Ragnar was on a hunting trip alone, deep in the wooded hills around his home. He had noone for company but his bow and his thoughts. He had had little luck on that day, and chose to make for the river, to drink his fill, fill his flask, and see what animals he could find at the water’s edge - it often drew the attention of deer.
He was suprirsed to see that it was not a deer that stood at the water’s edge, but a horse, and beside it a man, clad differently than anyone he had seen at Kattegat. He watched him for a moment before approaching him slowly, without any weapons drawn but with his hand resting visibly on the ax which swung from his belt
"What brings you to these parts, stranger?"
Ragnar’s voice was soft, almost difficult to hear over the laughter of the river.
Faramir turned his head slightly at the whisper of sound but did not turn fully until the sound of words came to his ears, thinking it to be an animal wanting to take fill of the water he stood by. But the sound of man had the second son fully aware. He stroked his horses long face for a short moment to assure the animal that all was well and then turned his body to the man that had approached him.
"I am a traveler," he answered. "Before you is merely a man looking and passing though."
He noted the weapon in the other's hand and as he took a step closer he ran his hand along his animal's back, and then let his hand fall to his side, just mere inches from where his own weapon was stored. He was not fearing threat or violence at the moment, but his training was hard to ignore, even so far from home.
"Is this river upon your land," he inquired. "If it is so, I meant no offense. Only to have my horse given her rest. We will take shelter beyond your lands if you would inform me of their end."

{ YES ALL OF THIS these are my thoughts exactly. my friends and boyfriend are dumb and say that lotr sucks and im just like no. you know nothing. nOTHING. these are the people i bestow my affections on jfc do you see what i have to deal with. sighs loudly for ten years. and yeah the platonic relationships in lotr are my favourite part because they’re all so different and perfect and heartbreaking like i cried so fucking much in the chapter where sam thought frodo was dead i dont think ive actually ever cried more while reading. i have such a weakness for well developed friendships and it’s a real shame there isn’t more of it in other media. the pyre scene and the whole battle fucked me up when i read it so much oh man. and well im pretty new to shipping in the lotr fandom because even though ive been a fan for ages i only just got actively in the fandom here. }
[ yeah some people are just insane. esp for not liking something so wonderful as lotr. my sis feels the same way. it is pretty common in media now for any friendship to turn into romance, which is annoying. yes, things are fun to ship, but things can also happily stay as just friends and still be so absolutley beautiful for it. and it's okay to be late on the shippin wagon cuz I was late to the fandom itself. I only watched the movies and started the books last year. so sometimes the late stuff happens yeah, but you can still have fun. and the fandom isn't about shipping, don't worry. it's just a fun thing to do. ]

[ painful love you do mean, correct? lol. pippin saw something in faramir and it made him believe in himself just enough to fight back, I think. not very much, but enough to keep him from just giving up all together. he'd only really had boromir all his life and then he was gone and faramir knew not what to do but pippin made him smile in those last few terrible days of the war. which he really really needed. the pyre scene allllways hurts. a ton. and people say that? how? have they actually seen lotr? there is tooooons of character development. esp with male/male friendships being the catalyst. which is different than most things as most chara stuff is focused on romantic relationships, but in lotr their love doesn't have to be romantic for it to be wonderful and exactly what they need. but yeah, I still ship despite that. I am human after all.

Faramir had spent the time of the games as he always did, away from all that he could, secluding himself and their demanding hands and mouths. But even locked away within his own home, drink turning his mind unfocused, he’d caught a glimpse of a holo vid and seen tearing flesh and blood… Enough to send him spiraling again, locking himself even further alone, hiding in his room like he’d done as a child when he’d seen his father in a rage. Whiskey had lulled him to sleep, the sound of silence far too loud for his overactive mind.
I went to the games to die, finding my own hand too shaky to do so without purpose behind it, but then realization made me falter. To die for them would be to let them win. To let their deaths hold no meaning. And I couldn't do that to my brother, to his memory.
"But we are living, Victor. And to kill ourselves now would be to spit upon the memory of those that we killed." And if it were so easy as what you plan, I would have done what you think of years ago.

Bio; District 2 born, a Career Tribute because it was all he could do. Denethor desired a son worthy, a son to win, and he pushed his sons to be beings of war from a young age. Boromir fell into the life easily, taking up a sword with no hesitation while Faramir held himself back, taking no joy in the weapons in his hands and therefore becoming a failure to his father. But when the games began, Boromir had been unprepared. He'd been a warrior of great skill, but had no known what innocent blood would do to him. All watched as Boromir fell, pierced by three arrows, and Denethor went mad with grief; pushing his now only child harder than before, striking out with words and weapon, forming him into a harsher warrior. And so it was of no surprise to any when Faramir volunteered that next year. They were silent and allowed him to call out his own name, none wanting to challenge the grieving brother. Faramir's choice of weapon became the bow, sharing with others the feeling of piercing death that had ended his brother. The games in Osgiliath were harsh but he was fierce and he was strong, and the Second Son came to be victor. He still knows not why he lived when Boromir fell.
