"Cheikha Hadda Ouakki is one [of] the great divas of Moroccan 'aita, perhaps comparable only to the famous Fatna Bent El Houcine, although not nearly as well-known outside of the country. Born in 1953 near the city of Khénifra, in the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains, to a family of nomadic shepherds, she was recognized for her singing even as a child. Determined to become a singer, she ran away from home as a teenager to escape the prospect of an arranged marriage. At the age of sixteen she met the singer Cheikh Bennasser Oukhouya and was invited to join his troupe. She's known for her facial tattoos that she got as a child in an attempt to make herself look older, and for her raw, powerful voice which has become synonymous with 'aita. She still performs today, now with the singer Zahraoui Abdellah."
