Hello there!

I have decided to set up a ko-fi account for myself. It’s not in any way mandatory--I’m never gonna charge for meta writing or fics or anything like that--I just thought, if anyone likes the things I write enough and has a little extra cash and wouldn’t mind kicking a couple bucks my way, that’d be stellar!

I write meta and get probably overly invested in fictional characters and relationships and even get down the occasional fic, so if you have anything you want me to talk about or a fic prompt or anything of that nature, send me an ask! I can’t promise a quick response (which is part of why I’m not presently trying to set up any sort of commission page), but I’m going to try to respond more frequently and more regularly--so if you like what I have to say and want to buy me a digital cuppa, it would be very much appreciated.

Again, there’s no obligation at all, just that I spend so much time online thinking about fictional characters and relationships and I’m in a bit of a rough spot mentally and emotionally, so this is my way of incentivizing myself to be a little more active, focused, and productive. There is 2017 novel, DS9: Section 31: Control, and it's sooooo f-u-c-k-i-n-g relevant to today I'm cringing with every chapter as I reread it.

Basically it reveals the crux of how section 31 could work in the 24th century:

it's an AI that's installed in EVERYTHING TECH. Which is EVERYTHING in Trek. Since the time of before Enterprise. You can't do or say anything that isn't monitored by a massive interstellar omnipresent super AI.

Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.

I feel like when I say ‘relatable’ what I really mean is ‘resonant.’ I don’t want characters who I feel are like me, I want characters who have emotions so strong I can feel them through the page.

I think this is important because a lot of us forget the power of stories to make us feel things about characters who are not like us, who have experienced things that we never will. The purpose of listening to someone else's story should not necessarily be identification, but understanding.

Time to take this post entirely too seriously:

I often wonder if this is why you so commonly see the sentiment that we are in an era of uniquely bad literature, or at least that the fact that most books don't have artistic aspirations and are not aiming to be anything other than mindless entertainment is new. In fact what's new is the idea that everything is worth preserving (and also the internet making it easier to preserve it). The dumb artistically unambitious trash books of the past have survived only sporadically, because people thought of them as literally disposable.

When I was in college I had a professor who was an expert on detective fiction. He had a longstanding beef with the idea that "Murders in the Rue Morgue" was the first detective story. He thought that it seemed way too polished to be inventing a new genre, and also that the whole orangutan business had the vibe of someone subverting preexisting audience expectations and maybe engaging in a bit of stealth parody. With the help of some student volunteers, he went trawling through old magazines and newspapers and found hundreds of detective stories from the early 1800s that just hadn't garnered enough individual attention to be remembered. This was because most of them sucked balls. He created an online archive of them, so you too can read these mostly terrible stories.

ZUTARA WEEK 2026 DAY 3: AURORA

While working on this fanart, I found myself thinking about the story behind it—and about what this moment would actually mean for them.

Katara often travels back to the Southern Water Tribe. Sometimes because her duties as an Ambassador take her there, but most of the time, because Zuko is the first one to ask when they can go back.

By now, everyone knows the Fire Lord has a soft spot for the Southern Water Tribe.

And it isn't just because the woman he loves was born there.

Zuko loves the quiet of the place. He loves the warmth of its people, the way everyone seems to make room for one another, the feeling of family that lingers in everything.

But most of all, he loves visiting Gran Gran.

The first time he returned to the tribe, she spent a good couple of hours scolding him—because, apparently, becoming Fire Lord didn't make him any less of a stubborn boy.

And then she welcomed him into her home as though he had always belonged there.

As though he were her grandson.

Almost two years have passed since then, and finally, they manage to return during the celebration of the Lights in the Sky that Touch the Earth.

And Zuko, even though he has already asked Katara to marry him, decides to ask her again.

Only this time, he wants to do it beneath the lights of the Spirits of her people.

Katara has already said yes.

But the second proposal was never really about asking her again.

It was about what that promise meant.

Zuko has never denied her culture. He has never denied where she comes from, and he never will.

So when he asks Katara to marry him beneath the lights of her ancestors, he isn't asking her to leave one world behind and enter his.

He's telling her that their worlds can exist together.

That their marriage will be built from both of them.

From the Fire Nation and the Southern Water Tribe. From his traditions and hers. From everything they were born into and everything they chose to become.

Because it would never occur to Zuko that Katara should have to give up any part of herself to belong with him.

And the same will be true for their children.

It won't matter whether they are firebenders or waterbenders.

They will know where they come from.

They will know the stories of both their peoples. They will learn both traditions. They will grow up respecting both cultures, carrying both histories with them.

Because Zuko doesn't want his children to choose between their parents.

He wants them to know that they never had to.

That they were born from two worlds that once stood on opposite sides of a war—

and that, somehow, they became one family.
