Repost from @ihartericka • It should come as no surprise that many people do not cite the work of Ida B Wells - our first Black investigative journalists, born into slavery in 1862, highlighted the egregious practice of lynchings across the South. Risking her life to bring to light the countless Black women that were also lynched, but were erased as the focus was on Black men. Wells worked with Susan B Anthony to instill anti- racist practices in the women’s suffragist movement, traveled the world lecturing about lynchings and wrote in the hopes that one day at least one person would get justice for the state sanctioned crime committed against them. In 2020, Wells was awarded the Pulitzer Prize- Special Citation Award aka an “Oops we forgot about you my bad you are great” acknowledgment. How not surprising that someone who was out to expose the murderous police state that is the US wouldn’t receive mass praise. ⠀ Over 100 years later, Kimberle Crenshaw would coin the term intersectionality that centered the violence Black women experience, years later she would have to create the hashtag #sayhername to interrupt the deliberate expunging that happens to Black femmes in death. The list I have compiled (third slide) is not exhaustive, but it does include Black trans and cisgender women/girls/GNC people, who have been murdered by police, Black cis men, white people etc. ⠀ This list does not include the countless Black pregnant people who have died at the hands of medical racism. The Lucys, Anarchas and Betsys or the Henrietta Lacks. This list does not include the multitude of Black femmes who have died at the hands of intimate partner violence. This list does not include all of the Black girls targeted by police. This list does not include the Black femmes who have been targeted and/or silenced at their jobs/school. ⠀ Breonna Taylor, Nina Pop and all we lost too soon, should have been able to celebrate more birthdays, had nationwide protests galvanized by their tragic deaths and their murderers held accountable. ⠀ They should all be here today.
