D4th of July Review!

My review of the best weekend I’ve spent in Minneapolis is live. In the last two and a half weeks I’ve seen Dillinger Four’s “Doublewhiskeycokenoice” twice, which is about 200% more than average. Last night it was at the Victory Lounge by Gentlemen Prefer Blood from Los Angeles. In this very same venue a few months ago I was hanging out with my friend Tony, and playing the occasional pinball game. I was mid flip when a girl he knew came in. I over heard them talking. She was tired and had a long, stressful day. He offered to buy her a drink and she asked for a double whiskey coke. Tony’s knee jerk response was “No ice?,” to which she said, “No, ice is fine.” I quickly managed to trap the pinball on a flipper and look at him. There was no way I could play well when I’m laughing that hard about a pop punk joke that went over this poor girl’s head. My friends are completely ridiculous in the best way.
The other time this month that I heard that stiff drink of a song was by Dillinger Four themselves. My mere thirty years of pulling air means that I’ve only been able to see bar shows for nine of those. This, coupled with my geographic misfortune of not living in the Midwest means that I miss a lot of my favorite bands. I think it’s the weather that helps make the tunes I really love. The Northwest, which has been my home since 1996, is responsible for some incredibly beautiful and morose lyrics. With their extreme summers and bitter winters, the Midwest is no stranger to this either. So this was the first time I’d ever seen D4, on our nation’s birthday, AKA D4th of July. I’m about to submit my live review of this magical weekend of music wherein I saw sixteen bands and three comedians to Razorcake for their website. But before I referenced my infrequent blog, I figured I should throw some words at it. These are those. And as a teaser, here’s an excerpt from said piece:
“Contrary to their live reputation, D4 played tight and serious. That’s not to say that there wasn’t any goofiness. Early on in the set, Paddy requested that four shots of Jameson be brought to the stage. As Eric tried to decline, a hand clenching a fifth of Jameson emerged from the front of the crowd. Shots were cancelled and the band drank straight from the bottle. Don’t let the six foot tall stage, barriers, and security guards fool you; we were still at a fucking punk show at the Triple Rock. They prefaced “Folk Song” as being about making your own success even if it’s in a shitty town. Directly after that Paddy realized that Lifter Puller only got popular after they left Minneapolis and promised to never play that song again. Almost all the banter came from Mr. Costello - he thanked baby Jesus, and proclaimed that Toys That Kill and Tenement are the best current punk bands in America. The only regret I have about their set is that they didn’t play “Twenty-One Said Three Times Quickly” on their Twenty-first birthday. Really guys? I thought that’d be a given, now that they’re twenty-oooooone. And I know that “Gainsville” is about Fest, but I couldn’t help to attribute every feeling in that ballad to the ones I was having at D4th. It felt like October in the Summer.”

While it’s critical to draw attention to the systemic inequality that trans women of color face, there are few media representations of them as complex individuals rather than victims. It’s more common to hear about trans women being murdered than to see examples of them thriving — and that’s without getting into the abundance of transphobic stereotypes in pop culture. While Janet Mock and actress Laverne Cox, who are both trans and Black, have used their platforms to share their struggles as well as their triumphs, those without their level of influence have few outlets to make their stories heard on their own terms.

Tonight I secluded myself in my favorite punk bar to hammer out the last half hour of transcribing an interview I did a while ago. I take on a lot in short order and have every intention of finishing up projects on time. But I always manage to forget two things: 1. How long projects take in real time 2. How utterly depressed I can get at the drop of a hat Both of these circumstances makes it equally difficult to complete the things I want to do. Emphasis on the latter. I never plan for feelings of utter desperation or being void of all motivation. All I can do is try to smile and keep moving. It gets so fucking overwhelming though. I wanted to start this blog as a way to write SOMETHING every day and most times I can barely make myself get out of bed. Maybe I should start over celebrating when I do accomplish things? Mostly I just want to be alone and read or sleep. Yesterday I forced a friend who shares the same debilitating issues to hang out with me. We both share preoccupations for giving up and fantasizing about when all the bull shit is over. What I wanted to be a "heavy, cathartic, dealing with the demons of life" session, turned into a very surface conversation where I don't feel like either of us connected in a way we could help each other. So I spent a large portion of it playing with their cat. When I left I remembered it was another friend's birthday who lives near by me. So I headed over there searching for that former clarity. What I walked into was a beautiful backyard fire pit surrounded by friends singing "The Ocean," one of my favorite Against Me! songs. In the midst of "hellos" and wood fire smoke, we belted out the anthem of our formative years and celebrated another notch of life on our friend's belt. The love around that concrete circle was insurmountable. Why can't every day go this well? Tomorrow I'm giving it 110%. I've got two wonderful women to see who have been absent from my life for too long. Here's to trying and failing and healing and winning.

Just as a heads up, STERN PINBALL, INC. deleted all but 8 comments on their most recent post on their page where they posted an fantastic article about the inclusion of women in pinball with the lead in of their own outrageously condescending that reads “Girls, girls, girls!” Last night there was a great and insightful thread going. I left a comment. It’s gone. A gentleman named Nick left some great comments, they’re gone. Numerous women spoke up about Stern’s bizarre behavior in posting this the same day as the Whoa Nelly crap, and that’s all gone.
Stern will only continue to use their social media and their status in the pinball industry to further silence anyone who calls them out on their ridiculous behavior. Thank goodness they decided to respond to and leave this gem up though.
I got banned from their page for commenting on that article. So awful.
Oops, they did it again. Stern announces that WhoahNellie:Big Juicy Melons is available for immediate purchase. As usual, their FB post has deleted any comments that are not full of praise. The only comment left up (for the moment) which calls out the problem with the art package is by Jace Proctor. And look at the replies he’s gotten. For all of you following along at home, please note that I am not personally allowed to comment or like anything on the Stern FB page. But you can. If you agree with me that this is a harmful use of Stern and WhizBang’s talent and money, please respectfully let them know. Thanks.
This is so terrible for women and for pinball. I hope I never see one. Disgusting game created by straight white males with lots of money. Totally a slap in the face to all women.

ONE PUNK'S GUIDE TO PINBALL By Kayla Greet My brain is exploding

I had major plans to travel to the UK this year and something felt off. After asking when I should buy my ticket for the third time, the friend who offered me a place to stay in Manchester dodged the question again. So I asked straight out, "is this the part where you tell me not to come?" The short of it was yes. The rug has been pulled out from under me. The last 6 months of saving feel a little silly. Their reasons were that we don't know each other very well and they felt like I had some obligations that they couldn't fill. The saddest part to me is that I've talk to this person 3-4 days a week for the last 8 months and they feel like they don't know me. That's more than my own mother! The conversation about visiting went from "of course you can stay with me!", b/w at least one overstatement wherein they offered to pay half my ticket, to "I have a girlfriend and live at home." I hate when reality sinks in and you're left with people who fall short of their commitments. I guess they're surprised that I was actually serious? But this changes my whole game and will require a fuck load of more saving so I can cover boarding now. It hurts a bit but I'll figure something out.
