Before cemeteries existed, families would commonly be buried together in the ground, close to their homes. They took comfort knowing they would remain with people they loved after passing.
Churchyard burials around the 17th century popularised the use of individual headstones, however they were common among the wealthy and not so much an option for the poor, especially the use of quality materials that would last longer.
The victoriana era helped change this popularised modern memorials and a wider variety of materials, inscriptions and decorative options.
