New Year over

It was a great time to spend with loved ones over this festive period. 2012 aims to be a BIG year in the evolution of NovaGlo. First we have 14 minutes, not yet promoted but all primed and ready to go. We will get another post up in a few days time outlining how, in 14 minutes, we can show the way forward. A way forward that, if you read the press and UK government says its going to be tough. Tough but not unachievable. Fact is, in uncertain times bold business decisions need to be made, and change is required. From the simple of simple to the more complex.. Hitting brick walls in musty rooms

Brainstorming, the congregation of people to think up original concepts. You get the idea, an outlook request requiring you to head off to the boardroom for a ‘session’ with colleagues and alike. The room’s cold, sitting toward the end of the table, a few Senior Managers and Executives who want to ‘be part of it’. Arrggghhhhhhhh

Brainstorming needs to be pleasurable, creating a moment that lacks the need for criticism and evaluation. Don’t hold brainstorming sessions in the same place you hold meetings, it the wrong setting and no matter how much ‘fun’ you try to inject into the session. It’s always seen as the feared, musty meeting room. The same meeting room in which you’re assessed on performance every quarter, typically not lovely environments as you debate how breathtaking you are. Point being, this is not the right environment to promote innovation from people, it’s uncomfortable.

Choose a different location, only the people who are involved need to come along. In large organization you’ll get the weight of Senior Managers and Execs who want to ‘join in’. If they have nothing to add, be bold say no People need to be in a position to not feel any pressure whatsoever. To get the best out of people it needs to be disconnected with the topic of work you do every day. Don’t talk about risk this will put a big brick wall up and limit their ideas. Encourage people to stand up and talk through idea, small or big. Get them to whiteboard, present and communicate.

Brainstorming needs to be a free, fun, and comfortable. Ideas will flow.

We focus on the WRONG STUFF

Everything we do is a procedure. Each process can be expressed by events that occur before, during and after completing. Think of a process, any process. What do they all have in common? Well they all  can be broken down into these sub-processes: define, locate, prepare, confirm, execute, monitor, modify and conclude. You’ve seen us go on about them in earlier posts.

So how does this create process re-thinking happen? Well to start with, far too many organisations focus on the wrong things. They focus too hard on re-inventing the products or services they’re all ready developing, rather than helping the end-user (customer/ client) to execute the steps better. 

We focus on the job in hand; this is the focal point of all value creation. It’s this way of approaching innovation that delivers real, sustainable opportunities. Value creation that sparks new ‘blue ocean’ opportunity to be different, standing out from everyone else.

While many companies looked to improve on standard mobile phone technology (enter stage left Nokia) Apple reconsidered the entire experience of using a mobile phone. The rest, as they say, is history.

James Ellington – internationally renowned GB sprinter – is seeking a sponsorship deal.    As the country’s only top sprinter without a sponsor, James has turned to eBay for vital funds, without which he risks being left behind his international competitors.   Four years of serious injury meant James – a 100m, 200m and relay sprinter – slipped down the rankings, and has been passed over by the major sponsors who were looking for long-term tie-ups. Now James is rounding off his best ever season, running 200m in the fastest time by a British athlete this year at a non-altitude venue (20.52 seconds) – without receiving a penny from a commercial business.

Rocking the boat......... ROCKS!!

Too many people are afraid to take the leap. All too frequently, we hear people talking about how they can change things to make work easier and more productive. The problem is no one takes the leap, we're not programmed this way, we need to be re-wired for the global age. Sadly many business models don't encourage thinking outside of the box. It's seen as disruption, it seen as rocking the boat. Companies need to develop thinking and create a suggestive environment from the top through to bottom in order to sustain long term. We need not to not fear the suggested, but fear the soft. R O C K I N G T H E B O A T R O C K S . . . . . . .

Google's not a real company

What happens when you create a business or redesign it from a rigid top down to an open,horizontal business model where everyone treats everyone else with respect? What happens when you trust, without question every single employee within your organisation? Seems a little mad and during the first phase of transition, a mild case of powerful exploratory chaos ensues. But predictability is the norm, going against what we know, and how we think clearly seems a step too far.

Then, over time the chaos dies away and self-organisation is born. When you give people the ability to think for themselves, allow them more space they do incredible things. From the outside, you're clearly going to get the skeptics who see it as a fad that will wither away. Sadly for these people they are wrong. It's time to change direction and all old viewpoint, discover and evolve.
