Phil took in what she said. Martial arts training would explain why she was so graceful in her movements. He had never met someone who was trained in martial arts before. Of course, the fact that she was good enough to have been recruited by SHIELD made him nervous. She really would be able to kill him during their first practice.
When she asked if he had combat experience, he felt a thrill of anxiety. He didn’t want his new partner to be upset that she was paired with someone with no training at all.
“Nothing practical,” he finally replied. “I’ve studied most of the tactics and strategies used in World War Two, and I’ve studied the fighting styles used by Steve Rogers. But in terms of actual fighting…not unless you count being beat up at school. I suppose I do know how to take a punch.”
His lack of practical experience didn’t bother her. Admittedly she had been hoping to be paired with someone who did have some so that she would have been able to practice some harder move patterns, but she wasn’t about to complain about her new partner. The main thing was that they would get on, given that they would be required to spend plenty of time together, and she was already getting the feeling that they would.
“I can help cover the basics,” she promised, shooting him a quick smile as she quickly pushed away the flash of anger she felt towards whoever had beaten him up at school. She didn’t like bullies. “And if you ever want to get in some training between classes, just let me know. By the time we’re done here, you’ll be able to take on everyone who beat you up at the same time and knock them all on their asses.” She paused, her smile taking on an amused edge. “Of course, I’m not saying that you should do that, but you’ll be good enough to.”
shieldrecruiter:
Phil smiled, stretching before focusing on Melinda again. “Well now I’m gonna feel bad for keeping you up so late. Come on. Let’s go to bed. You need you’re beauty rest if you’re going to keep up with me.” He smirked, nudging her playfully. He liked the fact that she teased him and he could tease her back. It felt comfortable, safe.
He glanced at the clock as well. Damn it was late. Even if Melinda didn’t go to bed, he’d have to soon. They might have the day off today, but he wanted to spend time studying later. He couldn’t do that if he was half-awake. He had to be awake so he could focus. Not that he would tell anyone that was his plan. He didn’t like people knowing how much time he spent studying, although he figured Melinda probably guessed.
“And I don’t think a bad back is going to change the fact that you beat me every time. One of these days I’m going to win though. And then I’ll be a much better agent than you.” He grinned at her. “And it will happen soon.”
Melinda rolled her eyes at Phil’s remark about beauty rest. “Well, I suppose you have to best me in something, at least,” she retorted, a teasing glimmer in her eyes as she smirked back at him.
She raised an eyebrow at him when he told her he’d beat her, the smirk still in place on her lips as she chuckled slightly. “Don’t count on it!” If she was honest, she actually thought he was better than he gave himself credit for, and she wouldn’t be too surprised if he did end up beating her one day, but she was hardly about to admit that. At least not under these teasing circumstances. “I’ll still be able to kick your ass when we’re in our 50s.”
She gestured with her head in the direction of the door, suggesting they make their way back to their rooms. Even if she didn’t have to get up early, she still wanted to get a decent nights sleep.
“Looking forward to having a day off?” she asked, turning to leave.

Phil swallowed. He should have expected that question, but his answer would only serve to show how little he deserved to be there. But, if they were going to be training partners, she deserved to know who she was working with. He didn’t want her to think he was better than he was.
“My senior thesis in college was about how the people who created Captain America are still working as a shadow organization today,” he admitted. “I ignored demands to stop so many times that they finally recruited me. It wasn’t really a decision so much as a ‘join us or we’ll make you disappear’ kind of thing. Also finding out SHIELD was real was kind of every fantasy I had as a kid coming true, so…” He trailed off, shrugging sheepishly. He hadn’t really meant to say all that, but sometimes his words got away from him.
He gestured towards her. “What about you? What made you decide to join?”
His answer certainly hadn’t been what Melinda had expected, but that wasn’t a bad thing. Hell she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t a little impressed by his tenacity - she couldn’t imagine it had been easy to ignore SHIELD’s demands the way he had. She gave him a smile, nodding almost approvingly even though she doubted her approval would mean anything to him. And why should it? She was a recruit here, just like him.
When he directed the same question to her, she hesitated for a brief moment. She didn’t want to lie, but with a background like his it was unlikely he knew about her mother, and she couldn’t deny that it would be nice to have someone, for once, not look at her with any expectations.
“I took martial arts when I was younger,” she started, giving a small shrug. “I was quite good at it, did a few competitions and got some good results. I got approached after one of them, some SHIELD scout had come to see if there was anyone worth their time, and apparently he thought I might be.” It wasn’t a complete lie; her martial arts classes had made it clear to her that she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps, and SHIELD had attended one of her competitions. All she left out was that their interest had been there before they saw her fight.
“Have you had any combat experience?”
Would you have stayed with SHIELD after it fell if Coulson hadn't been there?
“I don’t know. With him being there, it didn’t even occur to me to walk away even though we weren’t on the best terms at that point. I think it would depend on why he wasn’t there. If he had never come back after Loki killed him, then I’d have still been in that cubicle so chances are I’d have walked away. If he’d died when SHIELD was falling, I might have stayed so that he didn’t die for nothing.”

Phil looked around at the other recruits, feeling completely out of his element. There was no way he was qualified to be here. He was surrounded by soldiers, athletes, scientists, all of whom seemed to have a lot more experience and skill than he had. Sure, he had been recruited by Nick Fury, who had never had a failed recruit, but that didn’t help Phil feel any better.
The training agent started pairing them up, and Phil got even more anxious. What if he ended up paired with one of the beefcakes?
“Coulson, May,” the agent called. Phil stepped forward and looked over at the other trainee. Okay, so not a beefcake. That was comforting. May looked relatively normal. Probably still more qualified to be there than he was, but at least she didn’t look like she’d kill him during their first combat training.
The agent finished pairing people off and explained that they would be partnered for the rest of training, so they should get to know their partners now while they had the chance. As soon as they were released, Phil turned to May, holding out his hand.
“Hello,” he greeted politely. “I’m Phil Coulson. I guess we’ll be working together for a while.”
Melinda stood quietly as she waited for the training agent to arrive, her gaze taking everything in. The other recruits were mostly bigger than her in terms of both height and muscle, though that didn’t worry her as much as it might have done. She trusted that she would be able to hold her own despite the obvious disadvantage she had. After all, SHIELD had shown interest in her for a reason. Yes, that reason was probably mostly due to her mom’s reputation as one of the CIA’s finest operatives, but surely that wasn’t the only reason? Whether it was or not though, she was determined to prove herself.
She straightened up when the agent arrived, the room falling silent as everyone waited for the pairings to be announced, excitement and nerves seemingly filling the room in equal measure.
At the sound of her name, she stepped forward and glanced across at the recruit she had been paired with, mentally assessing him as they waited for the agent to finish reading out the pairings. He was smaller than the others, but she of all people knew that a lack of obvious muscle did not mean a lack of skill.
“Melinda May,” she offered, giving Phil a quick smile as she shook the hand he had held out. “And I guess so.” She paused, never one who was good at all the small talk. “What made you decide to join SHIELD?”
shieldrecruiter:
Phil slowly woke up, blinking. It took him less than ten seconds to realize the room was quiet other than Melinda. He smiled, eyes still closed. She was one of his favorite recruits. They worked well together, and she made a little more bearable to be surrounded by people that were better than him.
“So what’re you still doing here?” he asked, finally opening his eyes. He slowly stood up, yawning. “You should’ve gone to bed with the others. I would’ve been fine here.”
Despite what he said, he was already stiff and he’d only been dozing for a couple hours. And he did appreciate that she had stopped to make sure he was okay. It wasn’t something he was used to. Before SHIELD, he had never had anyone other than his Mom that had ever really cared like that. It was one of the things that made him love it here. He loved having a place to belong. A place where he wasn’t lost to the background or forgotten about or bullied. All of the recruits got along pretty well, even if they weren’t all close friends. They were bound by the struggles of the strict training.
Melinda smiled a little as he woke up. She got on well enough with the other recruits, but Phil was easily the person she felt most comfortable with. They had been paired up to train together, and had quickly found they worked well as a team. And, unlike the recruits who came from similar backgrounds as her own, he wasn’t aware of who her mom was. At least, if he was then he didn’t comment. It was nice to have someone around who didn’t hold expectations for her.
She shrugged in response to his question, giving a small shake of her head. “The last few only went to bed about half an hour ago, I figured I’d stay and watch the end of the movie. And I know how uncomfortable that chair is. If I’d left you, I’d have felt bad when you spent tomorrow barely able to walk. Or, technically I guess it would be later today,” she corrected, brow creasing a little as she glanced over at the clock. At least they didn’t have to get up early for training that day.
“Besides,” she added, chuckling a little as she turned back to face him. “I don’t want to lose our next training match because you messed your back up sleeping like that.”
@shieldrecruiter continued
If there was one thing Melinda had found, it was that being a SHIELD recruit left you with very little free time. Not that she’d been surprised at that - having grown up with a mom in the CIA had given her a pretty good idea of the demands of life as an agent. Even so, it was a welcome respite whenever they did manage to grab an evening such as this to themselves and just relax and unwind for a few hours.
As the clock ticked past midnight and into the early hours of the morning, people at last began to filter off back to their own rooms until Melinda was the only one left, apart from the sleeping Phil Coulson. The credits of the last movie started to roll and she stood up from the couch, stretching a little as she crossed the room to switch the TV off. Then she turned to face the arm chair where Phil had yet to stir.
He was obviously worn out, that much had been obvious to her even before he’d fallen asleep, and so part of her didn’t want to wake him. She knew from experience though that the arm chair was not the comfiest of places to sleep, and so she made her way over to him. “Hey,” she called out softly, stopping a short distance away. Ideally she didn’t want to shake him awake, not knowing whether he would have any reflexes to that and not really wanting to find out when she herself was less than fully awake. “Coulson. Movie’s over.”

“I distinctly remember a certain archer breaking that bottle over the head of a Russian, before said Russian threw him out the window.” He retorts, placing the bottle and the glasses before her. “Fucking Radcliffe” He grumbles, breaking the wax seal on the bottle with a well trained ease.
“Well, we are technically running on a skeleton crew while everyone tries to recuperate from Aida and Radcliffe’s schemes” He offers pouring a glass and leaving it infront of her before pouring his own. “The sooner this S.W.O.R.D business is overwith the better.”
She chuckles softly at the retort, shaking her head with an amused smile. “I wonder what they’re up to these days. It’s gone pretty quiet since Cap and Stark had their falling out.” Of course she knows they must all be trying to stay under the radar, but she can’t help but be curious as to how they two former SHIELD agents are getting on.
At the mention of Radcliffe, her expression drops, jaw clenching for a moment. “Someone could have done with paying attention to what happened with Ultron,” she remarks drily. How Radcliffe ever thought it would be a good idea to mess around with robots she will never know. “Though I suppose if he hadn’t, you and Fitz could have been stuck in that other dimension, so at least something good came of it.”
She picks up the glass, swirling the liquid round the bottom of it once as she waits for Phil to pour his. “It will be,” she assures, flashing him a quick smile as she raises her glass a little more to clink against his. “And we might be running on a skeleton crew, but we’ve definitely been in worse situations.”
