sure I looked ridiculous there at the walkway of the ride exit.” He said as the screams of delight from the said ride rose in volume.
Allen blinked and shook his head, making the strands of dark red hair shimmering in the light. “It’s not a problem. I just kinda jumped up to help really.” He said and helped Matthew into a sitting position, it being apparent that he wasn’t going to pass out for a second time. Hopefully. “Well, it was still kind of you.” He said. Even if this was just a small conversation as he was being looked after, it still made him nervous. He wasn’t the type to chat with an attractive person. “Aw, well, it’s not every day you get to carry a cutie like you.” Allen said with a confidence that could rivaled his brother’s. His words confused Matthew for a moment. ‘Carry?’
Now it made sense. Why he didn’t feel a throbbing in the back of his head. Allen…had caught him before he could hurt himself, and carried him like a prince or a hero to safety. Being carried…if the scene in his mind was as true to the real thing, he would have been curled protectively against Allen’s chest, being held and carried by the strength he possessed with his muscles. The warmth he would have felt…his head right near his heart, the beating in his ear…it made him feel like such a perv.
But Allen didn’t see it that way. He didn’t even mind when he saw the blush grow from a pink to a red right before his eyes. And he could have guessed what Matthew’s thoughts were, but he didn’t want to say. Not yet. Instead began to talk to him, asking about him and who he was with, what brought him to the fair, what he liked to do for fun, and other things. After a little bit, the small curious crowd left, along with Matt after a brief exchange of words.
He wasn’t sure how long it was, but they just sat there, like two kids in the dirt talking about anything and everything. Slowly the burning in his stomach began to fade, and his shaking limbs stilled. He felt so comfortable there talking with Allen that he was even touching his shoulder a few times, when he talked about the stuff he and Matt did together. The only thing that felt different was his heart. It’s beat made him feel alive, the flutters when Allen gave him a smile, to the deep, aching ones when his eyes wandered over his body at random times. It was just…nice. And if this was the result of coming to the fair for him, he’d go every night. Just to sit there and smile with Allen.
Sometime later a voice cut through the background, almost like a wail, as Matthew and Allen sat there. “Mattieeeeee! Bro! No don’t die on me, please!” The voice said and the small crowd parted to let a teary blue-eyed blonde through as well as the man that had been standing next to Allen, following close behind with his hands in his pockets, calm and cool. “Found him…” He said, his voice deeper and more rough then Allen’s, and his eyes that peaked over his sunglasses were a darker purple then his own.
Alfred nearly shoved his savior away in order to pull him into a hug. His tears fell like rain down his cheeks and onto his and Matthew’s clothes, making him a sight to behold, shaking and sputtering incoherent words as well as ones he could just barely understand. Matthew gave him a few pats as he was hugged, happy that his grip wasn’t as rough as it normally it. But it would take a miracle for him to be released.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry I didn’t know you were feeling sick! I thought you were just being a sissy and I didn’t see you follow me from the riiiiiiiide!” His wails and cries grew more intense with every word, which touched Matthew’s heart in a way. Except for the sissy part. That just made him want to huff. He tried to run his brother’s back to calm him but only managed to awkwardly rub his shoulder with his arms pinned between their chests. “Alfred, it’s ok. I know you forgot me, but I’m alright now. This man, Allen, you should be thanking him.” Allen, who sat with a bit of distance to avoid the downpour, perked up. “Me? I mean…I just carried him to a spot where he would get hurt.” Allen’s face had the faintest bit of red to them, making his face lovelier then it already was, in Matthew’s opinion.
Alfred looked over at the man, his nose running and his eyes as watery and blue as the sea, and threw his arms around him, pulling him into a hug of gratitude and saving his thanks over and over. “Dude, Allen, you saved my bro! You’re such an awesome hero! Just…you saved him! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Now that he was freed Matthew took a moment to breath properly as looked over at the rough man with the violet eyes. “How did you find him? He must have been impossible to spot with the crowd.”
The man, named Matt, just shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve camped a lot, and hunted a little bit too. I know how to find things and people. Plus, Al gave me a description. He said ‘He looks just like him. And he’s loud and will freaking out if he’s realized he’s gone’.” ‘An accurate description if there ever was any’ Matthew thought as he watched the two similar looking men, Alfred trying his best to keep hugging Allen while being politely pushed away, like a cat and dog trying to play together in a way.
“Hey, why don’t you take Matthew to the first aid area. Al might have learned some skills in this stuff, but he’s not an EMS.” “I never said I was one! I would have said I’m studying to be one. And for your information I am Matt! Next semester!”
Allen said but understood the message hidden. That to save him, he’d have to make sure Matthew was really ok. And that meant sending them away. ‘…it’s now or never.’ He thought sadly, knowing he’d have to leave his new friend. But, if the plan worked…
“Alfred, can you do that for us? Matthew hasn’t gotten sick, but he did pass out. And he should get an OK from the professionals.” He explained as saw Alfred gain some control of himself, wiping his eyes and making a determined face. “Got it! Come on Mattie! I passed by the first aid before I came back!” He said and turned his attention to his brother who was watching quietly. Carefully he helped his brother to his feet, the face and thoughts in Matthew’s head going unnoticed.
Matthew looked at Allen, worry and sadness flickering over his facial features. “Allen, wait, you guys aren’t coming with us?” He said, the hope of the other two coming with them was clear. His handsome ruby eyed hero shook his head, his own sadness touching his features gently. “It’s best we go. Alfred will take care of you ok?” His hands reached out and patted him down, getting rid of the dirt and dried grass from his clothes. It was a mercy, to have him close. ‘It might have been a short time…but it would have been nice to have gotten closer to him.’ He thought.
Some force must have been at work, because Allen paused in his cleaning of Matthew to look at his face. His face as set in a neutral expression, as if he was weighing his options. They stared at each other for a few moments. Moments that stretched longer then they felt as Allen so causally brushed him. When their eye contact broke, Matthew felt a little dazed. Like…a message was passed between them. Or a request.
Allen wanted Matthew to trust him.
His face changed as he looked to Alfred, giving him the typical ‘it was nice to meet you’ deal with his signature smile. Matthew stood there waiting. His heart was heavy but nervous as he watched them. With all the good byes said, Alfred and Matthew began their walk to the first aid stand, both young men waving to each other a final time.
Alfred’s hand was on Matthew’s arm, holding him just in case he felt dizzy. But he wasn’t thinking of his stomach, or of his previous fainting ordeal. He was thinking about Allen, about what he meant by trusting him.
“Hey, Mattie, what’s that in your pocket.” Alfred said as they walked in the crowds, his free hand pointing to his brother’s jean pocket that contained a small slip of paper with a number, a name, and a couple of words written on it.
“Hey Doll, miss me~?” It read.
