Regarding the blog description
for people who are actually in good faith wondering why I say people who want homesteads should fuck off, here is my in depth thoughtful answer so that I can redirect the next hundred asks to this post:
the problem with this post is that i am both uneloquent and definitively white, and therefore there are uncountable numbers of other people who have made all this points better and with more authority. i will attempt to lean heavily on other sources in explaining myself, but i always invite people of colour to add onto this post or direct me to other sources which i can add. with that disclaimer out of the way:
no it isnt racist to want to go on a picnic and wear a peasant blouse, but YES cottagecore aesthetics were and are extremely popular amongst conservative movements like neo-nazis, trad-wives, eco-fascists and terfs. You might notice that these sorts of people pervade the cottagecore tags on tumblr and other social media sites like instagram and tiktok. This isnt random; pastoralism and other rural and backwards looking aesthetics have a long rich history of being appropriated to further racism and colonialism. this article does a much better job than i could of explaining this, as does this one.
it is my goal in running this blog to be actively and aggressively against the reactionary and incredibly harmful political movements that seek to actively infiltrate and recruit from this aesthetic space, thus my description.
as for the term βhomesteadingβ specifically, there has been some confusion from those unfamiliar with the history and deeper political meaning of the term. here is an excellent explanation of the history with further reading on the history of homesteading and the homestead act specifically, as well as being overall a good read. and yes, people who keep sending me asks asking if this applies to canadians, it applies to everyone, not just americans. because the term has such a violently colonialist history, and represents a desire which is so easily coopted into fascist βblood and soilβ type rhetoric, i am strongly apposed to the term and deeply suspicious of any online who use it. not everyone who has ever wanted a cottage is being purposefully violently colonialist, but i do consider the term a white-supremacist dogwhistle
oh and i dont hate farmers. for some reason a group of braindead terfs screenshotted the description and accused me of not knowing where food comes from lol. like ? ok. do you people think the food in the grocery store comes from the adorable little cottage gardens of beautiful white women in straw hats? anyway, people of colour especially indigenous people please feel free to add onto this, correct me, ect. brain dead terfs please feel free to continue embarassing yourselves in my inbox
