Independent RP Blog for Himeros from Greek Mythology. Be sure to read my about page to understand...

So, I made a new blog? 

Honestly, I’m curious about doing more angst with this blog. 

Because the first Greek play form was Tragedy. And what is more tragic than the tale and fortunes of two brothers? 

Consider, Aphrodite had twin boys by way of Ares. One was Eros, god of requited and romantic love. The other as Himeros, god of sexual pleasure and unrequitted love. At first, you’d think that one would prefer Himeros, but that’s not the case. 

Consider that, mortals love Eros. Valentine’s day is a day dedicated to him, writers and artists romanticize romantic and ‘true’ love, and extol its virtues. 

By contrast, Himeros is vilified and hated, blamed for infidelity and crimes, while mortals curse him as being the cause of the world’s evils ( see Eve seducing adam and the fall from Grace in medieval thought ). Even when he tries to do good like starting the Summer of love, others show up and pervert his creation, ruining it. 

Hell, Hera banned him from Mt. Olympus, seeing him as the avatar of what she, the god of marriage hates most: marriage infidelity. Not to mention, a possible scapegoat for Zeus’ own sexual actions, despite the fact he was doing that before Himeros was even born. 

Reviled by gods and mortals alike, while his brother Eros is praise and lauded, Himeros is a hermit, bitter and resentful of others. After all, Eros walks freely among mortals, allowing them to fall in love. Himeros can’t do that, lest people blame him for who knows what. 

So meet Himeros. The bitter and unhappy god who just wants something that’s not shallow.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS. 

This is a pretty big issue for me actually. 

And not just because it’s really amazing to see what other muses say, think and feel about your muse when they’re not around but because I WANT SOME CONTINUITY. I’m trying to create a  continuity for my character where everything that isn’t an AU has feelings and actions making sense depending on a timeline and people they know and love. Actions have consequences. Relationships and events change people. Roleplay without that is… well, repetitive… and not very fulfilling to me.

I’m still rather on the fence I guess. Because I’ve always been drawn to characters that are really conflicting? I like the idea of Greek tragedy, that kind of ‘you get a benefit but also a curse.’ Ephraim is immortal, but he’s also trapped out of time. The Shade is immortal, but he’s also no longer alive and as time goes by he becomes more and more like the Darklands. 

And so what I don’t want is to pick a god that is TOO strong, or one that has a rather... conflict oriented personality, like say, Zeus or Poseidon. I mean Zeus ate his first wife and flooded the world once. Poseidon keeps hundreds of women locked up in his undersea palace. Not exactly non-conflict based gods. 

Ares is already done by a lot of good blogs, and I don’t really see myself being a good Hermes, and Hades and Hephaestus aren’t exactly adventurous. 

So I’m looking further and further down the line, trying to find a muse who I think people would be able to have fun with. And that brought me to Eros, god of love, but I feel like there isn’t much conflict there. 

But Eros is one half of a set of twins. He possesses a brother, Himeros.  Himeros is the god of sexual lust and uncontrollable desire. Which, keep in mind, the Greeks had anyway. Eros, sometimes depicted as Cupid, had a bow and arrow that made people fall in love. Himeros had a bow and arrow that did... well you can imagine what it did. 

But there’s one thing that makes him a bit more interesting, because he’s the twin of Eros. Eros, remember, is the god of requited and returned love. Eros is the god of finding true love, and living happily ever after. 

Himeros is the god of unrequited love. He’s the god that, essentially, everyone likes the idea of, because people are like “oh you can have anyone you want that must be great!’ but in reality no one really likes him because they don’t see past his power. So it’s kind of like a supermodel in essence, where people see pictures and they go ‘oh I’d love to be with them’ but they’re judging them entirely for superficial means, not on who they really are. 

So I imagine Himeros being a very lonely god. Because he can’t really be around people for very long. Eros, remember, if he’s simply around mortals, makes them fall in love with him, which is why he needs the arrows to get them to fall in love with others. It’s a trait he got from Aphrodite, his mother. 

Which means that Himeros is cursed with the problem of anyone around him getting rather hot and bothered because of what he is. And yeah, that seems cool at first, but it’s been thousands of years. Eros gets poems and songs and is essentially bumped up into the major leagues because everyone loves him. Meanwhile, Himeros is the brother through no fault of his own is demonized as being selfish and shallow because of what he represents, when in reality he’s jealous and unhappy as a god because Eros gets all the love, and he’s kicked to the curb at best, or at worst is characterized by people as being this god of rape or worse, and I imagine he hates it, given that he’s a son of Ares. 

And if we’re talking theoretical history here, I imagine he was the one that tried to start up the ‘summer of love’ idea, thinking it would help people be more free and be happy, and then it got out of hand, and all the problems came back, and now he’s even more dejected and unhappy, because what he wants is the love Eros gets, when all he gets are people who want him for his power and not him, and he can’t spend more than 15-30 minutes in the presence of anyone before their head is clouded over with lust and pleasure, and he can’t control that. 

I just have this image in my head of the dejected and miserable god of sex and pleasure just trying to read a book and drink some coffee, pining for his white knighted woman to appear who loves him for him... but then he’s got to leave quickly because people are starting to squirm and god dammit all he wants is true love. 

Actually, part of this is because of @weigella and her introducing me to Fables, and characters with various curses, like Rapunzel, who can’t eat dinner or see a movie in public because her hair grows too quickly and people will notice, or Prince Charming who people can’t help but fall for. 

Idk, something about a character who people think should be happy, but isn’t appeals to me. Because I imagine everyone would be like you’re the god of sex you don’t get to complain about being unhappy and he’s just miserable. 

Though the big fear for me is that people wouldn’t be interested in trying to deal with their characters having those urges naturally, which Himeros can’t control anymore than Aphrodite or Eros can.

Greek god blogs y/n? 

I’ve never played one and I kind of have an idea of a sort of tragic/troublesome muse who suffers because of his curse, and how it effects others? 

Just curious how people react to such muses in this fandom because I’ve only seen ares and maybe one hades. :o

It comes quickly, without concern or thought and Darcy is taken by surprise with how frank and open she is with the answer and a man she’s hardly met before.

“Well, I mean, you know, oblivion and death, I guess. Dying without having done anything, accomplished anything, with nothing left for anyone to remember me by or whatever and–”

Darcy realizes suddenly she’s rambling and she can feel the warm flush of her skin that foreshadows a blush settling in.

“What about you? You’re basically the dark and that’s, like, what? Probably the number one fear of most normal people?

What are shadows afraid of?”

“Oh, I am more than mere shadows. I am a part of what you might call the abyss, the entity that makes up everything outside of reality itself. If it makes sense, I am more than the dark; for what I use comes from a place where darkness does not even exist.” 

“Of course, it makes sense you would fear death, and it’s clear you strive to accomplish something. I imagine you also suffer from an acute feeling of inadequacy, a feeling that everyone else around you is accomplishing things while you are not.” 

“As for myself, I have already had to face many of my fears. I feared watching those around me die of old age... and my wife died of old age in 1904. I suppose now all I fear is losing anything, or more particularly, anyone I value.”
