                         '     have    you   seen    carl,    sophia   ?     ‘      judith    resting    against    her    hip,     the    brunette    was    on    the   search    for    her    son.    he’s    been     going    out     on    his    own    sometimes,    leaving   her    questioning    where   he   ran   off    too.   she   was    glad   though,    carl    having    met    kids    around   his    age    but    he’s   always   had    sophia.      @notzombae

THE AFFECTION IS UNEXPECTED, but welcomed, though he isn’t quick to return it. Some of the awkwardness is defused, and Daryl finds himself able to relax. “Yer’ mom’s — she’s one of th’ best people I ever met.” He’s sure Sophia is already aware, but he feels the need to emphasise how strong Carol is. How good she is. “She’s done just as much fer’ me an’ everyone else.” And while she can certainly take care of herself, Daryl is always watching out for her. There’s very little he wouldn’t do for Carol Peletier.

A short, bittersweet laugh escapes him. While part of him wishes they’d had Sophia with them all along, he’s glad that she’d been spared the horrors they’d had to face over the past few years. He doubts she’s had it easy, but still — things have been rough. “Yeah, a little. Probably better that you did.”

Playfulness enters his tone, then; bubbling up as his eyes twinkle with a rare kind of amusement that comes when he attempts to make light of the things they’ve been through. “You want me to start with th’ cannibals or th’ pet tiger ?”

      sophia’s  eyes  went  wide.  cannibals  ?  pet  tiger  ?  fuck,  she  had  missed  the  really  good  stuff  it  seemed.  it  made  her  last  couple  of  years  seem  boring  &  uneventful.  though  her  journey  to  find  her  family  had  been  anything  but.  being  on  your  own  was  different  than  being  with  a  group.  it  forced  you  to  think,  to  be  alone  with  your  thoughts.

❛  seriously  ?  ❜  she  spoke  with  surprise,  an  eyebrow  shifting  upward  in  question.  ❛  you  aren’t  just  pullin’  my  leg  or  something,  right  ?  because  a  pet  tiger  isn’t  something  to  joke  about.  ❜  god,  she  was  going  to  have  a  conversation  with  her  mom  for  holding  back  such  information.  ❛  what  was  the  tiger’s  name  ?  ❜  sure,  she  wasn’t  a  little  kid  anymore  but  she  still  loved  animals.  ❛  you  better  tell  me  everything,  dixon.  ❜

SOPHIA PELETIER IS ALIVE. It’s not a thought he has very often, if at all. At one point, years ago, he’d clung to it — in the same way he’d clung to her dirtied doll, bleeding out & dying & praying that he’d done enough to find her. For a while after, he’d clung to it if only for Carol’s sake, because she didn’t want anyone to give up on her daughter, and Daryl hadn’t.

Of course, he’d had to give up hope. The world moves on, those lost are left behind, those lost are presumed dead. They never found her, but nobody could justify clinging onto that tiniest thread of hope. The odds were against her. The chances of her survival were just too low. And so they’d moved on with the world.

& now here she is.

Daryl isn’t sure what to say. He doesn’t even know what to think, or if he has any right to feel something at all. He’d never been very close to Sophia — his connection to her only grew after she went missing. She probably doesn’t remember him, and Daryl has forgotten most of what she looked like as a little girl. It’s … striking to see how similar she is to Carol, in small ways.

“I uh — I lost yer’ doll.”

        daryl  looked  different  than  she  remembered  ;  his  hair  longer,  eyes  filled  with  a  deep  exhaustion  that  never  went  away.  everyone’s  eyes  looked  that  way  now  a  days.  the  world  was  a  tough  one,  filled  with  survival,  loss,  &  tragedy.  but  despite  all  of  that,  it  was  also  layered  with  a  new  sense  of  hope.  after  all  of  this  time,  sophia  had  found  her  mother  &  the  rest  of  the  group.  it  had  to  mean  something.

❛  it’s  okay.  i  didn’t  expect  you  to  keep  it.  ❜  the  blonde  spoke  softly,  a  light  smile  playing  on  her  lips.  taking  a  few  steps  closer,  sophia  gave  him  a  quick  hug  &  peck  on  the  cheek.  ❛  thank  you,  for  everything  you’ve  done  for  my  mom.  i  know  you  were  just  doing  the  right  thing,  but  i  appreciate  it.  it  means  a  lot.  ❜  while  she  knew  just  how  strong  her  mother  was,  it  was  nice  to  know  that  she  had  been  looked  after  all  this  time.

the  past  years  the  thought  of  finding  her  mother  was  something  that  had  kept  her  going.  her  mom  was  a  warrior,  a  protector,  a  selfless  woman.  she  had  protected  sophia  from  her  father  countless  times  &  the  thought  of  that  reunion  drove  her  every  single  day.  ❛  i  guess  i  missed  a  lot,  huh  ?  ❜
