Awkward Hargreeves Moments #001
Whaddup! Happy Munday!
Klaus looked over at Ben, and smiled a little before nodding. “Yeah. That’s why I was so… weird after that mission. Everyone kept saying he was gone, but I could still see him. It was weird.” He said. “The funeral was weird.”
Vanya pulled a face, a mix of hesitation and concern as her eyes stayed locked on where Ben supposedly was. She remembered the days, weeks, months after Ben had passed, how strange it had been for all of them. But she got the feeling that it was much stranger for Klaus, especially if he could see him after it all.
Her features softened in her pause, a deep breath rising and falling. Klaus had been there for her on her darkest day, and the least she could do was give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Can he hear me? And see me and...”
A slight smile then, directed more towards Ben than anyone. Looking back at Klaus, she let herself smile more, before letting it fall once more.
“I’m sorry for never... being there for you.”
Normally, he would have.
Under normal circumstances, he might have sat down and tried to talk to Vanya instead, he might have tried to make her understand that he was on her side, if there even really were any sides there. He might have tried to smooth things over, he might have tried to understand what had happened why she’d done what she’d done.
But these were not normal circumstances.
The whole building was collapsing around them, and he knew that Diego had barely made it out - Luther was probably fine, but he didn’t even know what state his other siblings were in. He hoped they were okay. But Vanya wouldn’t be if she didn’t get out now, and neither would he. So instead of listening to her, he proceeded to try to lift her up, hoping to at least get her to her feet - she could handle the rest, hopefully, because he wasn’t sure how far he’d make it if he had to carry her out.
“I’m sorry, but we need to go, Vanya!” His tone was pleading, eyes darting wildly around as he tried to spot any debris that might be hurtling towards them. “Come on, the whole building is coming down! We’ve gotta get out! Please!”
He was not ready to lose another sibling.
Vanya was more than willing to stay, to let her home crumble around her and take her into nothingness. The sheer idea of nothing felt like bliss at that moment, when everything else was so painful and loud. But Klaus screaming for her to move, begging with her to go, caused a surge within her that hadn’t been expected. Truly, she had anticipated her siblings leaving her, the monster who tried to kill their sister and crushed their childhood home.
Eyes flickered to look at him, heavy eyelids as she tried so hard to focus. How scared he looked, how broken. She had caused this. She was the villain of their story now.
And yet, she spluttered out a weak reply, voice hoarse against the raging crashes around them.
“I can’t.”
If she could, Vanya probably would have let a tear fall, but it felt like all of her cries had been used. She couldn’t. Emotionally, she felt like she belonged here, left to rot with the rubble. But she was trapped physically too, her small frame too weak to stand. She would have stood in that moment if she could, for Klaus. For Klaus and nobody else.
“I can’t.”
Nancy hated to admit it, but when Five had first disappeared? For the first few days, she’d assumed he’d LEFT of his own volition. Just walked out on the Academy, too furious with their father for refusing to push his training any further to even finish his meal or pack a bag. Five wasa bit of a hot head, it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility for him to pitch a fit like that and storm out to prove a point. But the longer he was gone? The more Nancy’s thoughts began to turn toDOUBTS, and troubling questions swum to the surface. No matter how angry he was with their father, he would’ve made contact with his siblings again. Vanya especially. Even if only to ask for them to send him some of his things, to promise them he was okay … if Five COULD? He would’ve tried to contact them.
Which meant that whatever had happened to him? Prevented him from doing so. Maybe he was lost, injured, captive, or WORSE - but it was definitely something where he was prevented from reaching out to his brothers and sisters. The thought made Nancy’s stomach turn, and she lowered her eyes to Vanya’s carpet before actual tears could form. “No … no, if Mom had said something to Dad? You’d already BE in trouble.” Nancy agreed, shaking her head no. Pulling her knees up a little closer to her chest, she sighed. “Five is … Five is HARD to talk about, V.” Nancy frowned, not meeting her sister’s eyes. “For all of us. Not because we don’t miss him, or worry about him. Because we don’t have the WORDS to talk about it. I mean come on, Luther and Diego have the emotional maturity of toddlers. This kind of … of grief is too much for most of them. Of US.”
Five was hard to talk about, Vanya knew that. She could feel the tension whenever his name was mentioned, feel his absence when they were all together as a family, the seat at the dinner table longing for his company. Vanya knew that it was hard to talk about because she could feel the weight in her chest whenever she even began to think about it, yet the idea of him being forgotten filled her with more dread than she could fathom. He was their brother. He deserved to be spoken about.
“I’m sorry.”
Abandoning her violin, Vanya went to sit beside her sister on the bed, gaze averted downwards to avoid her glance. It was sometimes hard to remember that the others missed him too, that they were just as scared and shocked as she was.
“Do you maybe want to come with me tonight?”
It was a long shot, she knew that, but letting somebody else in on her new nightly tradition felt warming. Less lonely.
“You don’t have to. You’d get in trouble if Dad found out.”
“But I know you miss him too.”
Really, Five’s attempts were going to be met with resistance, he knew that going into this. But, he also knew that things were going to have to be drastically different from before to prevent any further reckoning upon their world. He not only felt it was impunitive, but that it was neccessary, despite all criticisms he’d probably receive from both their siblings and their father.
“We can get some sound. Maybe a…metronome of sorts? It’s constant, and consistent. And perhaps not as harsh as other noises. Your violin for example. It seems to have exhibited quite a large frequency, and I’m just gonna take a leap here and say that your ability probably hones in on that.”
Five wanted to assure her that he would be by her side the whole time, and that if anything went wrong, he’d be able to teleport them out of there, but she seemed even more averse to the idea as he figured she would be. “Is there another seemingly empty vacuum of space you think would be better?”
“You’re a brat, you know that?”
His sarcasm wasn’t met well with Vanya, who was already feeling nauseated at the thought of setting foot in that cell again. She’d been locked in there too many times for her liking, ignored and neglected by the people who were supposed to care about her most. She wondered if Five really couldn’t tell how distraught the thought of such an ordeal was making her, or if he just cared more about training her powers. She supposed she understood the latter to a degree.
Fingernails digging into the skin of her knees, Vanya pushed out the words that she didn’t want to say.
“I guess not.”
Hesitation. A slight quiver of the voice as she tried to put on a brave face. She’d grown a lot since her childhood, back when she used to cry at the smallest of things, but Vanya still felt as small as she did back then.
“What are we waiting for then?”
“Some days are just worse than others,” Maya added a small chuckle as she helped the other climb the few stairs up to her door.
“Hey, at least I don’t live on the 10th floor or something! You always gotta see the good in things.” That was what she also always tried to do. Sure, it got hard sometimes but there wasn’t much she could do, was there?
As soon as they reached the door, Maya pulled her keys out of her pocket and pushed the door open. “Don’t be surprised I have two dogs and a cat.” Just now she realized that maybe she should have mentioned that earlier. It was too late now after all and her three-legged pit bull was already jumping towards them. “Lola, go lay down! I don’t have time right now!”
Maya brought the wounded woman over to her couch and helped her lay down. Carefully she looked at the bloody wound, smiling. “Hey, it doesn’t even look that bad!” Sure, Maya knew that it would be way worse if it wasn’t for her, but the other didn’t have to know that, right?
Usually Vanya wouldn’t have minded being jumped at by a dog, but the pit bull made her jump, a searing pain running through her body. She bit her lip to avoid crying out, but the instant relief that fell over her frame when she laid down put all thoughts of pets out of her mind. She glanced down as the other commented on the wound, seeing for herself that it really wasn’t as bad as it felt. Vanya had been expected a great gash across her waist, instead seeing a glorified scratch.
“Is that it?”
If she wasn’t so surprised, she would have laughed. It would still need medical attention, to be cleaned and potentially stitched, but she’d seen worse cuts come from training as a kid.
“I’m... I’m Vanya, by the way.”
It was a loaded statement. Diego had only JUST started realizing what Dad could and couldn’t make him do. Considering uprooting his whole life, going against everything Dad had ever wanted for him, LEAVING… he knew he had to do it, but it didn’t make it EASY…
“Dad has ways to make me do a lot of things I don’t want to do,” he just said quietly, and was glad when Vanya started talking about her own plans. It was a welcome distraction, and a surprise.
“Wow, that’s… that’s great!” College, wow! Diego would never even get his GED, he was sure. He’d never been very smart, and had always prioritized hsi training over his studies. But Vanya going to college, it just made sense. “You’ve gotta go! What would you study?”
Vanya hadn’t expected the positivity that Diego sent her, the uproar of seeming excitement at the prospect of her going to college. It was a dream that she’d been perusing, not thinking that she would actually go, but the look in his eyes sent a shot through her veins. It was almost like pride, something that she very rarely received.
“Music, probably. Maybe something else with it, like English Literature.”
A sheepish grin curved onto her lips as she ducked her head. Fidgeting with her hands, Vanya let herself shrug, remembering the odds of her getting in.
“I don’t know though. I probably wouldn’t get in.”
Diego cursed at himself under his breath. He never knew when to stop and he was certain that it was too late to learn now. Her soft voice just got a little nod out of him and short raise of his eyebrows.
While he didn’t think the drink was tasty, he didn’t want it to go to waste either and so decided to just take another sip which ended in him pulling a face at the glass yet again.
Diego was just about to open his mouth and say something when he was interrupted rather rudely by Vanya.
“I’m sorry can you blame me for not being exactly interested in the past years? You didn’t giveany of us much of a reason. I’m just trying to do some sibling bonding or whatever you wanna call it now that we are here.” An annoyed roll of his eye followed his words as he leaned back in his seat.
Wincing a little at his accusation, Vanya knew that it was true. No amount of alcohol could cloud her vision clearly enough to deny it. She hadn’t done a lot with her life in past years besides the orchestra and her book, rarely sending emails to her siblings except on birthdays and holidays and special occasions. Maybe it was her fault that they were all so distant, so disconnected.
“Alright. I’m sorry.”
Taking another gulp of her drink, she averted her eyes for a moment, letting out a huffed chuckle under her breath before locking her gaze back on Diego’s.
“I haven’t been doing anything. Nothing. Nothing besides my violin and my book.”
A pause.
“I wanted so badly to be extraordinary like the rest of you. But look at me, Diego.”
“I feel like I’ve gotten lower since the Academy, and I didn’t think that was possible.”
