Tenchi Masaki is the main character of the series of Tenchi Muyo! He lives in a family shrine with his family, but he is actually an ordinary high school student, only he finds that he comes from the royal family of the planet Jurai and has extraordinary potential. He is gentle, patient and compassionate. Though he was of noble birth and possesses incredible abilities, he was humble. Trustworthy and reliable, going for others rather than self. Cool under pressure, but may be shy and embarrassed by romantic attention. Appreciates peace and attempts to settle disagreements without any need for unnecessary violence.
Kiyone Makibi is a police officer in the Tenchi Universe that shows up in several continuities of Tenchi Muyo! Especially Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, the movies, and several novels. She's the grounded counterpoint to her frequently volatile partner Mihoshi Kuramitsu. She is smart, well-trained and very capable. Being responsible and working hard and taking her duties seriously. Grown up and sensible, possibly the "voice of reason. Patient and persistent, but can also get frustrated when things don't go according to plan. A heart of caring under a professional front and fiercely loyal to those she can trust.
Depending of the particular Tenchi Muyo! continuity where they appear, their relationship is described in various ways and can be more or less romantic. When it comes to the franchise, they are not a natural pair in the majority of the versions, but I think that Tenchi and Kiyone would be a very strong couple, as their personalities naturally fit together. What makes the combination of these two work is that they're not necessarily based on dramatic romance; instead, they're more like friendship and mutual respect, emotional support and shared responsibility. Together, they are one of the more balanced and realistic duos.
Tenchi and Kiyone are an interesting combination because their abilities complement each other, and not in an artificial way. They're a great pair. Tenchi is calm, patient and kind, Kiyone is disciplined, responsible and practical. She has the structure, he the relaxation and he helps her keep her feet on the ground when she feels overwhelmed.
Kiyone also adds a sense of stability to the relationship. She's not like some of the more crazy house members, she's mature and reliable. She is just as responsible as Tenchi, and possesses a sense of burden to ease rather than to burden. Similarly, they also learn to respect each other. Kiyone tends to like Tenchi despite the fact that he is not bestowed with extraordinary powers or family. In turn, Tenchi values Kiyone's efforts, abilities, and determination.
Their personalities also indicate that they would be able to communicate well. Both tend to prefer to discuss issues rather than engage in dramatic confrontations. Instead of letting
misunderstandings become exacerbated, they would probably develop a relationship with them built on trust, patience, and cooperation.
A great and another pretty attractive thing regarding their relationship is their daily life. One can easily picture them to be having a quiet and home-like life. Kiyone would maintain order
and put up with the emotional stabilizations of Tenchi. They can form a good team to run a home or later to bear a family.
Together, they supplement each other in heartful ways. Kiyone sometimes feels stressed out due to her career and chaos surrounding her. Tenchi is a very calm and collected person that
makes others feel comfortable and accepted, which might just be what Kiyone needs. In turn, Kiyone provides competency, guidance, and decisiveness. She is disciplined, hardworking and used to taking responsivity even when things go wrong. With Tenchi, she would likely be the one to bring out the structure in the chaos, pushing him to do more when he feels he's getting lost or goes passive.
One of the things that is sometimes forgotten about Tenchi Masaki and Kiyone Makibi is that they are actually similar in many ways. They seem like two very different characters in some
ways—a shrine boy from a rural part of Earth and a galaxy police officer—but emotionally, their ways of dealing with life are very compatible. I would like to see them in a relationship because they are so distinct from each other yet have several important emotional aspects shared in common.
Tenchi's gift to a relationship is emotional stability. Despite his abundance of alien life and supernatural circumstances, his character is basic, good, and non-controlling. He does not
try to control people and he accepts them as they are. That sense of calm acceptance can be hard to come by — and precious — for a person like Kiyone who often encounters stress,
responsibility and frustration in her work. He also has a sincerity. He is not into playing emotional games or being relationship a power struggle. Instead, he can provide an environment in which someone like Kiyone can let down their defenses.
Kiyone possesses attributes, on the other hand, that balance Tenchi's character. Disciplined, hard-working and accustomed to taking responsibility under difficult circumstances. She is
also smarter and more assertive than the characters Tenchi surrounds himself with, so she might inspire him to be more independent and decisive in his actions instead of letting the
circumstances dictate his responses.
There is a balance between them in their emotional state. Tenchi is a place of acceptance, of emotional softness, and Kiyone is a place of drive and realism. But there's a possible tension point too. Kiyone can be self critical and stressed, and Tenchi, reluctant to confront. Without good communication, she may feel she's working too hard and he may feel he's under too much pressure. But if they are successful in the relationship, the dynamic is complementary. Kiyone grows more assertive and down-to-earth thanks to Tenchi's example, while Tenchi's example causes Kiyone to stop living through her emotions and realize that she has value beyond her work.

In a long-term relationship, there would have to be compromises on the part of where and how to live. But I think both of them are inquisitive and considerate, so I think they would be able to work through those differences. A lot more to the pair when you're thinking about their personalities and how they'll each
"stress test" each other over time.
Tenchi's most powerful attribute is not a dominant personality or a leader, but the ability to remain consistent in your emotions during chaos. He learns to be very patient and tolerant, having lived with incredibly volatile and extreme individuals and environments. But, in a relationship, this indicates that he's not likely to escalate a conflict. If Kiyone gets stressed, frustrated or even angry, Tenchi will likely just maintain his composure, and not necessarily argue or withdraw from the situation. Instead he would remain emotionally in the moment. That calm and emotional area would be very calming for someone like Kiyone who is always busy with high-pressure Galaxy Police duties and rarely finds such moments in her life.
Tenchi is not without weaknesses, however. He tends not to confront things and has difficulty making decisions. Instead of deciding something that could upset someone he often attempts to keep everyone pleased. In a romantic relationship, this may cause some issues that are second hand and not addressed right away.
Kiyone brings a different perspective to relationships. She is structured, decisive and responsible. She wants to define situations, find the problem, figure out the solution, and
decide on the next step. It might be a stabilizing factor for Tenchi, who is sometimes diffused between commitments and doesn't necessarily put himself first.
But there are emotional pressure points for Kiyone as well. When something does not go her way, she tends to suffer in silence, work more, and set unrealistic demands for herself. When it comes to a presentation to Tenchi, this may cause her to attempt to handle the physical side of things as well as the emotional side of the relationship, rather than just feeling it.

The regulation of emotions also differs interestingly. Tenchi controls with acceptance. He imbibes chaos and calms himself within. Kiyone controls and structures. She tries to bring
stability outside of her world. Due to this variation, they might have an initial misunderstanding about each other. Kiyone's intensity may seem like unnecessary stress to Tenchi, or Tenchi's calmness may seem like passivity or indecisiveness to Kiyone. These differences can, as they mature together, however, become complementary rather than opposite.
The best possible danger that may occur in their romance is unequal emotional work. When Kiyone always takes it upon himself to steer the direction of the relationship, he may start to feel as if he's running both the show and his own life. Similarly, when Tenchi becomes too passive, he may end up being swept along instead of being involved. Healthiest form of this relationship would thus be the growth of both the individuals. Kiyone would discover how to stop being so responsible and just exist without all the burdens. Tenchi himself would learn how to take initiative and act on emotions rather than being continually neutral.
Overall, this results in an attitude based on calm, disciplined hustle. It's not flashy compatibility, it's a partnership with stability and growth, as each person slowly helps the other become a better person.
Furthermore, Tenchi would most likely be warm and respectful to Kiyone, but in a steady manner. He is well-mannered, humble and sensitive, and would likely emphasize making her feel safe and valued. He would appreciate her skills and commitment, and would notice when she is working too hard.Tenchi would probably show her love by minor, unshowy acts: helping her get a good night's' sleep on tough days, listening to her grievances with patience, and giving her a sense of "home," which is uncommon in the Galaxy Police.
Kiyone, however, would simply take care of him with a mix of love and mild frustration. As she is very professional, she can be sharp and very often stressed and may have a difficult time seeing his gentle and unassuming nature at first. It's the contrast that would interest her, ironically. Tenchi is salvation from emotion and kindness in a life of pressure and responsibility. In turn, Kiyone would take to protecting him in her own special way. Although she may seem blunt at times and sometimes bossy, she would be a loyal person. She would show her love by doing things for him, checking on him, making sure he wasn't getting
himself into trouble unnecessarily, and letting herself relax when she is with him.
Thus, they complement each other both physically and mentally, and their relationship turns into a relaxed helper to a stressed protector. Tenchi helps Kiyone calm down, emotionally refresh herself, and understand that she is not the only one bearing her burden. Kiyone advises Tenchi to stand up for himself more, be more decisive and confident in life's uncertainties. Some friction would probably be inevitable due to Kiyone's hard work and Tenchi's getting in trouble; but the conflicts would only increase their understanding and not necessarily split them apart forever.
That's why I like the concept of Tenchi and Kiyone together. They're not like two individuals going into a frequent drama, but like two who would become best friends, trust each other, and one day be the one that everyone most wanted to come home to. Their relationship won't be based on the dramatic romance or anything but rather on respect, emotional support, and a shared responsibility for one another, and on consistent personal growth.
That's why I feel that Tenchi Masaki and Kiyone Makibi are one of the most balanced, realistic, and emotion-filled combination of the Tenchi Muyo! franchise.
