I would hate to have someone realize how much better I am in the sack than dashing Theodore.”

“I walk into it and I might. I’m only human after all.” Theo laughed. “Hmm, best not to set you up with anyone in a five-mile radius then. Can’t be going and bruising my ego like that” He teased, winking in her direction. “But I guess you’re doing alright on your own. I mean, you got laid and that’s always good.”

If there were less corrupt officials more concerned with doing favors than doing their jobs everything would work so much better.” Dorcas shrugged in response to his comment about his parents. “Hey, at least they’re around to care that you find a lovely girl to marry.” There was no bitterness in her voice, she was used to people being annoyed by their parents, but she thought it was important to be grateful for what you had.

“Okay, I’m definitely not drunk enough for that sort of political talk.” Theo chuckled. “I suppose.” He said as she shrugged himself. It was pointless to comment on the fact he was certain it was more for their benefit than his. After all, he wasn’t the type to resent his parents for sticking to their societies traditions so he tended to just ignore them most of the time. “How did you find yourself at this party?”

“Ugh, our government is so cheap.” She raised her eyebrows at his comment, he didn’t look old enough to have been coming to work events for many years. “Exactly how many pointless ministry events do you have under your belt?”

“Our government is a joke.” He said before pausing for a moment to think. “Well, other than this lovely Christmas party they throw every year there are usually two or three others I get dragged too. Wasn’t so bad before I left school. But now my parents like to drag me along hoping I’ll find a lovely girl to marry.” He told her with a laugh. “Over the years though I’d say I’ve been to at least a good few dozen of these events. Which is just depressing really.”

“No, because I’ve been on the receiving end of her anger enough times to know it’s very rarely worth it.” Narcissa did her best not to make her mother angry, but sometimes it happened despite her best efforts. “Thank you but I’d better not. I’m meeting her later and I don’t want her to suspect that I’ve been doing anything I shouldn’t. I’m just starting to get a little independence and if I ruin it, I’ll be miserable.”

“If you don’t want to drink why are you in a pub then?” Theo asked and he couldn’t help but be a little amused. “But maybe drinking this early is a little shameful. I’m going to have another thought if you don’t mind.” He said while motioning for a fill up.

She always felt better when Theo was around. He made her feel lighter, less tense about everything that was happening in her life. “Really? Maybe, I will make that your new job. Lucinda Talkalot’s personal wingman and matchmaker.”

“Only if you begged me.” Theo teased in return, winking in Lucinda’s direction. “I would make an excellent wingman.” He laughed. He’d actually probably be awful. Merlin knows the can’t stay in a relationship himself for longer than five minutes. “I could find you the love of your life. And then you would be in my debt forever for bringing joy into your life. It’s win-win for everyone really.”
