NTR of September is...

Nemty!

Who is Nemty? He is a ferryman that features most prominently in the Contendings between Horus and Set. Poor Nemty gets screwed over multiple times in multiple myths as he is forced to ferry unscrupulous people across various rivers! He is often shown as being a hawk on a crescent shaped boat.

Nemty is often associated with the east bank of the Nile, or with the east in general and sports the epithet "Lord of the East". He is also adverse to gold and seems to prefer silver - likely due to the unscrupulous people mentioned above. You can read more about him here.

While not much is known about this deity, we do hope that you'll find a way to reach out to him, surprise him or honor him during the month of September!

Meskhenet — Goddess presiding at childbirth. In her form of a tile terminating in a female head (called in the Book of the Dead ‘cubit-with-head’) she represents one of the bricks upon which women in Ancient Egypt took a squatting position to give birth. Her presence near the scales in the Hall of the Two Truths, where the dead person’s heart is examined and weighed to ascertain suitability for the Egyptian Paradise, is there to assist at a symbolic rebirth in the Afterlife. Her symbol of two loops at the top of a vertical stroke has been shown to be the bicornuate uterus of a heifer. In addition to ensuring the safe delivery of a child from the womb, Meskhenet takes a decision on its destiny at the time of birth. In the Papyrus Westcar the goddess helps at the birth of the future first three kings of Dynasty V. On the arrival of Userkaf, Sahura and Neferirkara into the arms of ISIS, she approaches each child and assures it of kingship. Similarly she is the force of destiny that assigns to a scribe promotion among the administrators of Egypt. A hymn in the temple of Esna refers to four ‘Meskhenets’at the side of the creator-god KHNUM, whose purpose is to repel evil by their incantations.

August's NRT of the Month: Meskhenet

Meskhenet is depicted anthropomorphically, with the sign of a stylized bovine uterus above her head, or as the personification of the brick on which Egyptian women traditionally squatted to give birth, in which case the brick itself is depicted with a woman’s head. Meskhenet is associated with the destiny bestowed upon an individual at birth, as is vividly demonstrated in a tale from the Westcar Papyrus. (x)

Not a whole lot is known about this NTR and we look forward to everyone learning more about this goddess during the month of August!

NTR of the Month for August is Meskhenet Due to Wep Ronpet taking over the beginning of August, I’ve been unable to dedicate any real time to learning about Meskhenet, but a moment of down time gave me a chance to draw this. Once WR is over there will be more time to get to know her better and to make a few longer posts for her.

Votive stela of Nefer-Menu [hymn-prayer to Ra]

My soul bows before Ra in adoration, When He appears on the East of the Sky. My soul will follow You, After the Morning Barque and Evening Barque. It will follow You with praises For death of Atum and rebirth of Khepri. I will touch the Wedjat-eyes with my hand, To announce Ma’at by all my life, Always glorifying the greatness Of You, Ma’at, and the Light of your Evening Ship, That performs its daily course in the Sky. 18.05.2000 ++ I translated this poem into english for #ntr of the month. =) It’s based on votive stela of Nefer-Menu in Pushkin museum of fine Arts in Moscow. Russian original: Nefer-Menu Моя душа склоняется пред Ра, Являющимся на Востоке Неба. Моя душа проследует с тобой, За утренней ладьею и вечерней; Тебе она последует хвалою - Атума смерти, рождеству Хепри. Руками я коснусь очей Уаджет, Чтоб Истину собою возвещать, Всегда ее величье прославляя, - Тебя, Маат, и свет Вечерней Барки, Что в небе путь свершает каждодневный. 18.05.2000

Kemetic Problem #31: Worshiping Ra but being very photosensitive to sunlight.

I’ve been wanting to make prayer beads specifically for Ra and I figured there was no better time than now to make them.

The gold disk is a clip-on earring I bought at a thrift store: it was clearly hand made because there are fingerprints in the clay. The same goes for the black beads, which were part of a set of prayer beads I used from elementary school until college when tragedy struck and the cord snapped. The bead with Ra’s name in hieroglyphs was wood-burned freehand by yours-truly, with each glyph roughly the size of my pinky-nail. The sun-disk bead is literally just a black bead with super glittery gold nail polish on it. The rest of the beads were given to me and my wife by a good friend.

I like to organize the beads into sets of 12, 10 for the hours of daylight and 2 extra for dawn and dusk, the rest is just me following my instinct and taking orders from the big man.

*really really nervous fidgeting * so….sorry for the crappy drawing! I just saw a reminder post about netjeru of the month, and felt inspired to participate. However, knowing me if I didn’t do anything now, I probably wouldn’t have the time to later. So, you get a quick couple minute sketch of Ra, right before I head to bed for the night.

My new altar set up for NTR of the month as well as Nebt-het. When I have an altar I always have a set up for Ra, so for now I have my generic altar set up with my area for Ra in the top left and area for Nebt-het in the top right (I’m only just starting to work with her so I’m keeping her area small.) Under my altar I have my stones, pendulum, a necklace, and then some fragile items I want on my altar that I don’t want my cats breaking, including a black sand and water “hourglass” (it’s more of a “5 minute glass,”) and some animal bones.
