Remembering my mother
Happy mother’s day everyone. I usually don’t celebrate it but this year I can with my mother in law. She is an absolute doll. Both my husband and I were foster kids. I’m so happy he was adopted by such a loving family who fully accept both of us.
When I was ten my horrible dad murdered my mom. Leaving my sister Mia and I on our own. So I didn’t celebrate mother’s day anymore. Not even when we were adopted, but Mia did until she died about two almost three years ago. (Sorry if my English sucks I spoke Spanish for the first few years of my life so it’s hard to say things correctly).
My mother was warm like a summer breeze. She always knew how to cheer me up and just what to say to help things run smoothly. In my eyes, she was like an angel. She worked hard the first years of my life to make the both of us American citizens. She wanted the so-called American dream so we both worked together so we could have that dream. I know now she did that to protect me.
We moved from Cuba in with my new father and there we stayed. My dad was gone a lot which was good because he was an ass to put it simply. So my mom who could not speak English went and got a job to support our weird family. She was like a superhero able to keep everything running as it should and I wanted to be just like her. And when she passed everything seemed dark.
But soon came my time to be a “parent”. I’m not their actual dad but they look up to me as if I were one. I love saying little things in Spanish to them even though they get so lost. The same things my mom said to cheer me up. They are small and precious and to be perfectly honest a huge part of my life. I took things I remember from my mom and help them. They things she did and said. How she would do anything to make sure I was ok. My mother was limitless and that’s how I want to be. I’m glad that other people who are their friends have also “adopted” them to take care of them. And so to their mom’s I want to say, “Thank you very much for watching over them”. I can’t be my mother. I live so far away from them that I’m glad strong people have helped out. It means the world to me.
My mom raised me to be this kind of man. My mom raised me to be strong and helpful. With a mind of my own and the strength to fight for what’s right and stand up for the people dear to me. My mother shaped me into the kind of person who can be there for any problems my small child has. I watched her for ten years be strong yet kind that it kind of grew on me. And I’m glad. The memories I have with my mom I hold dear and close to my heart. And I hope to make those kinds of memories with my mother in law. I don’t know what else life will throw my way but I know my mom is watching over me in heaven and my mother in law is watching over me here.
