Brain structure, volume, and integrity have been shown to be compromised by the various types of CA. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), orbitofrontal cortex, and hippocampus all have reduced volumes in children who have been maltreated (Cohen et al., 2006; Hanson et al., 2010; Opel et al., 2014). In addition, functional connectivity and network changes occur in several brain regions of individuals who experienced maltreatment during childhood, including the prefrontal cortex, ACC, hippocampus, and amygdala (for a review, see Teicher et al., 2016).
