Today Germany saw a record number of people gather together in Dresden. They sang Christmas Carols and smiled together. 17,000 Germans sang Christmas Carols whilst calling for the eradication of Islam and Muslims.
This was the latest and largest in a string of Islamophobic, racist and fascist marches by the right wing in Europe. As a Muslim growing up in the west I am more scared now than ever before. My ancestral homelands are ravaged by war and terror. And my home in the west now also feels unsafe. Islamophobia isn’t something small and uncommon anymore. It’s become accepted as something not only common but as something good. I fear for the future.
If people can sing carols while calling for the death of a billion people then how can I feel safe. I’m scared for the next generation, my younger siblings and their kids. As a student of history it’s frighteningly easy to draw parallels with period before the Holocaust. We all swore never again and yet now my people are the new targets.
Please share and reblog this so people can see that Muslims do renounce terror. We do not hate anyone. We are afraid of what the terrorists do. We are more afraid of what others will do to us because of them. Please share this. Help us see there is nothing to fear.
Is this post talking about the PEGIDA? They’re against the “Islamification of the occident” - and yeah, it’s as shady as it sounds. Unfortunately, since they’re officially “only” against economic refugees and radical Islamists like the IS and salafists, governmental powers can’t do anything against them - because of freedom of expression. Those idiots that wish the eradication of muslims in general are seen as individual cases - and some people actually praise the movement for “finally standing up against the problems”.
"Mainstream media" (the biggest newspapers and pretty much all TV-channels) are seen as "Lügenpresse" (lying press) because they deplore these marches harshly. Politicians of the big parties (pretty much all parties that don’t identify as right-wing) try to clarify that there is no danger coming from muslims so movements like these are non-logical. Well… you can imagine that the right-extremist activists call them liars again.
As a history student that has been focused on early 20th century German history, the rise of these movements (there’s also the HoGeSa, a hooligan movement, and other smaller groups) is repulsive and alarming. That’s exactly how the Nazi movement started in the 20ies. “I’m not against muslims, but some individuals really are problematic so I kind of support this movement” - that’s what’s dangerous about it. Followers.
What’s really ironic - but mostly sad - is that this demonstration took place in Dresden (there were two actually, one on the 23rd and one a few days before, with a few less people I think). Dresden is a beautiful city and ironically one of those big ones that has a very low number of immigrants and especially muslims - only 4,7% (!!!) are people without a German citizenship. So yeah, what we see there is mostly irrational fear. Other cities have right-wing demonstrations too, PEGIDA works in other cities as well, but there they can get only a few hundred participants (still too many).
What’s the problem with Dresden? Dresden was bombed without any goal except for “moral bombing” in WWII which makes it a popular travel destination for Neonazis - those people have a foundation of injustice happening in Dresden, “evidence” that they had to suffer injustice (yeah, these people also like to forget what German troops did to Prague, Rotterdam and other cities). That’s the first point.
Secondly, while Saxony and Dresden itself have a better economic standing than most of East Germany, the situation is simply not good. I have no idea if Germany is still seen as the ecomomic powerhouse in Europe and the world - maybe. Maybe numbers tell that. People here however are struggling with structural change. Places with the highest amount of neonazis are usually those that have the highest rating in unemployment, dept per capita and the lowest in graduations. That’s not only East Germany, the ruhr area is another example.
People that fear for their safety are the first ones to run over to movements who promise they will save them. It’s just the late 20ies over and over again. I, too, am very scared about this situation, even though I’m not in danger. I can only imagine how it must be like if you’re belonging to the group of people that these idiots want to see gone.
For romano-is-crying, hope you like it! and sorry for being late

You’re asking me to spend christmas with you. I think that implies enough about your guest list.
— Unless this is just your masochistic side coming out. Missed me that much?
[ Thus, the return of his smug disposition. Understandable, really. But it doesn’t help to have his ego stroked once in a while. It’s christmas after all, he can indulge. ]
And ruin all that hard work? [ He snorts and waves Ludwig off, but nevertheless steps inside. ]
You wouldn’t dare.
Not all of us are lonely, Gilbert. [with a faint smile he lets the other inside but then turns around to go to the kitchen] You can take a seat. I'll get the salad... [he starts to grin] On the contrary, I wouldn't dare to discard this beautiful christmas tradition of mine. [would gilbert even touch the salad now? Probably. ]
[ The urge to lay on the heavy sarcasm is strong with this one. Very strong. But, alas, he could try to be nice for at least one day. ]
I accepted, didn’t I?
What else did you want. I already got you a gift. Did you want me to bring eggnog and Baumkuchen, too? Even though it wouldn’t hurt you cut back a little
[ Keyword: Try. ]
[jfc why does Ludwig even try anymore] [that's what he asks himself too] You accepted, yes. But you also called me ugly and implied that nobody else would like to spend christmas with me. [and now he called him fat too but well he can overlook that one] [admittedly the two year old christmas sweater did his belly no favor] I can't believe you. But you're still dear to me, so come in. I mean I can still spit in your potato salad in secret.
