After a very close battle Shotaro Hidari has taken 1st Place!
Our 2nd Place: Kim Soleum put up a beautiful fight against him and our 3rd Place: Baek Saheon put up a great fight as well!
I'm noticing a pattern among the winners
Now that the beta tournament is over, nominations for the Alpha Poll close at the end of the month, so don't forget to submit people if you haven't already!

Tries to be hard-boiled, ends up half-boiled. He’s going to protect the city with his partner Phillip! Tries to be cool and suave but he’s really silly and goofy but he has a big heart as well!
Kim Soleum
hes such an in between of alpha and omega that there is no other way to classify that man. hes just a Beta.
since hes from another world that presumably is close to ours he wouldn't be omega or alpha when he ended up there, making him a beta
I know it's less than 7 hours left to be posting propaganda but i'm throwing my hat in anyways
I think @apho-sappho said it best: Shotaro is a beta who's pretending to be an alpha. He lived his entire life admiring the stoic, hard-boiled detective archetype. His mentor/former boss was the embodiment of that to the most extreme degree, and he admired him since he was a kid. He literally modelled his entire style/hobbies around it, and as much as he tries to come off as hardboiled he's such a nerd he can't commit to it completely. It's something both his allies and enemies alike calls him out for. Best case, it's to tease him whenever he gets too pretentious dealing with a case. Worst case, it's to either label him a fraud and/or demonize him as a horrible match to his partner (said partnership being the literal source of their power).
And yet, he stays true to himself! He says corny-ass one-liners! He'd push himself to near-death just to land one more hit! He'd post up and meow to look for missing cats! He'd fumble a lead because he has such a deep belief in the people he's helping it blinds him to their true intentions, and yet it's that same conviction he holds in people that clinches the win for him and his partner. He's strong, but not stoic. He's kind, but not spineless. He loves his city and won't stand for anyone that makes it cry (direct quote). It's his passion in both combat and people that's the source of his strength.
All I'm saying is that if Soleum is a beta for the absence of both alpha and omega characteristics, then Shotaro is a beta for possessing both alpha and omega characteristics without completely leaning into either, because as much as he tries, only being one without the other isn't what makes him him.

If GSGW was canonically ABO-verse, Kim Soleum would be a beta. He is around Alpha-coded characters all the time and he's completely oblivious to the feelings they have towards him. (Or at the very least, he misinterprets the reasons that they feel that way. If anything, he's more likely to just be intimidated by/scared of them, because some of them are literally monsters.)
This is not a man who is affected by, or can even sense, pheromones. He's too busy trying to get home to be intentionally forming lasting connections (even though he does) in this scary place! He's emotionally unavailable and not ready to mingle. He's the definition of the "get the job done and go home" mentality.
Also, in a lot of Korean webnovel/manwha the protagonist will have younger human children that they look after/mentor or creatures that act as pseudo-children for them to help raise/care for. Not Soleum! Other beings here are trying to adopt him, not the other way around!

Guys we can't be losing this, our nonchalant man who goes thorough several relationships before he knows he's in them. Kim Soleum fits beta so perfectly.
He's SO oblivious to the affection around him, practically getting love confessions in canon and is still like 'why are they doing this?' Somehow all his emotional intelligence evaporates when it comes to people valuing him. Saves a guy's life multiple times: 'why is he helping me, does he want my items?' And that is nearly a quote.
And for actual romance, the only thing we know about his love life back in his own world is that he turned down a date with a girl he liked because he was too scared to watch a horror movie. This is a man who routinely risks his life in ghost stories to save other people while crying in his head that the ghost is too scary.
He's so competent and acts like nothing phases him in ghost stories, with his roommate, he acts like a psychopath to scare him, and through various points of the story, he acts meekly to avoid suspicion. He takes on roles as he needs to to survive, his real personality is more middle ground. That is beta ass behavior!
I still personally love the idea that he's none of the abo designations and is the secret fourth thing: creature from another universe(canon). Which would effectively render him a beta; absolutely no smell, not at all comprehending the social rules of an abo society, deflecting all advances in favor of speed running his 9-5. He'd be more of a beta than any beta in an abo world because of his unfamiliarity with it!

You know, when I submitted Shotaro for this, I wasn’t expecting him to make it to the finals. Maybe a passing thought of “wouldn’t it be funny if he made it to the finals and won the whole thing.” But now that’s reality and I believe in him! GO SHOTARO!

Basically, he was cowed into a beta-like position, as the protagonist's subordinate, since almost the beginning of the book.
Please vote for Ken, Kim Soleum, Ryland Grace and Baek Saheon! It'd be so funny if the semi-finals on both sides of the bracket were just: character from GSGW vs character played by Ryan Gosling lol
