PERIOD OF AMERICAN REGIME
Although Francisco Balagtas (1788–1862) was alive before the American era, his writings were highly regarded and read at this time. His epic poem "Florante at Laura" is still taught in schools today. He is regarded as one of the finest Filipino poets of all time. For his mastery of Tagalog poetry and his use of conventional Filipino poetic forms, Balagtas was well-known.
It seems appropriate to end Filipino American History Month with N.V.M Gonzalez, a significant figure in the Filipino literary world.
Gonzalez, who was born in the Philippine province of Oriental Mindoro in 1915, showed a passion for music from a young age. He developed his own hand-made guitars and studied violin playing. He enrolled in National University in Manila, Philippines, for college but did not complete his degree. He wrote for the Philippine Graphic when he was there, and he later edited for the Manila Chronicle and Evening News Magazine.
