Snow & Co. became one of the only Kansas City-area restaurants or bars that started south of the Missouri River and expanded north of it when it opened a Gladstone location late last year.
We wanted to know why more restaurants aren’t venturing up north. We found that restaurateurs have been turned off by population trends — but that’s changing.

Harlem is the Northland neighborhood that you’ve probably never heard of.
This once bustling river town in Missouri played a pivotal role in the development of Kansas City.
In its heyday during the early 1900s, this 50-acre town was home to nearly 600 people.

North Kansas City’s newest neighbors are of the dark and furry variety.
Black squirrels have made their way to the Northland — likely via a traveling circus.
We found out about these relatively new Northlanders during a recent community listening session in North Kansas City.
Before Walmart or Target, there was Red-X.
A fixture in the Northland’s Riverside community for more than 65 years, Red-X is not your average general store. For one, it’s monolithic.
The L-shaped building takes up about 85,000 square feet. It’s a grocer, deli, pharmacy, liquor store, hardware store and unofficial museum.

If you use Missouri Highway 9 to commute to or from the Northland, you’ve probably wondered about this iconic North Kansas city fountain.
Turned on in 1995, the Children’s Fountain was designed to celebrate children, according to Kansas City Parks and Recreation. The statues are modeled after real Kansas City children.
A plaque on the fountain reads, “Let these splashing waters eternally refresh the commitment of citizenry dedicated to maintain a community and to working toward a world where children can play.”

The Northland can be literary, too.
Here’s a park bench statue of Mark Twain, sitting in the middle of downtown Parkville — a small Missouri River town just north of Kansas City.
Artists Helping the Homeless donated the statue to the community.

When we asked listeners to share their favorite things to do north of the Missouri River, visiting parks and trails were a big hit.
Here's a photo of some restored prairie land at Green Hills of Platte Wildlife Preserve, which features trails and wetlands “amid developed properties” in the southern part of Platte County.
“Platte County Parks & Recreation has also restored several acres of natural prairie grass which blooms brilliantly in the spring and fall,” the parks website says.

Here’s a little bit of Northland wildlife for you.
It’s a little early for Thanksgiving, but we spotted this wild turkey right off of Missouri Highway 45 near Weston, Missouri.

This overlook may seem familiar if you’ve ever taken senior portraits or engagement photos in the Kansas City area.
This popular camera spot in Weston Bend State Park provides a panoramic view of the Missouri River and neighboring Kansas. It is particularly busy in the fall.
Several people mentioned the park when we asked Kansas Citians about their favorite things to do north of the Missouri River.

If you’re into skiing, you’re used to crossing the Missouri River to do it in the Kansas City area, with Snow Creek offering the only slopes in the metro.
Lynn Hinkle, of Kansas City, Missouri, shares this photo of his son, Taylor Hinkle, and grandchildren, Jackson and Lily, from early March.
“We live in the Northland and when the boys were in high school at Park Hill, Snow Creek was a regular winter weekend destination with their friends. I had never been and wanted to see my grandkids learn to ski ...
“This was the closing weekend and there were many fun events that day, including the free lift pass if you wore a costume.”
No matter where you live in the Kansas City metro, you can still be a Royals fan.

This photo of a farmer’s market in Liberty, Missouri, comes to us from Jennifer Kempema.
The market runs every Saturday in the heart of the Northland city.
“Especially yummy is this family run booth that makes super yummy, fresh squeezed lemonades with ingredients like honey, coconut water,etc. We love to check out the market weekly for local produce, jams, breads, etc.”
Missourians seem to be captivated by Jesse James.
The notorious outlaw left his mark all over the Northland and farther north of the Missouri River. James died in St. Joseph, Missouri, and was buried in Kearney, Missouri.
Also, his gang committed the first bank holdup during daylight hours in the United States — in Liberty, Missouri. Today, the original building is a museum commemorating the outlaw.

Antonio Mora sends us this view from Shoal Creek Parkway Trail, also known as Happy Rock Trail, in Gladstone, Missouri.
“It's by my house in the burbs here so it makes for a nice walk to, from and through it,” Mora says.
“The trail is about 5-7 miles if you include the walk through Happy Rock park in Gladstone. Most of it is paved, as well, for the non hikers. It's a nice getaway from the usual suburban lifestyle.”
