Been thinking about bbc merlin recently, and honestly i think its cringe to act like Arthur's relationship with gwen is a heteromative foil to merthur's true love.

Gwen is a black woman playing this iconic british folklore character, and she gets to be a kind and gentle person who is the object of desire for the male lead, and there's a hell of a lot less examples of that happening in media than two white gay men kissing.

Now I am talking from a point of western/british media and I know there are different nuanced depending on where you hail from in the world.

But in british media alone, i don't think viewing Gwen and Arthur's relationship as some regressive thing getting in the way of merthur being in love is the progressive take some people think it is.

I've been catching up on months worth of emmerdale and just got to the storyline of the dingle banding together to steal a bull from joe tate, and i loved it.

But this proved to me that my biggest problem with dingles in recent times other than there being egregious amounts of them is that they just haven't been dingle enough

They've consistently had this reputation as nuisances and criminals, that i feel like they hadn't been living up to for the past few years.

But the hillbilly-esque, living life by their own way, was what made them initially interesting.

All the families prior to them (at least to my memory) were village families who had drama behind closed doors but would try to conceal the drama to keep up with a facade.

But the dingles were public nuisances and bragging about it. That was their appeal.

And we need more of that.

Affair era robert was the biggest attention seeker when it came to Aaron

It's kind of funny to watch, the man is acting like a child, if he can't get the attention he wants from aaron he'll throw a metaphorical tantrum to get negative attention from him.

Theres the pre affair era where he's trying to offer aaron a pint, when aaron's clearly not interested, which ends in robert getting pushed against the wall by aaron and being threatened, and robert just smirks because he got exactly what he wanted.

Aaron's pulling away from him then he drops a casual 10k in investment for his new business to get back in Aaron's good books.

He invites aaron to a secret rendezvous, then when aaron completely ignores him, he goes out of his way to tell aaron that what they had wasn't real and that he only loves chrissie (completely blagging it because he absolutely wanted to keep seeing aaron) and when aaron wants to see him again on his wedding day, hes completely smug and satisfied because he got what he wanted.

Post Katie's death when aaron starts training to run a marathon, then chas suggests doing it for charity, Robert instantly offers to make a donation.

Aaron: "so you think you throwing your money around is going to change anything"

Robert: "well at least your not ignoring me now"

This all culminates in the scene in the 24 September 2015 episode. A controversial scene for the robron truthers. But for me this perfectly encapsulates what affair era Robert was trying to do with aaron. He seeks out aaron to let him know that he hasn't thrown aaron under the bus when he was getting interviewed by the police, possibly hoping for positive affirmation but is met with complete apathy Robert turns nasty, trying his best to get any reaction from aaron.

This all boils down to Aaron having a lot more power over Robert in the affair era than he realised. And thats completely by Robert's design, he wants so much from aaron but would never admit that to aaron, and Robert had to convince aaron that he was the one holding all the cards.
