I’m tempted to make an even more game-accurate and luxurious version of my yeto’s superb soup recipe as I can. Here’s the plan:

1. The Fish

The game calls it a “reekfish”, but it’s clearly a salmon. Before I used boxed fish stock, but this time I’m going to either get a whole salmon or a salmon carcass and make the stock myself. The local asian market has good prices on fish so hopefully it shouldn’t cost too much. I don’t have a pot big enough to get an 8ft long salmon so a normal-sized one will have to do.

2. The Pumpkin

The in-game model used for the acquirable pumpkin is orange and has a tiny turban, BUT the pumpkin floating in Yeto’s cauldron looks more like a kabocha. The closest I can think an ordon pumpkin might be is a buttercup squash (which has the tiny turban) or perhaps a sunshine kabocha (kabocha but orange), but I think the stores around here only ever carry the typical kabocha. There’s a farm 30-40 minutes away that COULD have other variants of pumpkin, but it’s a little late in the pumpkin growing season and I don’t know if it’s worth the drive if they don’t have it.

3. The Goat Cheese

The only goat cheese I’ve been able to find is chèvre, which is creamy and packaged in 4oz logs. However, the goat cheese in the game is wheel shaped, which makes me think it’s a bit firmer. There’s a charcuterie store downtown that has fancy cheeses, but I’m not sure if you can buy any outside of their pre-made platters. I might go in just to ask.

First I stopped at the asian market. Kabocha was bountiful. please look at how cute the baby kabocha are.

Next was the fish. It would’ve been like $40 for the whole salmon. That thing was like a meter long. It would have been wayyyy too much for this recipe and my brother didn’t want to clean and gut a fosh tonight so I got the carcass for $7. No head though 😔

Fish stock time!! Most salmon stock recipes said to simmer it about 30 minutes so that’s what I did. I don’t have a mesh colander so I used a regular plastic strainer over a mesh splash guard and strained it directly into the dutch oven I made the rest of the soup in. Stock turned out well! I picked the meat off the cooked bones and dropped it into the soup, so less meat than my usual recipe.

This is the goat cheese. The charcuterie shop only had one firm goat cheese. Def the most expensive item, $13 for 0.5lb 💀 The firmer cheese didn’t melt into the soup as well as the chèvre, but it did get gooey and left little bites of cheese to discover amongst the rest of the soup.

Finished soup!! Less stock made it extra thick and creamy. I don’t blend my soups because I don’t own a blender and neither does the yeti.

A lot of people had trouble finding boxed fish stock, so I’m glad I can recommend making it from scratch! It was pretty easy and it gave me something to do while the kabocha was baking. In total I spent almost exactly $25 and I had everything else. pretty good deal for 6ish portions!

Honestly I was kinda expecting the taste to really razzle my dazzle but it didn’t taste that different than how I usually make it. Which!! is still saying something because my regular recipe is still really good! thanks to everyone who’s tried it!! :D
