As the summer fades into fall, we're reminded to begin the process of slowing down. Far too often in American culture we glorify busy, we exalt those whose wheels constantly spin...the "doers" of our society. As the leader of a nonprofit organization who is seen as one of those "doers", I understand the tendency that people have to project this as an admirable quality. After all, money isn't raised by those sitting around twiddling their thumbs, is it? Doers DO get stuff DONE. But what I fear people don't recognize is that for every hectic busy hour of returning phone call after text message after email, I take three hours to calm, center, withdraw, and engage in the many aspects of my personal spiritual practice that allow me to have not only the energy but the wisdom and attitude to handle the myriad personalities, issues, and responsibilities that come with the title. We've all got a title of some kind that we feel we need to live up to...mother, father, partner, child, grandparent, sister, brother, employee, colleague, friend, resting bitchface champion, aspiring beam of pure light...you've got at least one and most of us have many. Never forget that before you are any of those titles, you are a soul in a meat suit that needs proper nourishment to survive and thrive during your earth plane experience. So whether you partake in a pants-less kitchen dance party, meditate, walk your dogs in the park, practice yoga and tai chi, garden, read, sing the cheesiest 80s ballad you can find on the radio at the top of your lungs with the windows down entertaining everyone in traffic or any other activity that brings you joy and restores your spirit, be the DOER of THAT. Create space and make time for BEING nowhere and finding the joy there. Slow down in September, friends. Surprise yourself with what you find on the road less traveled. #selfcare #slowdown #stoptheglorificationofbusy #doers
