listen
say what you will about zane bennett. he could be an absolute jackass, he was mean and cruel and while there were a lot of reasons for that they were far from excuses, and a lot of times his stubborn refusal to let things go made shit worse for everyone involved….
but when the chips were down? when someone he cared about was in trouble (especially rikki)? there’s absolutely nothing he wouldn’t do to make things right
miriam deliberately got a necklace rikki desperately wanted, even though he had no idea why, and then she tricked him into kissing her to get it back for his girlfriend right when she would see it happen–and then she threw the necklace into the harbor… and zane didn’t even hesitate to dive in after it, because even if rikki was pissed, even if she hated him… she wanted it, and he wanted her to have it.
the instant zane found out rikki was one of the mermaids, he realized just how badly he fucked up–being obsessed with the idea of proving himself when the mermaid was just some freaky creature out in the middle of the ocean was one thing, but when he realized it wasn’t just some random creature, but rikki? he dropped absolutely everything–including his father–to protect her.
and then when he thought rikki had given up being a mermaid permanently, he didn’t care–he just wanted her. but in a split second, when she got splashed in public and turned to him in desperation??? he didn’t hesitate. he didn’t stop to think about the implications, he didn’t care that she’d been hiding the return of her greatest secret from him. he just wanted to protect her.
that’s all he ever wanted.
and i love him so much for that. season 3 can fucking bite me
rewatching the series, ive noticed a bunch of little things
like in the episode where we find out where rikki lives, and she gets upset with zane and runs off the dock, the first thing zane does is look frantically around, to make sure no one else saw
and then he went straight to her best friends, knowing that she didn’t want him following her, but she was upset and needed their help
he loves her so much i can’t
watch me still be mad about a show that ended 9 years ago just because my otp didn’t end up together
Remember when zane and rikki were trapped on the hotel balcony and he got really anxious because of his fear of heights and rikki told him to look at her and pretend she was something he admired like a painting or a fancy car to calm him down and he took one look at her and instantly relaxed because he didn't even have to pretend she was something else, he admired her enough 🥺

Zane leaning in close to tell Miriam that they were never together is honest to god just a beautiful piece of television history
We will never part and forget each other, because the first love cannot be forgotten.
#couples who judge together, stay together
