Varberg Fortress Moat Monster

Location: Sweden (Varberg) The coastal city of Varberg has a fortress, with a moat surrounding it. This moat connects to the sea. A small monster was said to live in the moat, and was first reported in 2006. It was described as brown with a 40 cm tail. There’s not much proof that the monster exists, and scientists suspect it to be a seal or a pike, but people still take an extra look at the murky moat if in case, they catch a glimpse of the monster. Devil’s Lake Monster

Location: North America (Wisconsin) Betentacled monsters were reported in Devil’s Lake in Wisconsin, and until now, still remains a mystery. The first sighting tells of a chief of the Native American tribe living near the lake assigned members to go on a late hunting trip with him. Soon after they set forth, the canoe was capsized by a huge, mysterious, cephalopod-like creature. The screams of their fellow tribesmen were heard by the others, and rushed to the scene, and they were able to see the horrible scene. Because of this, they offer sacrifices annually in homage to their fallen members.

Memphre

Variations: Memphré, Lake Memphremagog Monster, Sea Serpent of Memphremagog, Le Serpent de Lac Memphrémagog Location: Canada Memphre is said to be a long-necked creature, much like Nessie. It inhabits the waters of Lake Memphremagog in Quebec, Canada, and was said that it was last seen in 2005.

Lockski Nesski Monsterovich

Location: Russia (Eastern Siberia) Similar to the famous Nessie of Loch Ness, the Lockski Nesski Monsterovich was reported in a lake in eastern Siberia around the early 1960s. It was said to be a grand serpent measuring at least 30 feet in length. It also had a huge fin the size of its back. [Note: The picture is not actually the Lockski Nesski Monsterovich. This is an alleged picture of Nessie (Loch Ness Monster).]

The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary

Variations: Scythian Lamb, Borometz, Barometz, Borametz, Planta Tartarica Barometz Location: Central Asia (Tartary and Scythia) The vegetable lamb of Tartary is a notable cryptid, which was said to grow sheep instead of fruit. It was first reported in the 11th century. Henry Lee wrote in his book about the plant written in 1887, that the Scythian lamb was both animal, and plant. It was given the Latin name “Agnus scythicus”.

Awd Goggie

Variations: Caterpillar Faerie, Caterpillar Location: Yorkshire The awd goggie was a giant caterpillar-like monster which was used by parents to scare their children so they wouldn’t go into the forest without supervision. It is said that the awd goggie guards the forests and orchards of Yorkshire, and waits up in the trees for a person to pass by, and then drops themselves on them. Bakbakwakanooksiewae

Variations: Baxbakualanuxsiwa, Baxwbakwalanuksiwe, Gwagwakhwalanooksiwey, Hokhoku, Raven Location: Canada, North America Coming from Kwakiutla mythology, is the bakbakwakanooksiewae. The  bakbakwakanooksiewae (“cannibal at the north end of the world”) is a cannibalistic bird which was usually invisible, and used whistling as an indication of his presence. The bird attacked people, and fed on their brains and eyes, and was able to crush skulls with its huge beak.

Miga

Location | Distribution: Africa The miga is said to be a huge, freshwater-dwelling octopus that comes from African folklore. The miga dwells in swamps and deep lakes, and is said to have more tentacles than a regular octopus, ranging from twenty, to almost a hundred. Even if they dwell in such conditions, they have the ability to squeeze through the tightest of spaces, like normal octopuses, and hide in very shallow lakes. They say that anything it will come in contact with will instantly become its target, and the miga will tear its victim to shreds.

Variations: Iku-Tursas, Iki-Tursas, Meritursas, Tursas, Turisas Location | Distribution: Finland The iku-torso (”the infinite Torso”) is a monster from Finnish mythology. It is said to be an evil sea monster with no exact appearance because of the different depictions and accounts it has. Varying literature and the accounts also tell Iku-Torso as the spreader of disease, and is also said to be the god of war.

Location | Distribution: Japan The sagari (”drooping”) is an apparition of a horse head that suddenly drops out of a tree to scare away victims. Variations: Ă-mi’-kuk, Ä-mi’-kuk Location | Distribution: Alaska Coming from Inuit mythology, the a-mi-kuk was a weird creature living along the Bering strait in Alaska. It was said to be capable of living on both land and water, and feeds of unlucky fishermen, birds, and fish.

Variations: Piuchen, Pihuchen, Pihuychen, Pihuichen, Piguchen, Piwuchen Location | Distribution: Chile A gigantic, flying and shape-shifting serpent from Chilote and Mapuche mythology which is said to whistle in an odd manner, and is able to paralyze victims to suck blood out of them.

Amphisbaena

Variations: amphisbaina, amphisbene, amphisboena, amphisbona, amphista, amfivena, amphivena (feminine), anphivena (feminine Location | Distribution: Greece The amphisbaena (”mother of ants”) is a two-headed snake from Greek mythology that is said to have glowing eyes, and are “inseparable” because cutting it in half will have no effect on it, because it will rejoin once again. The creature can also shape itself into a hoop if the heads hold each other. Others’ depictions also say it has the wings of a dragon.
